It is free, open source, and designed for live streaming and recording, with scenes that can combine sources such as a display, window, game, images, text, audio, and an optional webcam. For most Linux users, install OBS through the route recommended for their distribution, build and test a complete scene, then use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard to help choose settings for their computer and workload.
Which Linux streaming software should you use?
For live broadcasting with control over scenes, sources, and audio, start with OBS Studio. The OBS Project provides Linux installation guidance and describes OBS as free, open-source software for recording and live streaming. Its Linux requirements list an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. Meeting those minimum requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can stream smoothly: encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect the workload.
The available evidence establishes OBS as a Linux-capable live-streaming application. It does not establish a complete, current roster of other native Linux applications that fill the same role, so the alternatives below are deliberately limited to what their official materials support.
Install OBS on Linux
Choose an installation route
- Ubuntu: OBS’s Linux installation page documents an OBS PPA route. Check that page for current commands and supported Ubuntu releases before installing, since its installation instructions are dated 2021 and may change.
- Other distributions: OBS recommends Flathub. The project wiki identifies Flatpak and Ubuntu as supported Linux builds; packages for other distributions are community-provided. If you choose a distribution package instead, consult that distribution’s package documentation for its maintenance and update details.
Check display and graphics compatibility
Before building a scene, check that your graphics hardware supports OpenGL 3.3 and that your Linux desktop is running X or Wayland. These are the Linux/Unix requirements listed by OBS. They are a baseline, not a promise of adequate streaming performance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up an OBS stream, from scene to test
- Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use the wizard to estimate suitable settings for your computer and intended use. Treat its result as a starting point: OBS notes that actual capacity depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. A scene is the arrangement of the visual and audio sources you want viewers to receive. Add only the sources needed for this broadcast; a webcam is optional, not a requirement for streaming a screen or game.
- Add and arrange sources. OBS supports sources including webcams, capture cards, windows, images, text, and browser windows. Select the source that matches your content, arrange the visual layout, and confirm that the intended content is visible in the preview.
- Check the audio path. Review the OBS audio mixer and confirm that the relevant source registers when you speak or play audio. OBS describes per-source filters in its product information; use them only when needed and verify the result in a test recording or private test broadcast.
- Connect the broadcast destination. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream, select the service you intend to use, and enter the stream key supplied by that service. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture or share it publicly. Labels or destination options can differ by service and OBS release.
- Test before going live. Check the scene, audio, and connection using the destination’s available test or private-stream option. Watch for dropped frames, missing sources, silent audio, or a computer that cannot keep up. Reduce scene complexity or revisit the wizard’s suggested workload settings if performance is poor.
Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframes
There is no universally correct bitrate or resolution for every Linux computer or streaming destination. OBS’s requirements guidance specifically cautions that performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard rather than treating one set of numbers as suitable for every machine. Then check the current guidance from the service you are streaming to before choosing output values; its ingest requirements are not established by the Linux guidance summarized here.
In OBS, the relevant output and video controls are under Settings, including Output and Video. The precise controls visible can depend on the selected output mode, encoder, service, and software version. If the destination specifies a keyframe interval or bitrate ceiling, follow that destination’s current requirement rather than guessing. Re-test after changing a setting, because increasing resolution or frame rate raises the work your encoder and system must handle.

Linux alternatives: what the available evidence supports
| Software | What is established | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Free, open-source recording and live-streaming software with Linux installation guidance and supported Flatpak and Ubuntu builds. | Live broadcasts where you need scenes, multiple source types, and audio controls. | Real performance depends on the workload and computer; basic requirements alone do not guarantee smooth streaming. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | The official quick-start guide surfaced for this comparison lists Windows 11 and macOS 12 or later. | Not established here as a native Linux alternative. | The guide lists Windows and macOS, not Linux. That does not establish that every workaround or compatibility layer is impossible. |
| Kdenlive | The official download page provides Linux AppImage and Flatpak downloads. | Linux video editing and post-production. | Its download page does not establish Kdenlive as a live-streaming application, so Linux availability alone does not make it an OBS substitute. |
If your main need is editing recordings before publication, Kdenlive may be relevant as an adjacent editing tool. If you need to send a live broadcast from Linux, OBS is the only application in this comparison established as both Linux-capable and intended for live streaming.
Common setup problems and what to check
- OBS will not start or the display is unavailable: check the listed OpenGL 3.3 GPU requirement and whether your desktop session uses X or Wayland. Also confirm the installation package is appropriate for your distribution.
- The preview is smooth, but the broadcast struggles: the workload may exceed what the computer can encode. Revisit the Auto-Configuration Wizard and reduce demands such as resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity as needed.
- A source is missing or appears in the wrong place: inspect the active scene and its sources, then confirm the selected window, capture device, image, or other source is the intended one.
- Viewers cannot hear the expected audio: check the relevant source and the OBS audio mixer before broadcasting; make a test recording or test stream to confirm the complete audio path.
- A community package is outdated or behaves differently: check the distribution’s package documentation and maintenance status. The OBS project identifies other distribution packages as community-provided, unlike its supported Flatpak and Ubuntu build routes.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, that is a different job from broadcasting a live desktop scene in OBS. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
