For mounting and browsing an ISO in Windows 10 or Windows 11, start with File Explorer: right-click the ISO and select Mount. Windows opens it as a virtual disc, so you can browse its files without installing another program. A list of 12 current third-party choices is not supportable from the available compatibility information; the one researched alternative, WinCDEmu, officially lists support only through Windows 10.
Mount an ISO with File Explorer
Microsoft documents the same basic process for Windows 11 and Windows 10: locate the ISO in File Explorer, mount it, then open the virtual drive. The Windows 11 download page identifies version 25H2 as the current release as of October 7, 2026; its release labels and instructions may change. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 download instructions.
- Find the ISO. Open File Explorer and browse to the downloaded ISO file.
- Mount it. Right-click the ISO and choose Mount. Windows adds a virtual disc drive.
- Open the disc. Select the new drive in File Explorer to browse or run files from the image.
- Unmount it when finished. In File Explorer, right-click the virtual drive and choose Eject. Microsoft documents this step in its Windows Insider ISO workflow.
If Mount is missing from the menu
Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions recommend associating ISO files with Windows Explorer: right-click the ISO, select Properties, change Opens with to Windows Explorer, and apply the change. Then try the context menu again.

If you are upgrading Windows 11
After mounting the ISO, open its virtual drive and double-click setup.exe to start Windows Setup for an in-place upgrade. This is distinct from creating bootable installation media.

Do you need a third-party ISO mounter?
Not for the ordinary task of mounting an ISO and browsing its contents in Windows 10 or 11. File Explorer already provides that workflow. A third-party tool may be relevant if you need additional image formats or image-creation features, but check its current Windows compatibility before installing it. A tool’s ability to mount an ISO alone does not establish an advantage over Windows’ built-in option.
WinCDEmu: useful features, but Windows 11 support is not established
WinCDEmu’s official page lists support for Windows XP through Windows 10, not Windows 11. It supports ISO, CUE, NRG, MDS/MDF, CCD, and IMG images, allows an unlimited number of virtual drives, and can create ISO images from Explorer. The vendor describes it as free and LGPL-licensed, and says technical support is not available. Those features may suit some Windows 10 users, but the stated OS list does not make it a verified Windows 11 choice. See the WinCDEmu product page.

Mounting an ISO is not the same as making a bootable USB
Mounting gives you access to the files inside an ISO through a virtual drive; it does not create a USB installer. Microsoft’s Windows 11 media-creation workflow calls for a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB and warns that the drive’s contents will be erased. You do not need a USB drive to mount or browse an ISO. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended. This lifecycle change does not alter the basic File Explorer mounting steps, but it matters when deciding whether to keep using Windows 10. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.

Why this is not a verified list of 12 tools
The available official compatibility details do not establish twelve current ISO mounters for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Instead of treating an old compatibility statement or an ISO-mounting feature as proof of Windows 11 support, check each candidate’s supported Windows versions, image formats, licensing, current installer source, and support status. For most users, File Explorer is the simplest supported starting point.
