For a conventional Java application, start with Apache Maven when a predictable, convention-led build is the priority. Choose Gradle when you need a more extensible build model or to coordinate JVM and other-language work. Keep Apache Ant in view for an existing Ant build or a workflow that needs direct control over targets and tasks. There is no universally best or fastest choice: compare the fit with your project, team and measured builds.
How to choose a Java build tool
All three tools can automate builds, but they make different trade-offs. Maven emphasizes a model and standard lifecycle; Gradle offers a more extensible build model; Ant lets you define targets and tasks without imposing a project layout. The best choice depends on how much convention your project can use, what your team can maintain, and whether an existing build must be integrated.
- Choose Maven for a conventional Java project where a familiar layout and ordered build lifecycle are valuable.
- Choose Gradle when its extensibility suits the project, especially for JVM work or builds coordinating multiple languages.
- Choose Ant when maintaining an existing Ant build or when explicit target-and-task control matters more than standardized conventions.
Maven vs Gradle for Java
Maven and Gradle both support Java dependency and build workflows, but express the build differently. Maven centers the project model in a POM and provides lifecycle phases; Gradle defines a three-stage lifecycle and supports a more extensible build model. Gradle’s Java documentation says its JVM conventions borrow from Maven, so the tools are not wholly unrelated in approach.
| Consideration | Maven | Gradle |
|---|---|---|
| Build model | POM-centered, model-based configuration and plugins. Apache Maven | Extensible build model with initialization, configuration and execution stages. Gradle Build Lifecycle |
| Build sequence | Lifecycle phases run in order; requesting a phase also runs preceding phases in that lifecycle. Maven Build Lifecycle | Gradle separates initialization, configuration and execution. Gradle Build Lifecycle |
| Java-specific support | Java build conventions are part of Maven’s conventional project model. Apache Maven | Java Library Plugin, Java toolchains, repositories and dependency declarations are covered in its Java documentation. Building Java & JVM projects |
| Project structure fit | Conventions help standardize projects, but unusual structures may fit less naturally. Apache Maven | Extensibility can suit builds that need more customization; assess the complexity your team will maintain. Building Java & JVM projects |
| Good starting point | Conventional Java applications and teams valuing a predictable lifecycle. | Projects needing an extensible model, JVM features or coordination across languages. |
When Maven is the better fit
Maven’s POM-centered model, dependency management and plugin ecosystem support a uniform build structure. Its lifecycle is especially easy to reason about when the project follows common conventions: phases such as compile, test, package, verify, install and deploy form an ordered sequence. Running a later phase also runs the preceding phases in that lifecycle. For example, invoking package runs earlier lifecycle work first.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The trade-off is that a project with an unusual layout or highly distinctive process may not fit conventions as neatly. Maven’s own overview acknowledges that nonstandard structure can limit the fit. Check whether the conventions simplify your build or force awkward configuration before committing.
When Gradle is the better fit
Gradle is worth evaluating when the build needs more customization or spans JVM and other-language work. Its Java documentation covers the Java Library Plugin, toolchains, repositories and dependencies. Gradle describes each build as proceeding through initialization, configuration and execution: the stages establish the participating project structure, configure the build, then run the requested work.

Flexibility can help match a build to a project’s needs, but it also makes the build model and scripts a team-maintenance decision. Review what the scripts actually do, how the team will understand them, and whether the added flexibility solves a real problem.
Where Ant fits
Ant describes builds through targets and tasks and does not impose a directory layout. That directness can be useful for existing Ant builds or custom workflows where explicit control is more important than adopting a standardized project structure. Ant’s overview points to Apache Ivy as a possible companion when dependency management is needed; do not assume the same dependency workflow as Maven or Gradle without evaluating the setup.

For a new conventional Java application, compare the maintenance cost of defining and coordinating the build yourself with the conventions offered by Maven or Gradle. For a mature Ant project, replacement is not automatically worthwhile: weigh migration work against a concrete benefit.
Which Java build tool should you use?
- Check the project shape. If a conventional layout and standard lifecycle suit the project, begin with Maven. If the build must coordinate languages or needs more extensibility, evaluate Gradle. If the project already uses Ant or requires explicitly controlled targets and tasks, keep Ant in consideration.
- Check the team. Choose a build model the people maintaining it can understand. Compare the team’s familiarity with Maven POMs, Gradle build scripts and Ant targets rather than treating flexibility as an automatic advantage.
- Check dependencies and integrations. Inventory required libraries, plugins, toolchains, repositories, CI jobs and existing build steps. Confirm the chosen tool supports the workflow you actually need.
- Try a representative build. Build, test and package a realistic project using the candidate tool. Include the work the team runs regularly, not just a minimal compile.
- Measure before deciding on performance. Run comparable builds under the same conditions and with the same work. Record the setup and repeat enough to understand variation; a vendor comparison is not an independent result for your project.
Is Gradle faster than Maven?
There is no established universal fastest choice in the evidence available here. Gradle publishes a Maven comparison and migration guidance that make performance claims, but those are vendor-authored rather than independent benchmark findings. They do not establish that Gradle is faster for every Java application, nor do they settle which tool will be faster for a particular build.

Measure your own representative workload before making speed a deciding factor. Keep the project, dependencies, machine, build tasks and relevant configuration consistent, and distinguish a clean build from repeated builds. Report the conditions with any result; otherwise, a single timing can be misleading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Maven require a standard project layout?
Maven promotes a conventional model and layout, but its documentation notes that nonstandard project structures can make the fit less natural. Evaluate the project structure before relying on the conventions.
Does Ant include dependency management?
Ant’s overview names Apache Ivy as a possible dependency-management companion. Check the workflow you need rather than assuming Ant provides the same dependency model as Maven or Gradle.
