If you are choosing a media player for a new website, start with the job you need done—not with a requirement that it use jQuery. Modern HTML5 players can work without jQuery, and some popular choices are playback engines rather than complete player interfaces. Video.js is a strong open-source option to evaluate for a new integrated player; JW Player is a commercial platform candidate for features such as advertising and DRM; HLS.js and Shaka Player are better understood as streaming-focused projects to investigate. Plyr remains capable, but its maintainers say it will soon be deprecated in favor of Video.js.
This is a practical shortlist, not a tested or benchmarked top-ten ranking. The available current documentation supports useful comparisons among these projects, but does not establish ten verified current products. Older jQuery-era names are included separately as legacy options rather than presented as current leaders.
How to choose an HTML5 media player
First decide whether you need a ready-to-use interface or only a playback engine. An integrated player typically supplies controls and a customizable presentation; an engine may handle a stream while leaving you to build or connect the interface. Then check the formats, browsers, accessibility needs, and business features your site actually requires.

- Interface and accessibility: check captions, keyboard operation, responsive controls, and whether the supplied UI can be customized.
- Target devices: validate support in the actual browsers, phones, and embedded WebViews used by your audience. A project’s stated browser floor may exclude older devices.
- Operational needs: determine whether advertising, DRM, analytics, casting, hosting, or stream delivery are required. These may depend on a commercial plan or external services.
- Integration and upkeep: check framework or jQuery dependencies, release activity, migration guidance, licensing, and who will maintain the player in your application.
Do not choose from a feature checklist alone: test the exact stream formats and device matrix the site will serve.

Current integrated players and platforms
Video.js 10: open-source player to evaluate for new projects
Video.js is a free, open-source HTML5 player. Its v10 documentation presents the release as a ground-up rewrite for the modern web, with separated UI and renderer components, accessible customizable custom elements, and integrations for HTML5 files and hosted or streaming sources. It does not require jQuery.
For v10, the project’s browser support guide documents minimum versions of Chrome and Edge 111+, Firefox 121+, and Safari and iOS Safari 16.4+. The guide associated those minimums with 91.5% of global web usage using caniuse-lite 1.0.30001810. That percentage depends on the dataset and date; it is not a guarantee about a particular audience or device mix.

The project homepage also illustrates a v10 download at 1.01 seconds/51 kB versus 3.25 seconds/164 kB for v8 on its stated “slow 4G” basis. These are project-published figures, not independent benchmark results, and should not be treated as a prediction of your own page’s load time.

Plyr: useful existing installations, but a migration candidate
Plyr supports HTML5 audio and video as well as YouTube and Vimeo. Its repository lists captions, keyboard shortcuts, picture-in-picture, playback-speed controls, localization, responsive presentation, and integrations with HLS, DASH, and Shaka.
The project maintainers state, “Plyr will soon be deprecated, so give Video.js a try.” No end-of-support date is specified. That makes Plyr worth understanding when maintaining an existing site, but a poor default for new work that needs a long-term support path unless you have verified the project’s current status and accepted the migration risk.

JW Player (JWX): commercial feature-rich platform
JW Player is a commercial comparison candidate, not a like-for-like open-source library. Its web feature matrix lists HLS and MPEG-DASH, adaptive bitrate playback, FairPlay and Widevine web DRM, VAST/VMAP and advertising integrations, caption formats, analytics, Chromecast/AirPlay, and player controls.

Streaming playback projects that may need a separate UI
HLS.js: HLS playback engine, not a finished branded player
HLS.js enables HLS playback in browsers with Media Source Extensions (MSE) support. It should not be mistaken for a complete styled player interface. Pair it with a UI player if you need ready-made controls, and validate native HLS behavior and MSE support on the target devices.
Shaka Player: investigate for streaming-heavy use cases
Shaka Player is another player project with API documentation. The documentation available here is not enough to make a detailed compatibility or feature comparison, so treat it as a candidate for further evaluation rather than assuming support for a particular format, browser, or capability.
What about jQuery media players?
“jQuery player” is a legacy framing, not a useful requirement for most new implementations. Video.js describes v10 as a modern-web rewrite, and Plyr is framework-free; neither needs jQuery simply to provide a player. If your application already uses jQuery, verify whether a candidate’s current integration and lifecycle fit the existing codebase rather than assuming the player itself must be a jQuery plugin.

jPlayer and MediaElement.js: verify before adopting
Historical HTML5 references mention jPlayer and MediaElement.js among media-player solutions, and an older jQuery Mobile cookbook also lists them. Those historical mentions do not establish current maintenance, recent releases, browser compatibility, licensing, or exact jQuery compatibility. Do not select either for a new site based on old lists alone; verify current official documentation and project activity first.

These are candidates, not a universal ranking: the available evidence does not support a definitive current top ten. Other names, including Flowplayer, Clappr, Able Player, and Leanback Player, need current official documentation checks before they can be responsibly characterized here.
