There is no single best LiDAR sensor or IoT station for every forest project. For detailed 3D structure in plots or around individual trees, start with terrestrial laser scanning (TLS); for canopy and terrain coverage over stands or landscapes, consider airborne laser scanning (ALS). Add an IoT station when you need repeated or continuous readings such as soil moisture, microclimate, or sap flow. These tools answer different questions and can work together.
Which monitoring setup fits your project?
Choose by the area you need to cover and how often you need observations. A scanner records spatial structure during a survey; a sensor station records selected conditions over time. Satellite LiDAR products provide another source of broad-area vertical-structure observations, but they are not equipment you deploy at a plot.
| Approach | Best suited to | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) | Detailed 3D measurements in plots and around trees | Close-range fieldwork, hidden surfaces, scan registration, and substantial processing |
| Airborne laser scanning (ALS) | Canopy and terrain mapping across stands or landscapes | Flight and positioning logistics, acquisition cost, and the need for a consistent sensor configuration |
| Satellite LiDAR products | Regional or global context from sampled forest vertical structure | Mission coverage, product footprint, and update cadence constrain local use; not a project-owned field scanner |
| IoT forest sensor station | Repeated readings of specified environmental or vegetation variables | Power, communications, ruggedness, calibration, and maintenance depend on the station and deployment |
| Embedded-computer LiDAR prototype | Custom experiments and pilot data collection | Integration and field validation are the project’s responsibility; a component combination is not a turnkey station |
When is terrestrial LiDAR the right choice?
For plot-scale structure
TLS scans from the ground at close range. Natural Resources Canada describes terrestrial LiDAR working distances of 1 to 100 metres and accuracy in the millimetre- or centimetre-level range; those are overview figures, not guaranteed performance for any particular scanner. The USGS describes a typical forestry plot of around 0.1 hectare in its discussion of fine-scale TLS, an example rather than a universal plot-size limit.

TLS records 3D points. Outputs such as tree height, stem density, basal area, volume, and biomass are derived estimates whose quality depends on acquisition geometry, processing, and interpretation. Field observations help calibrate and check them.

Plan around occlusion
A laser pulse cannot record a surface hidden behind the first surface it reaches. A scan from one position may miss parts of trunks, branches, or understory vegetation. For tree architecture or plot structure, plan multiple scan positions and a workflow to register the scans into a common coordinate system; more viewpoints reduce blind areas but do not guarantee complete coverage.
Do not treat a workflow speed as a device specification
A 2024 US Forest Service report describes a portable TLS workflow that captured detailed forestry, fuels, and ecological plot features in under five minutes per plot after calibration with initial transect sampling. That result belongs to the documented workflow and its conditions, not to every scanner, forest type, or field setup.
When is airborne LiDAR worth considering?
ALS is the more relevant path when you need canopy and terrain information across stands or much larger areas than a crew can efficiently scan plot by plot. The USGS contrasts fine-scale TLS work with ALS sampling at landscape scales of thousands of hectares. Aircraft or UAV surveys require a suitable flight plan and positioning and navigation equipment to locate returns.
Natural Resources Canada describes state-of-the-art airborne scanners as emitting up to and often exceeding 500,000 laser pulses per second. Pulse rate alone does not determine useful forest detail: coverage, canopy penetration, point density, flight geometry, positioning accuracy, and processing all matter. Natural Resources Canada’s circa-2025 coverage description says ALS covers more than half of Canada’s managed forest area; that is a Canada-specific operational statement, not a global coverage figure.

ALS can produce broad-area canopy metrics and terrain information, and TLS measurements can be linked with airborne measurements. If combining surveys, keep acquisition configurations consistent: Natural Resources Canada cautions that differences among sensor generations and specifications can make merged data non-uniform.
What IoT sensors can monitor between LiDAR surveys?
An IoT station can collect repeated measurements at fixed sites and transmit them remotely. Select one based on the variables the project actually needs—such as soil, stem, vegetation, or atmospheric conditions—and check its sampling schedule, power autonomy, telemetry, calibration needs, enclosure, and service interval. A station measuring a few chosen variables does not provide the same 3D plot structure as LiDAR.
RemoTrees is a forest-monitoring system development project that describes vegetation, soil, stem, and atmospheric variables with satellite communications. Its page also describes six or more months of standalone operation and IP65+ as design aims or capabilities. These should not be read as independent certification or a guarantee for a commercially available finished product.
Are there specific LiDAR products to shortlist?
The available evidence supports choosing a system class and survey design, not naming a current best commercial scanner. A forest biomass review names the RIEGL VZ-400 as an example of a terrestrial scanner, but does not establish current specifications, price, or availability sufficient for a present-day buying recommendation. Confirm the exact model and configuration with the manufacturer or an authorized channel before comparing it with alternatives.

GEDI is a satellite LiDAR mission, not field gear to buy. The US Forest Service describes it as collecting forest vertical-structure observations and supporting products such as canopy height and biomass. Check current mission and product status before relying on it for operational planning.

A published crop-measurement study offers a concrete prototype architecture: a LeddarTech Vu8 solid-state LiDAR, Raspberry Pi 4 for onboard computing, and Navio2 GNSS logger. The authors used a narrow field-of-view sensor to scan a crop canopy profile and reduce data volume compared with all-direction scanning. That is a crop study, not evidence that this combination is designed, validated, or field-ready for forest monitoring.
For a forest pilot, treat components as an integration project: establish the required range and field of view, logger and positioning approach, power budget, enclosure, software, calibration, communications, and repeatability. A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B can serve as an experimental computing component; it is not the LiDAR sensor or a complete field station.

How should you specify and deploy the equipment?
- Define the decision and scale. Specify whether the output is a tree- or plot-level structural measure, a stand or landscape map, or a time series of environmental readings.
- Choose the observation method. Use TLS for close-range detail, ALS for broad coverage, satellite products for regional context, and IoT stations for repeat measurements at fixed locations. Combine methods only when their outputs serve distinct needs.
- Write down measurable requirements. For scanners, compare range, field of view, point density, mobility, registration workflow, calibration, and processing support. For stations, compare measured variables, sampling interval, power, telemetry, enclosure, calibration, and maintenance requirements.
- Design for reference measurements. Pair remote sensing with field observations where estimates need calibration or interpretation. The USGS describes coupling TLS and ALS with traditional field measurements; the Forest Service workflow above used initial transect sampling.
- Keep repeated acquisitions comparable. Document sensor generation and configuration, survey geometry, positioning, and processing choices so that changes between surveys are not mistaken for changes in the forest.
- Validate the field deployment. Check data completeness, point-cloud registration or sensor readings, communications, power, and service needs under the actual site conditions before scaling up.
