For a typical 1080p30 video, start with HandBrake’s Fast 1080p30 preset, keep the source frame rate when practical, and check the output dimensions before encoding. Treat HandBrake’s file-quality or file-bitrate controls separately from the live encoder settings you use to send a stream to YouTube: for 1080p30 H.264 live ingestion, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 14 Mbps CBR, while its 1080p SDR H.264 upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps at standard frame rates. Those figures serve different workflows.
Recommended HandBrake settings for a typical 1080p30 video
Use these as a practical starting point, not a promise of ideal quality for every source. HandBrake’s official preset documentation calls Fast 1080p30 a good choice for getting started and describes it as fast and compatible with a wide range of software and devices. The preset table identifies MP4, H.264 video and AAC stereo audio.
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Preset | Fast 1080p30 | A broadly compatible starting point for conventional 1080p30 material. |
| Container and video codec | MP4 with H.264 | Matches the common HandBrake preset output and is a straightforward compatibility choice. |
| Dimensions | Keep 1920×1080 if the source is already 1920×1080 and that is your intended output. | Presets can downscale a source that exceeds their maximum dimensions. Check the output summary rather than assuming the source size is retained. |
| Frame rate | Same as Source | Preserves the source’s timing rather than creating an unnecessary conversion. If the downstream workflow requires fixed frame rate, test CFR at the source’s actual rate. |
| Encoder speed preset | Start at the default or a neutral option such as medium. | Slower settings trade encoding time for potential compression efficiency; the result depends on the source and hardware. |
| Quality or bitrate | Use constant quality when visual consistency matters and file size may vary; use average bitrate when you need a target size or storage budget. | There is no established universal RF value for all 1080p videos intended for a 24/7 playlist. |
| Audio | AAC stereo for ordinary stereo material. | This is the common preset choice. YouTube’s live audio recommendation is a separate live-encoder setting. |
| Tune and advanced options | Leave at default/none unless you have a specific reason to change them. | Tunes and advanced options can affect compatibility; use them only when you understand the tradeoff. |
Choose frame rate from the source, not the stream label
Do not convert a 24, 25 or 30 fps source to 60 fps simply because the eventual stream is 1080p or because a streaming service can output at a higher frame rate. If your source is 60 fps and you want to retain that motion detail, HandBrake’s Creator 1080p60 preset is a relevant alternative for creator-oriented web output. Fast 1080p30 is the more fitting starting point for ordinary 1080p30 material. The appropriate choice depends on the source and intended output; a 60 fps preset does not make a lower-frame-rate source contain genuine 60 fps motion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →HandBrake’s frame-rate documentation describes Same as Source as supporting variable frame rate (VFR). Its Peak Frame Rate (PFR) control is a ceiling: it leaves portions at or below the selected rate unchanged and limits higher-rate portions. The documentation page describes this control as a threshold or limit and is labeled a draft, so verify behavior in your current HandBrake version if frame timing is critical. If the receiving workflow needs constant frame rate, test CFR at the source’s actual rate rather than selecting a higher rate arbitrarily.

Choose quality by inspecting representative footage
Constant quality lets the file size vary to pursue a consistent visual-quality target; average bitrate is useful when a size or storage budget matters. No single RF value is established as best for every 1080p playlist. Encode a short, representative segment first and compare fine detail, noise and motion; also check its resulting file size before encoding a full library. Treat that as your own evaluation, not as a universal numeric recommendation.
Start with the encoder’s default speed preset or a neutral choice such as medium. Slower encoding may improve compression efficiency, but it takes longer and results vary with source and hardware. Changing encoder speed can require retuning quality or bitrate. Leave specialized tunes and advanced options alone unless the material has a clear characteristic—such as animation or film grain—and you understand the possible compatibility and quality tradeoffs.

HandBrake file bitrate is not YouTube Live bitrate
A HandBrake file’s constant-quality or average-bitrate choice determines how the video is encoded into a file. YouTube’s live-ingestion bitrate is configured later, in the live encoder or streaming software that sends the feed. Do not set HandBrake’s file bitrate by copying YouTube’s live recommendation.
YouTube’s upload encoding guidance for 1080p SDR H.264 recommends 8 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps). It recommends matching the recorded frame rate and using progressive scan. These are upload recommendations, not the separate live-feed settings below.

Set the live encoder for YouTube
After preparing the video, configure the live encoder that sends the stream to YouTube. YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed 2026, gives the following bitrate recommendations and minimums. Platform guidance can change, so check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring a long-running broadcast.
| Live video format | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | Not stated in the cited guidance |
These values are live-ingestion guidance, not instructions for the HandBrake output file. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for the live feed and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. It recommends RTMPS for the protocol. For SDR, use Rec. 709. YouTube’s advanced guidance also specifies square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames and CABAC. Select AV1 or H.265 only if the chosen live encoder and ingestion workflow support that codec; H.264 is the straightforward compatibility choice.

For live audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. That is guidance for the live encoder, not a requirement to re-encode every source file to that bitrate. A HandBrake AAC stereo track is a sensible ordinary-stereo starting point.

Prepare and check the file before a long stream
- Select the preset: choose Fast 1080p30 for typical 1080p30 footage, or consider Creator 1080p60 when the source is 60 fps and that output is intended.
- Check the output summary: confirm the expected 1920×1080 dimensions, MP4 container, video codec and audio track. Do not assume a preset retained dimensions if the source is larger than its maximum output size.
- Confirm frame-rate behavior: use Same as Source when preserving timing is appropriate. If your streaming pipeline requires fixed frame rate, test CFR at the actual source rate and confirm playback in that pipeline.
- Encode a representative sample: include the kinds of motion, fine detail and noise found in the playlist. Compare constant quality or average-bitrate results and inspect both visual quality and file size.
- Check playback and audio: play the encoded sample through the intended streaming workflow. Confirm there are no unexpected black frames, missing audio, sync problems or playback failures before relying on it for an extended broadcast.
- Configure the live encoder separately: set the supported codec, CBR, keyframe interval, protocol and audio settings for YouTube Live. For 1080p30 H.264, YouTube’s current recommendation is 14 Mbps for the live feed.
- Test the complete stream: use audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, check that outbound internet capacity can sustain the live bitrate with headroom, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Keep monitoring audio and video quality during operation.
24/7 operation: the file is only one part of the pipeline
A good HandBrake encode does not guarantee a continuous broadcast. The live encoder, outbound connection, playback system and YouTube ingest all have to keep working. YouTube advises testing before going live, checking upload capacity, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. A local setup therefore needs a playback and encoding system plus a connection that can sustain the outgoing bitrate; the HandBrake preset itself does not provide continuous service or uptime.

Copyright and monetization checks for a 24/7 playlist
Encoding settings do not grant rights to the material. Before putting a video in a continuous YouTube stream, make sure you have the necessary rights or permission for the video and its audio, including music, artwork and other incorporated material. A stream can encounter copyright claims or interruptions even if the file plays correctly. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization assessments are also separate from whether a stream can technically run; looping content is not, by itself, evidence that a channel meets monetization requirements. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before relying on a 24/7 stream for monetization.
Troubleshooting common quality and streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Output is smaller than 1920×1080 | HandBrake preset maximum dimensions or source dimensions. | Check the source and output summary; select an appropriate size that does not downscale the intended 1080p output. |
| Motion looks uneven or frame timing is unexpected | Frame-rate conversion or VFR/CFR handling. | Try Same as Source, or test CFR at the source’s actual frame rate if required by the downstream workflow. Avoid converting lower-rate material to 60 fps without a specific need. |
| File is too large for storage | Constant-quality setting or source complexity. | Try average bitrate when a predictable size matters, or compare a short sample at a different quality setting before encoding the full library. |
| Image quality is poor despite a suitable preset | Source quality, quality/bitrate setting, or unnecessary frame-rate conversion. | Inspect a representative segment, compare detail and motion, and adjust the file-encoding choice. Do not use YouTube’s live-ingestion bitrate as a substitute for HandBrake quality selection. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | Insufficient or inconsistent outbound capacity, live bitrate or encoder configuration. | Check the live encoder settings and available upload capacity; test with comparable motion and monitor stream-health messages. Ensure the connection can sustain the stream bitrate continuously. |
| Live stream fails to connect or ingest | Stream key, protocol, codec support or live encoder configuration. | Verify the correct YouTube stream key is configured, use RTMPS as recommended, and confirm YouTube and the selected encoder support the chosen codec and settings. |
| Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync | Source audio track, HandBrake output or live audio configuration. | Check that the encoded file has the intended audio track, play it before streaming, and verify the live encoder’s audio codec and settings. |
| A stream is interrupted despite a correct encode | Playback machine, encoder, connection or YouTube ingest. | Check the whole live pipeline rather than re-encoding automatically. Test and monitor the live event; the file preset cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use Fast 1080p30 for a 1080p60 source?
Not if your goal is to retain 60 fps. Consider HandBrake’s Creator 1080p60 preset when the source is 60 fps and you want 60 fps output.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a 14 Mbps HandBrake file meet YouTube’s 1080p30 live recommendation?
Not necessarily. YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation applies to the 1080p30 H.264 live feed, not to HandBrake’s file encoding bitrate.
Can I loop any video on YouTube for 24 hours?
A technically playable file is not automatically cleared for streaming or monetization. You need appropriate rights to the content, and channel monetization is assessed under YouTube’s policies.
