For a JavaScript app that renders untrusted SVG in the browser, DOMPurify is the strongest general starting point in the documentation reviewed. It explicitly supports SVG and sanitizes parsed markup using element and attribute allow-lists. sanitize-html is another option when its configurable rules fit your needs. Neither library replaces validation: sanitization applies a security policy, while validation checks structural or specification requirements.
Sanitizing and validating SVG are different jobs
Sanitization removes or restricts markup your application does not want to render, such as scriptable content or unsafe references. Validation checks a defined set of structural or conformance rules. A file can be well-formed XML and still contain content your application should not render; sanitizer output, in turn, is not proof that a file conforms to every SVG requirement.
There is no single universal test for “valid SVG.” The W3C SVG 2 conformance criteria distinguish conformance classes. Depending on your use, the target might be a conforming SVG DOM subtree, an XML-compatible fragment, a standalone SVG file, or a narrower application-specific profile. The SVG media type registration says processors should expect well-formed XML, but cannot assume that input is valid against a particular DTD or schema or that every element and attribute is recognized.
How the main library options compare
| Library | Best fit | What its documentation establishes | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOMPurify | JavaScript applications sanitizing markup for a browser DOM sink | Explicitly supports SVG, parses markup into a DOM, and applies element and attribute allow-lists, including URI checks. | It is not a CSS sanitizer and does not make output safe for every later markup context or transformation. |
| sanitize-html | Applications needing configurable tag, attribute, and URL-scheme rules | Documents configurable allow-lists and special handling for SVG animation that targets URL attributes. | Review the exact configuration and test it against the SVG features your application accepts; allowing script or style can expose the application to XSS. |
AngularJS $sanitize |
Legacy AngularJS applications with a carefully reviewed need for its optional SVG subset | Documents optional support for a subset of SVG elements. | The documentation warns about click-jacking risk and unsafe allow-list extensions. Official AngularJS support ended in January 2022. |
| Laravel SVG Sanitizer | Laravel projects evaluating a PHP-oriented SVG allow-list | The project documents blocking scripts, event handlers, JavaScript URLs, foreignObject, external references, and data URLs. |
These are maintainer claims; check implementation and package activity, and note that the project recommends frontend sanitization as well. |
The comparison reflects documented behavior, not a speed or feature-preservation benchmark. Check current releases, supported runtimes, and security advisories for the exact package version you plan to deploy.

Why DOMPurify is a good general starting point
DOMPurify’s documentation describes a DOM-based approach: it parses markup into an inert DOM, checks nodes and attributes against allow-lists, validates URI-bearing attributes, then serializes sanitized output. It also documents namespace checks and defenses against mutation XSS. Those SVG-specific capabilities make it a practical first candidate for browser applications handling untrusted markup.
Its security goals and threat model set important boundaries. DOMPurify is not a CSS sanitizer. Output sanitized for one context may be unsafe if moved into SVG, XML, an attribute, or raw-text context. Changing sanitized output afterward—or passing it through a library that mutates it—can undo protections. Keep sanitization close to the final rendering sink, and choose a policy for that sink. If your application does not need CSS, DOMPurify documents forbidding style elements and attributes.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
DOMPurify enables SANITIZE_DOM by default to reduce DOM-clobbering risks. For protection against collisions involving custom variables and properties, OWASP also documents the SANITIZE_NAMED_PROPS option in its DOM Clobbering Prevention Cheat Sheet.
Choose an SVG feature policy before choosing settings
Sanitizer settings determine not only what is blocked, but also which SVG capabilities users retain. Decide which features your product genuinely needs, then test the exact configuration against that profile.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Scripts and event attributes: Treat scriptable content as a security concern, not a compatibility detail. OWASP ASVS 4.0.2 requirement 5.2.7 calls for verifying that applications sanitize, disable, or sandbox user-supplied SVG scriptable content, “especially as they relate to XSS resulting from inline scripts, and foreignObject.” See OWASP ASVS V5.2.
foreignObject: It can bring non-SVG content into an SVG document, so include it explicitly in your allow-or-deny decision rather than assuming a generic SVG policy handles your needs.- Links and external references: Decide which URL-bearing attributes and schemes are acceptable, including whether external resources are allowed. Review handling of
href,xlink:href, data URLs, and protocol-relative URLs for your library and configuration. - CSS, filters, and animation: These features can affect rendering and references. DOMPurify does not sanitize CSS;
sanitize-htmlwarns that allowingstylecan expose an application to XSS and discards SVG animation targeting a URL attribute when animation elements are enabled.
A practical workflow for untrusted SVG
The right pipeline depends on whether you insert SVG inline, serve it as a standalone document, load it as an image, or transform it on a server. A useful baseline is to define those choices first, then apply distinct input, security, and conformance checks.
- Set input limits and parsing constraints. Decide acceptable file size and parse behavior before processing user content.
- Parse without executing active content. Use a parsing approach appropriate to the runtime; do not treat a successful parse as a security check.
- Sanitize for the intended sink. Configure an SVG-aware sanitizer with an explicit allow-list for required elements, attributes, and URL behavior.
- Validate the result if conformance matters. Check the specific target—such as XML well-formedness, namespace correctness, standalone-file requirements, or your application’s accepted SVG profile.
- Render or serve with suitable controls. Choose embedding and origin controls appropriate to the delivery context, and avoid post-sanitization transformations that can change the markup.
This is a decision framework, not a universal drop-in sequence: the correct controls differ by rendering context. Neither parsing nor schema validation alone is a security filter.

When to consider alternatives and check advisories
Use sanitize-html when its configurable tags, attributes, and URL schemes better fit the application’s feature policy. Its documentation specifically addresses SVG animation that can change a URL target after sanitization, a useful reminder to consider how features behave over time rather than only their initial markup. Test the exact configuration with the SVG profile your application accepts.
AngularJS $sanitize is generally a legacy-maintenance consideration rather than a default for new projects: its docs describe optional SVG support and warn that enabling or extending it without precautions can create security issues. For PHP applications, the Laravel SVG Sanitizer project describes its own allow-list and recommends frontend sanitization too; verify its current implementation and maintenance before relying on it.

Advisories are version-specific. The GitHub advisories page for enshrined/svg-sanitize lists multiple issues, including advisories published September 1, 2026. That is a reason to inspect the specific advisory, affected versions, fixes, and current release—not a conclusion about every version or deployment. OWASP’s XSS Prevention Cheat Sheet likewise advises regularly patching sanitization libraries as browsers change and bypasses are found.
