Start by testing Hetzner Cloud in Singapore for a YouTube livestream aimed at viewers in India. Hetzner specifically positions Singapore as serving markets including India, but that is not proof it will deliver the fastest or steadiest route from your particular city, ISP, and encoder to YouTube. Choose based on a rehearsal from the network you will actually use, not on geography alone.
Why Singapore is the first Hetzner location to test
Hetzner announced its Singapore Cloud location on 6 August 2024 and said it would create speedy connections to markets including India. Its Singapore Cloud page also promotes the location to customers in India. Those are provider statements about intended connectivity, not independent measurements of latency or reliability for Indian networks. Hetzner’s Singapore launch announcement and its Singapore Cloud page explain the positioning.
So Singapore is a sensible starting candidate, not a guaranteed winner. No route-specific benchmark establishes which Hetzner location performs best for every Indian broadcaster or YouTube ingest path.

What server location can—and cannot—change
Your encoder or relay sends the stream to YouTube; YouTube processes it and delivers playback to viewers. Choosing a server can affect the broadcaster-to-YouTube ingest leg. It does not, on its own, establish how quickly YouTube will serve the stream to viewers in India. YouTube defines live latency as the delay from capture to playback and notes that network congestion and other factors can delay a stream. See YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance.

That distinction matters: a server that improves ingest stability may help avoid interruptions without necessarily reducing every viewer’s end-to-end delay. YouTube’s processing, the selected latency mode, network conditions, and the viewer’s connection all matter.
Hetzner locations to compare
Hetzner’s Cloud location documentation lists Singapore, European locations, and US locations. Its location codes and availability can change, so check the Hetzner Console before deploying. Choose the YouTube latency mode for the show
Server location and YouTube latency mode solve different problems. The mode affects how quickly viewers can see the stream and how much buffering risk they may encounter. YouTube’s recommendations are described in Understand Live Streaming Latency.

- Normal latency: Best suited to non-interactive streams. YouTube describes it as the highest-quality option for viewers because it has the lowest buffering; all resolutions and live features are supported. Consider it for a 4K stream or a broadcast where smooth playback matters more than rapid interaction.
- Low latency: Suited to limited interaction. YouTube says most viewers of a low-latency stream will experience latency of less than 10 seconds. It does not support 4K.
- Ultra-low latency: Suited to real-time engagement. YouTube says most viewers will experience latency of less than five seconds, but buffering may increase and 4K is not supported.
The quoted latency ranges are YouTube’s descriptions, not a promise for each viewer or a result tied to a particular Hetzner location. For a stream where 4K is essential, the low- and ultra-low-latency modes are not options.

How to test Singapore against another location
Run a rehearsal from the actual broadcaster network and encoder or relay setup. A location comparison is useful only if it resembles the event: test the planned protocol, resolution, bitrate, and latency mode, then inspect YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a nearby server is faster.
- Choose candidates: Start with Singapore. Select one or more alternatives that are currently available in the Hetzner Console, such as a European location, if you have a reason to compare them.
- Use the real source network: Test from the broadcaster’s city and ISP, with the encoder or relay configuration planned for the event. A test from a different connection may not represent the route that matters.
- Set upload headroom: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate. Include primary and backup feeds if you use them. Check YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Rehearse representative content: Send audio and video with motion similar to the actual programme. Keep the bitrate, protocol, resolution, and YouTube latency mode consistent across candidate tests.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room: Monitor stream health during each rehearsal. Record ingest stability, dropped frames, disconnects, and any buffering indications. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder settings and streaming guidance.
- Compare the conditions and results: Record the source city and ISP, Hetzner location, ingest method, bitrate, latency mode, test duration, and observed stability. Treat the outcome as specific to that setup, not as a result for all Indian networks or viewers.
Troubleshoot the result before switching locations
- Stream health shows instability or dropped frames: Check whether the source connection can sustain the combined bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Repeat a representative rehearsal and inspect the encoder and YouTube stream-health indicators before attributing the issue to the server location.
- The stream is stable but viewers report delay: Review the YouTube latency mode against the show’s interaction needs. Lower-latency modes can reduce delay but carry more buffering risk; they also do not support 4K.
- Singapore does not perform as expected: Repeat the comparison from the same source network and with the same stream settings in another currently available location. One test does not establish a general winner; route quality can depend on the actual network path.
- Location choices or codes differ from a guide: Confirm current availability and details in the Hetzner Console. The published location documentation may not reflect every later change.
