For most backpackers, a 10,000 mAh power bank is the practical balance between carried weight and reserve capacity. Choose a 5,000 mAh bank for a short trip when a limited phone top-off is enough; step up to 20,000 mAh or more only when you can name the extra devices or higher-draw charging needs that justify the weight. A bank’s advertised mAh rating describes its cells, not the amount of energy delivered at USB output.
Which capacity makes sense for your trip?
Start with the devices you will actually charge, how often you will use them, and how long you will be away from an outlet. A phone used for navigation, photos, and emergency communication may need more reserve than a phone that stays mostly off. Add a camera, tablet, GPS unit, or laptop only if you expect to charge it from the bank.
5,000 mAh: minimum weight for short trips
CleverHiker’s 2026 comparison lists the Nitecore NB Air at 5,000 mAh and 3.1 oz, with a listed price of $40 at the time of that comparison. CleverHiker describes it as a short-trip option for quick phone top-offs. In its testing, the NB Air delivered roughly 16 Wh of usable capacity and provided about two partial iPhone 15 Pro charges—approximately one full charge in CleverHiker’s account. Actual results vary with the phone, its battery condition, charging losses, and how it is used.

A 10,000 mAh bank is a sensible starting point for general ultralight backpacking: it provides more reserve than a 5,000 mAh model without the bulk of a high-capacity bank. CleverHiker’s 2026 comparison selects the Nitecore NB10000 Gen4 as its overall choice, listing it at 5.2 oz and $84. CleverHiker measured a 3-hour-2-minute recharge in its test setup and cites low weight, compactness, efficiency, and rapid recharge among its advantages, while noting a premium price and reduced cold-weather efficiency. Those are that publisher’s comparison and test results, not a guarantee for every user.

Keep generations distinct when comparing specifications. Nitecore’s current NB10000 Gen3 product page specifies a weight of 150 g ±5 g (about 5.3 oz), while CleverHiker lists the Gen4 at 5.2 oz. The Gen3 specifications below do not establish the Gen4’s port limits or ingress rating.
20,000 mAh and up: for a named extra need
More capacity earns its place when you regularly charge several devices or a higher-draw device. CleverHiker lists the UGREEN 145W at 25,000 mAh and 1 lb 1.8 oz, or more than a pound. It found the bank useful for larger electronics but excessive for an average backpacker. Its reported eight-foot drop test temporarily interrupted operation; normal operation returned after the next charge. That is one publisher’s test, not a durability guarantee.
Anker’s 2026 manufacturer-authored guide positions its 27,650 mAh Prime bank for users carrying devices such as a camera, drone, GPS, or laptop, and puts its weight at around 600 g. Treat that as manufacturer guidance rather than independent comparative testing. A large bank is most defensible when the devices and charging schedule make the extra capacity necessary.

The figures below come from different sources and describe different products. CleverHiker’s prices are comparison-page listings and can change; its test times and findings are publisher results, not manufacturer specifications.

What the mAh number does—and does not—tell you
Milliamps-hours alone do not make two banks directly comparable unless voltage is also considered. Nitecore specifies the NB10000 Gen3’s cell capacity as 10,000 mAh at 3.85 V, or 38.5 Wh. Its product page separately lists rated energy of 6,200 mAh at 5 V, typical 2 A. Nitecore’s hosted manual gives a different rated-energy figure: 5,400 mAh at 5 V, typical 2 A. Because the official sources disagree on that output rating, do not treat either figure as a universal USB-delivered amount; the Wh cell rating and actual device results are different measures.
Conversion and charging losses mean the energy reaching a phone or other device is less than the energy stored in the cells. The usable amount also depends on the bank’s operating conditions and the device being charged. CleverHiker’s NB Air result of roughly 16 Wh usable capacity and its partial-charge estimate are model-specific test findings, not a general conversion factor for every power bank.

Ports, output, and recharge speed to check
Confirm the ports fit your devices and cables
Check whether your devices charge over USB-C, USB-A, or both, and whether you need to charge more than one at a time. Nitecore’s NB10000 Gen3 product page specifies two USB-C ports. It lists up to 22.5 W from either port when used individually, but a maximum combined output of 15 W when both are in use. A bank’s single-port maximum therefore does not necessarily apply when multiple devices are connected.
Include any cable or adapter in your carried-weight calculation. Nitecore’s hosted manual lists a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter as an accessory, which may help with cable compatibility, but it does not eliminate the need to check the plugs required by your own devices.
Consider the outlet time available before departure
Recharge speed matters most when you have limited access to an outlet, such as during a town stop. For the NB10000 Gen3, Nitecore lists USB-C input up to 18 W; this is an input specification, not a promise that every wall charger and cable will recharge it at that rate. CleverHiker’s 3-hour-2-minute result for the Gen4 and its 4-hour-9-minute result for the Gen3 are results from that publisher’s respective test setups, not directly interchangeable manufacturer ratings.

Weather, durability, and cold-weather use
IPX5 is not immersion protection
Nitecore rates the NB10000 Gen3 IPX5. That supports describing it as resistant to water jets or splashes, not safe to submerge. Protect the bank from prolonged exposure to rain, wet ground, and accidental immersion; a rating on one model should not be assumed for another generation or brand.
Plan for reduced performance in cold conditions
Cold can reduce a power bank’s performance. CleverHiker reported an 8.9% efficiency decrease in its refrigerator test of the NB10000 Gen3 in a review published in 2024. In its 2026 comparison, it reported a 13% cold-condition decline for the NB10000 Gen4. These are different publisher tests of different generations, so they should not be read as a direct comparison between Gen3 and Gen4 or as a universal cold-weather loss.

Keep the bank warm during use and storage when temperatures are low—for example, inside a protected pocket or pack compartment rather than exposed on the outside of a pack. Do not assume the printed capacity will remain fully available in the cold.

Durability claims also need context. CleverHiker reported that its Gen3 sample survived an eight-foot drop onto loosely packed dirt and still charged a phone; its UGREEN 145W sample temporarily failed after an eight-foot drop and worked normally again after the next charge. These individual test outcomes are not a standardized promise of survival in a fall, and they do not establish how other models will handle rough treatment.
A practical buying checklist
- Match capacity to the itinerary: choose 5,000 mAh for a limited reserve on a short trip, around 10,000 mAh for a general-purpose balance, or more only for identified additional charging needs.
- Compare carried weight honestly: include cables and adapters, not just the bank’s listed weight.
- Check real device compatibility: verify connector type, per-port output, and combined output if you will charge multiple devices.
- Think through resupply and outlets: a fast input can be useful during short stops, but the charger, cable, and available outlet all affect the result.
- Match protection to conditions: verify the exact model’s water and durability claims; water resistance does not imply submersion safety.
- Expect cold-weather effects: carry and store the bank where it can stay warm rather than relying on rated capacity alone.
- Recheck current availability and price: comparison-page listings are time-sensitive, and specifications should be verified for the precise model generation being sold.
How to choose
For the lightest setup, the 5,000 mAh Nitecore NB Air is the capacity class to consider when one limited phone reserve is enough. For most backpacking use, a 10,000 mAh model is the more flexible balance; CleverHiker currently selects the NB10000 Gen4 in its 2026 comparison, while Nitecore’s published Gen3 specifications provide a distinct, separately verifiable option. Choose a 20,000 mAh-plus bank only when your camera, tablet, laptop, or multi-device charging plan makes the added weight worthwhile.
