The right HDMI capture card depends on what you need to record or send to streaming software—not just the highest number printed on the box. Compare the card’s capture resolution and frame rate separately from its passthrough maximum, then check HDR, VRR, connections, software support, and the entire HDMI chain. The three documented options below suit different setups; the available specifications do not establish one universal winner.
Capture versus passthrough: the specification that changes the choice
Capture is the video signal delivered to your computer and recording or streaming application. Passthrough is the signal the card sends onward to a display, such as a monitor or television. A card can pass a high-resolution, high-refresh signal to the display while capturing at a lower resolution or frame rate. Do not treat a passthrough maximum as a recording capability.
Before buying, write down the exact mode you want to capture—such as 4K at 60 frames per second—and the mode you want to see on your display. Check whether HDR and VRR are supported at those particular combinations; a general HDMI version label does not establish every mode.

How to match a capture card to your setup
1. Set the capture target first
Decide what the recording or stream must contain: resolution, frame rate, and whether HDR matters. Then compare that target with the card’s capture specification. For example, the HD60 X is described as capturing HDR up to 1080p60; its 4K60 HDR passthrough figure applies to the display path, not capture.
2. Check the display path independently
List the source device’s HDMI output mode, the card’s input and passthrough modes, and the display’s supported modes. Check refresh rate, HDR, and VRR at the same time. A setup works only to the extent that the source, card, display, and cables support the mode you intend to use.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
3. Choose external USB or internal PCIe
The Elgato 4K X and HD60 X are external USB devices. The AVerMedia GC575 is an internal PCIe card, so it requires a compatible desktop slot and installation. Confirm the host’s interface, available bandwidth, operating-system and software requirements, and the specific model’s current system requirements before purchase.

Check the capture card against the application you plan to use. Elgato lists OBS compatibility for both the 4K X and HD60 X. That does not remove the need to verify the chosen device, host, and application configuration for your operating system and intended signal mode.

5. Check content protection
Protected HDMI video may be blocked from capture. AVerMedia’s GC575 manual explicitly says the card does not support viewing, recording, or streaming HDCP-protected signals. Check the source and card documentation for restrictions before assuming that any HDMI output can be captured.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Reading passthrough as capture: compare the capture column with your recording target, not the display’s maximum mode.
- Assuming HDR works in every mode: the HD60 X’s HDR capture is limited to specified combinations; confirm the exact one you need.
- Relying on “HDMI 2.1” alone: verify resolution, refresh rate, VRR, and HDR together across source, card, display, and cables.
- Buying an internal card for an incompatible host: check PCIe slot availability and system requirements before choosing the GC575.
- Assuming protected video will capture: HDCP restrictions can prevent viewing, recording, or streaming.
- Assuming every app and computer is supported: confirm application compatibility and the card maker’s current host requirements for your setup.
What to verify before ordering
- The exact capture resolution and frame rate you need.
- Whether HDR capture is supported at that exact mode.
- The passthrough mode required by your monitor or television, including VRR if relevant.
- USB or PCIe fit, host bandwidth, operating-system requirements, and application support.
- HDMI and USB cable connectors and capabilities for the chosen signal path.
- Whether the source content is protected by HDCP.
- Current model revision, regional availability, and price with the manufacturer or seller; those details are not established by the specifications cited here.
