There is no single internet upload speed that guarantees a reliable 24/7 YouTube music stream. First choose your encoder’s resolution, frame rate and codec; then make sure the connection can sustain that stream bitrate with room for normal fluctuations and other network traffic. For a common static-music setup, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for H.264 at 720p30 or 4 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. Those are encoder ingest bitrates—not recommended ISP plan speeds.
Start with the stream settings, not the ISP plan headline
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the encoder codec, resolution and frame rate. A music stream with a largely static visual may not need a high frame rate, but choose settings that suit the actual visuals and the connection. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates; its settings table also lists 128 Kbps stereo audio. They do not establish the internet plan speed required for a continuous stream.

These are recommended encoder ingest settings from YouTube’s live encoder settings guide. Select the bitrate for the codec you will actually use. For instance, a 4 Mbps H.264 1080p30 stream does not mean a plan advertised at 4 Mbps upload is automatically adequate: that leaves no allowance for variation or competing uploads.
How much upload speed should you plan for?
Use the selected stream bitrate as the starting point, not as a guaranteed plan-speed target. Your real connection needs to carry the stream consistently; fluctuations, other devices, cloud backups and uploads can compete with it. YouTube and TRAI do not prescribe a universal upload-speed multiplier or a single 24/7 speed threshold. Any extra headroom you choose is a practical buffer, not an official requirement.

For example, if you choose H.264 at 1080p30, treat 4 Mbps as the recommended video ingest bitrate and look for an upload connection that can reliably exceed it under real operating conditions. Do not infer that a nominal plan speed alone will deliver that consistency.
Check the connection in India
Compare the provider’s declared typical upload speed, not just the download figure highlighted in an advertisement. TRAI says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband upload or download speed. It requires providers to state typical speeds generally available in their tariff offerings, and to disclose fair-use limits and the speed after a limit is exhausted. TRAI’s requirement that at least 90% of measured test samples meet or exceed the declared typical speed is a provider testing criterion, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service for an individual stream. Use the TRAI MySpeed app or portal to check measured speeds. Also test from the computer and connection that will run the broadcast: a measurement on another device or network does not demonstrate how the stream itself will perform.

- Set the encoder first. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, then configure the streaming software to match. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.
- Measure upload performance on the actual setup. Run speed tests from the streaming computer, preferably at more than one time of day. A single result is only a snapshot.
- Rehearse the real workload. Include the audio and visuals you expect to broadcast. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Watch stream health during the rehearsal and broadcast. If the stream shows connection or bitrate problems, reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution, stop competing uploads, or address instability in the connection before relying on it continuously.
- Check the plan’s fair-use terms. Confirm the data allowance, any fair-use threshold and the speed after the threshold; an initially sufficient upload rate may not describe service after a limit is reached.
A longer rehearsal and repeated checks are sensible for a 24/7 stream because the goal is sustained operation. YouTube’s published guidance does not set a required rehearsal duration or a special 24/7 speed target.

What to compare when choosing a connection
- Typical upload speed: compare the provider’s declared typical upload rate with your chosen encoder bitrate.
- Measured performance: test the actual streaming setup at different times rather than relying on one result.
- Fair-use terms: check the data limit and post-limit speed.
- Shared traffic: account for household devices, backups and other uploads that may use the same connection.
- Extended stability: observe how the connection behaves during a sustained rehearsal; a brief speed test cannot establish 24/7 reliability.
