Amnesia: The Dark Descent has the lowest listed minimum requirements among the games compared here, but its Steam listing warns that integrated graphics and very low-budget cards might not work. Darkwood is a more demanding comparison, while Phasmophobia lists minimums intended for VR and Aliens: Dark Descent is a higher-spec reference point. Treat these as published requirements—not proof that a game will run smoothly on your PC. Check the current store listing against your exact hardware before buying.

Which horror games have the lowest listed requirements?

Among these examples, Amnesia: The Dark Descent has the lowest published baseline. That does not make it a guaranteed match for every older computer or integrated GPU: its own listing warns that integrated graphics and very low-budget graphics cards might not work.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Steam describes Amnesia as a first-person survival horror game. Its listing gives these Windows minimums:

  • Operating system: Windows XP, Vista, or 7
  • Processor: 2.0 GHz
  • Memory: 2 GB
  • Graphics: Radeon X1000 or GeForce 6
  • Storage: 3 GB

These are the game’s listed minimums, not a guarantee for modern integrated graphics or newer Windows configurations. The listing’s warning about integrated and very low-budget graphics is particularly important if your PC has no separate graphics card. Steam’s client support is a separate matter: Steam says its client supports Windows 10 and later, which does not change the game’s legacy operating-system entry. See the Amnesia: The Dark Descent Steam listing and Steam Support’s performance guidance.

#1 Best Overall
F.E.A.R. 3 - PC
  • Divergent Co-op: Deep, social gameplay that gives players distinctly different abilities
  • Frenetic Combat: 360 degree cover, evolutionary slow-mo modes, phasing portal systems and best in class mech combat
  • Experience the Almaverse: New sinister enemy creatures birthed in Alma's warped mind spill into reality
  • Masters of Horror: Legendary director John Carpenter and writer Steve Niles provide their expertise on cinematics and story
  • Multiplayer - A twist on classic multiplayer modes set inside the Almaverse provide an experience unique to F.E.A.R. 3

Darkwood

Darkwood is a top-down survival horror option, but its listed minimums are more demanding than Amnesia’s on paper:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i3-2100 or AMD Phenom II X2 565
  • Memory: 4 GB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (1 GB) or AMD Radeon HD 5770 (1 GB)
  • Storage: 10 GB

Its recommended listing raises memory to 8 GB and graphics to the GT 660 or Radeon HD 7870 class. Do not assume a weak integrated GPU meets the minimum simply because the PC has enough RAM. The Darkwood Steam listing names dedicated graphics-card models and memory.

How do Phasmophobia and Aliens: Dark Descent compare?

These two listings help distinguish a game’s general hardware baseline from the conditions attached to that baseline.

Game Minimum operating system and CPU Memory Graphics and API Storage and important qualification
Phasmophobia Windows 10 (64-bit); Intel Core i5-4590 or Ryzen 5 2600 8 GB RAM GTX 970 or Radeon R9 390; DirectX 11 21 GB; Steam Support says the minimum specs are for VR and that lower specs may work for non-VR.
Aliens: Dark Descent Windows 10 or 11; FX-6300 or Core i3-6100 8 GB RAM Radeon R9 380 or GeForce GTX 960; 3 GB VRAM; DirectX 12 60 GB; the listing’s note defines the minimum as 30 FPS at 1920×1080 on low.

Phasmophobia is not an obvious low-end pick based on its listed hardware, and its VR qualification matters: do not present the figures without it. Aliens: Dark Descent is a useful higher-spec comparison, especially because its minimum-performance note is tied to a specific resolution, graphics preset, and frame rate. Neither listing establishes how either game performs on a particular low-end PC. Check the Phasmophobia Steam Support listing and the Aliens: Dark Descent Steam Support listing.

What should you check before buying?

Steam says game requirements are listed on each game’s store page. Compare your computer with that page’s current minimums rather than relying on a general “low-end friendly” label.

  1. Operating system: Check your installed Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit when the game requires it. A legacy game requirement and current Steam client support are separate details.
  2. Graphics card and memory: Compare the named GPU model and required graphics memory, not just the PC’s total RAM or the phrase “integrated graphics.” Steam notes that integrated graphics are generally weaker than dedicated GPUs; Amnesia’s listing specifically warns that integrated graphics might not work.
  3. Processor and available RAM: Match the CPU and memory requirements for that title. Close unnecessary applications if memory is tight: Steam says insufficient available memory can lead to disk swapping and reduced frame rates.
  4. Free storage and graphics API: Make sure the drive has enough free space and check any listed DirectX requirement. Steam cautions that DirectX support alone may not ensure the graphics hardware has the required pixel-shader capability.
  5. Play mode: Verify whether the stated minimum assumes VR. For Phasmophobia, Steam labels the minimum specs as VR requirements and says lower specs may work for non-VR.
  6. Performance expectations: Minimum requirements do not promise high frame rates or smooth play. If a game launches but runs poorly, lowering resolution or graphics settings may help, but available options differ by game.

Steam’s performance guidance advises integrated-graphics users to try low shader detail and windowed mode. These are possible adjustments, not a guarantee that a game will run acceptably.

How to choose between the examples

  • Start with Amnesia if you want the lowest listed baseline among these games, but take its graphics warning seriously—especially on integrated graphics.
  • Consider Darkwood if its top-down format appeals to you and your PC meets its Windows 10 64-bit, CPU, memory, and dedicated-GPU minimums.
  • Check your play mode for Phasmophobia: its stated minimum is specifically for VR; the listing only says lower specs may work for non-VR.
  • Use Aliens: Dark Descent as a higher-spec comparison: its listed minimum includes 3 GB of VRAM, DirectX 12, and a stated target of 30 FPS at 1080p on low.

The published figures establish what the store or support pages list, not tested compatibility or comparative frame rates on low-end hardware. Requirements and platform details can change, so consult each current listing before purchasing.
