There is no single “best” image size for every website. Choose an image’s intrinsic dimensions from the width and aspect ratio of the slot where it will render, then serve responsive candidates when that slot changes across viewports or devices. Add accurate width and height attributes, use art direction when the crop must change, and optimize the files as part of the same workflow.
Start with the rendered slot, not a preset
An image’s source pixels and its displayed CSS size are different measurements. A 2,400-pixel-wide source may render in a 760-pixel article column, while a card image might occupy only 320 CSS pixels. The useful starting point is the rendered slot: measure its width and aspect ratio at the layout breakpoints your site actually uses.
Inventory the roles on your site
- Article or documentation images
- Hero or banner compositions
- Card and listing thumbnails
- Product galleries and detail images
- Logos, icons and other transparent graphics
For each role, record the slot width, height or aspect ratio, and whether the composition can be cropped. A fluid image should fit its container without overflowing while retaining its natural proportions. The web.dev responsive-images guidance recommends treating this layout information as the basis for responsive image decisions.
Why a universal dimension chart fails
A fixed “hero size” or “blog size” can be too small for a wide desktop slot, unnecessarily large for a phone, or wrong for a crop that changes at a breakpoint. The correct dimensions depend on your design, content and device-density requirements; the available technical guidance does not establish one universal pixel ladder or byte target.

Choose dimensions for resolution and density
If one composition is used everywhere, provide multiple source widths. A high-density display can require more source pixels than a standard-density display for the same CSS slot, but sending the largest file to every visitor wastes bytes. The browser can select among candidates when you provide a width-descriptor srcset and an accurate sizes value.
Measure the real slot
- Open the page at each relevant layout width.
- Use browser developer tools to inspect the image and note its rendered CSS width.
- Include the effects of sidebars, gutters, padding and max-width containers.
- Record the aspect ratio or fixed height used by the design.
- Repeat for cards, heroes and any component with a different layout.
Do not set sizes="100vw" merely because the viewport is wide. If the image occupies a centered column, sizes should describe that column. MDN’s responsive-images guide explains that the browser combines srcset, sizes, layout and device context to choose a source.
Example responsive markup
<img
src="photo-800.jpg"
srcset="photo-480.jpg 480w, photo-800.jpg 800w, photo-1600.jpg 1600w"
sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 800px"
width="1600"
height="1067"
alt="A descriptive alternative text">
The widths in this example are illustrative, not a universal recommendation. Replace them with candidates generated for your measured slots. The sizes expression must match the actual layout, and the intrinsic dimensions must match the source’s aspect ratio.
Use art direction when the composition changes
Resolution switching supplies different sizes of the same composition. Art direction supplies a different image or crop. If a wide desktop hero becomes a tighter portrait composition on a phone, use <picture> with media conditions rather than forcing one source to serve both jobs.

<source media="(max-width: 600px)" srcset="hero-mobile.jpg">
<img src="hero-wide.jpg" width="1600" height="700" alt="People collaborating in a studio">
</picture>
Keep the fallback <img> complete, including accurate dimensions and alternative text. Use art direction only when the subject, framing or crop needs to change; use srcset and sizes when the composition remains the same.
Always declare intrinsic width and height
Put the source’s intrinsic width and height on the img element, even when CSS makes the image fluid. The browser can calculate the aspect ratio and reserve space before downloading the file, reducing layout movement as content loads. See MDN’s <img> reference and its multimedia performance guidance.
img {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
display: block;
}
For responsive candidates, MDN recommends using the intrinsic dimensions of the largest candidate for the element attributes. Those values must describe the real aspect ratio; do not copy dimensions from a different crop.
Dimensions, aspect ratio and cropping decisions
Fixed-ratio components
Cards and galleries often reserve a ratio such as 4:3 or 16:9. Generate sources in that ratio, or deliberately crop at the image-processing stage. If the component uses CSS cropping, document the focal point so important subjects are not cut off on narrow screens.

Content-led images
Editorial illustrations and screenshots may need their natural ratio. Let them scale down inside the content column, but still declare intrinsic dimensions so the browser reserves the correct height.
Transparent assets
Logos and diagrams can have large transparent margins. Measure the visible artwork as well as the file canvas; an apparently “correct” pixel size may still look too small if the artwork occupies only part of the canvas.
Optimize the complete image workflow
Pixel dimensions are only one part of performance. The web.dev guidance recommends image optimization and compression, but the reviewed documentation does not establish one universally correct format, quality setting, maximum file size or candidate-width ladder. Choose an encoding and quality level by visual inspection and your site’s delivery pipeline, then monitor actual downloads.
- Generate only the source widths your measured slots need.
- Keep aspect ratios and crops consistent with the component.
- Compress each candidate instead of assuming the largest file’s compression is appropriate for all sizes.
- Use caching and a content-delivery strategy appropriate to your stack.
- Recheck pages after theme or layout changes; a changed slot can invalidate old candidates.
How to implement responsive images
- Map slots: list every image role and measure rendered widths at breakpoints.
- Choose composition behavior: decide whether each role needs resolution switching, art direction, or a single source.
- Create candidates: produce source widths that cover the measured slots and likely pixel densities without creating needless files.
- Write markup: add width descriptors in
srcset, an honestsizesexpression, intrinsic dimensions and useful alt text. - Add CSS: constrain the image to its container and preserve its ratio.
- Verify selection: test representative viewport widths and device-pixel ratios in developer tools, then inspect downloaded bytes.
- Review layout stability: confirm that reserved space matches the final rendered ratio and that no content jumps when images arrive.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using one oversized original everywhere
Symptom: mobile pages download a desktop-scale file. Fix: create width candidates and describe the slot with sizes.

Using sizes="100vw" for a narrow column
Symptom: the browser selects a source wider than the image’s actual column. Fix: express the column width, including breakpoint changes, in sizes.
Omitting width and height
Symptom: text or controls move when the image loads. Fix: add accurate intrinsic dimensions and preserve the ratio in CSS.
Confusing art direction with resolution switching
Symptom: a mobile crop is squeezed, letterboxed or visually wrong. Fix: use <picture> for alternate compositions and srcset for alternate resolutions of one composition.
Copying a generic pixel recommendation
Symptom: files are either visibly soft in the slot or much larger than necessary. Fix: measure the rendered component and revise candidates when the layout changes.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
More pixels can preserve detail at a large rendered size or high device density, but unnecessary pixels increase transfer work. Smaller sources reduce bytes but can look soft when the browser must enlarge them. Compare alternatives by rendered slot width, aspect ratio and crop, likely device density, downloaded bytes and whether art direction is required. No candidate wins every axis.
Responsive selection also depends on correct markup and reliable delivery. A stale image transformation cache, a missing candidate URL or an incorrect content type can make the browser fall back to an unintended source. Log generated URLs and verify them independently before publishing.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of your responsive layouts while checking image dimensions, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should width and height match the displayed CSS size?
No. They should represent the image file’s intrinsic dimensions and aspect ratio; CSS can scale the image to its responsive slot.
When should I use picture instead of srcset?
Use srcset and sizes for alternate resolutions of one composition. Use picture when the crop or composition itself changes by condition.
Is there a standard maximum image file size?
The cited technical guidance recommends optimization and compression but does not establish one universal byte limit.
