The best video-call lighting is soft light in front of you, near camera level—not a bright window behind you. Start by facing a window; if daylight is unavailable or inconsistent, use a dimmable soft light aimed at your face. Adjust it in the camera preview until your face is clear without washed-out highlights or a distracting background.
How to achieve good lighting for video calls
- Start with a window. Sit facing a window so daylight falls on your face. Avoid placing the window behind you: the camera may expose for the bright background and leave your face dark. Daylight is free, but its intensity changes through the day. Elgato’s video-conferencing setup guide recommends checking the light in your actual setup.
- Put the light near the camera direction. A soft source at about face height, close to the camera axis, makes your face easy to see. If the image looks flat, move the source slightly to one side while keeping it soft. For more pronounced shadows, Webex describes using a key light and a softer fill light; a second light is optional, not a basic requirement. Webex’s lighting guide explains the key-and-fill approach.
- Set brightness for balanced exposure. Use the camera or meeting preview to judge the result. Your face should be clear, but highlights should retain detail and the background should not overwhelm you. If your face looks washed out or your glasses reflect the source, dim it, soften it, or shift it off-center. BenQ’s video-conferencing lighting guide discusses these adjustments and common lighting problems.
- Check the room’s color and mixed lights. BenQ suggests roughly 4000K–5000K as a neutral-white starting range, not a universal rule. Match the light to the room and judge the result through your camera rather than relying on the color-temperature number alone.
- Preview before joining. Open your computer’s camera app or the meeting’s preview and check facial brightness, shadows, glasses reflections, and the background. Make adjustments before the call begins; Elgato recommends a pre-call preview.
Which light should you use?
Choose by the problem you need to solve: lighting your face is different from lighting your desk. The options below are general categories, not a product performance ranking.
| Option | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Window light | You have daylight and can sit facing the window. | Free, but changes over time; behind you, it can leave your face dark. |
| Soft LED key light or panel | You need repeatable front light, especially without useful daylight. | Needs a mount or desk space; dim and angle it to avoid glare or overexposure. |
| Ring light | You want compact, direct light on your face. | Can look harsh at close range and reflect in glasses; placement matters. |
| Desk lamp | You already have one or can bounce its light off a wall. | A poorly aimed lamp can create uneven shadows or glare. |
| Clip-on light | You make laptop calls, travel, or need a temporary setup. | Small units may be too small or harsh for a larger desktop setup. |
| Monitor light bar | You want desk illumination with little desk clutter. | It primarily targets workspace lighting and may not give your face enough fill; check whether the model accommodates your camera. |
When comparing lights, check brightness control, softness, mounting compatibility, desk footprint, camera position, and potential glasses glare. Also confirm that the light is meant to illuminate your face rather than mainly your work surface.
If you need to buy a light
Look for a soft key light for video calls or a dimmable LED video light if you cannot get stable front light from a window. A face-level light can provide more controlled illumination; a monitor bar may improve desk lighting without fixing a dark face. Product models, prices, stock, and compatibility vary, so check current details before buying.

How to fix poor lighting on Zoom or FaceTime
- Your face is too dark: The background may be brighter than your face, or your front light may be too weak. Face the window, add soft front light, or reduce the backlight by changing seats or closing curtains.
- Your face looks washed out: Lower brightness, soften the source, or move it a little off-center.
- Your glasses have glare: Move the light away from the camera axis, reduce its brightness, or soften it. A ring light close to the camera line can be especially noticeable in glasses.
- One side of your face has a strong shadow: Move the main light closer to the camera direction or add a softer fill on the darker side.
- Your desk is bright but your face is still dark: A monitor light bar is designed mainly for workspace illumination; it may not replace a dedicated face light, particularly when you are backlit.
Which type of light is best for video conferencing?
For most home setups, the practical starting point is a window in front of you. If daylight is unreliable or unavailable, use a soft, dimmable light near face height and the camera direction. Neither maximum brightness nor a particular light shape guarantees a good image: softness, angle, room conditions, and the camera preview matter more. Webex attributes the purpose of good lighting to Josh Gillick, its creative director: “We are trying to eliminate all of the distractions, all of the things in the way of you and I talking to each other face to face. Improving your lighting, improving the space around you as best you can is one of those elements that helps do that.”
