For smooth performance in a PC RPG, start at your display’s native resolution, choose a normal or high preset, and use a supported upscaler at the best-quality mode that meets your frame-rate target. If performance still falls short, reduce demanding effects—especially ray tracing—one setting at a time, then retest in representative gameplay. There is no universally best preset: the right balance depends on the game, graphics card, available video memory, and whether you value sharper images or higher frame rates.

What “smooth performance” means

A high average frame rate is only one part of a smooth experience. Frame-time consistency affects whether motion feels steady; screen tearing occurs when displayed frames and monitor refresh are out of sync; and input latency affects how quickly controls respond. These are related but different problems, so first identify what feels wrong rather than changing every graphics option at once.

  • Low or unstable frame rate: reduce the most demanding rendering settings and measure again.
  • Screen tearing: consider synchronization options such as VSync, which AMD describes as synchronizing frame rate with monitor refresh. Its behavior and trade-offs depend on the game and display.
  • Delayed controls: frame generation is not a latency-reduction feature. NVIDIA describes Reflex as a separate technology intended to reduce system latency; support depends on the game and hardware.

For a general overview of settings that affect performance, see MSI’s guide to graphics settings that matter. Its rankings are useful starting guidance, not a guarantee for every RPG or PC.

How graphics presets, upscaling, and anti-aliasing differ

Graphics presets change the game’s rendering settings

Presets such as Performance, Balanced, Quality, or Max Quality generally bundle several graphics choices. The exact settings behind each label are game-specific. Epic Games Store describes Quality as favoring image crispness, with Balanced and Performance making progressively stronger image-quality and frame-rate trade-offs. Treat that as a general pattern, not a promise that two games’ identically named presets behave alike. “Custom” usually means the individual options can be set separately; check the game’s own descriptions to see what a preset changes.

Upscaling renders lower, then reconstructs the output

Upscaling renders the scene at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs an image for the display’s output resolution. DLSS Super Resolution and FSR 2 are examples, when implemented by the game and supported by the system. Their modes typically trade image detail for performance: a Quality mode aims to preserve more detail than a more aggressive Performance mode, but results vary by title, resolution, and implementation. Start with the best-quality mode that reaches your target and compare the image during actual play.

Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges; DLAA is not an upscaler

Anti-aliasing (AA) reduces visible jagged edges, and its performance cost depends on the method and settings. AMD notes that higher AA levels can lower FPS. NVIDIA defines DLAA as anti-aliasing at native resolution, while DLSS Super Resolution upscales from a lower-resolution render. So an AA menu that offers DLAA and DLSS is not simply presenting different strengths of the same feature. FXAA is another AA method; the game determines which choices it offers and how they interact with its other options.

Frame generation creates additional frames

Frame generation inserts or generates frames between traditionally rendered frames. It is separate from upscaling, and availability depends on the game’s implementation and hardware. Generated frames can increase the displayed frame rate, but do not treat that number as proof of lower input latency or as a substitute for a stable rendering baseline.

Epic’s ray-tracing optimization guide also emphasizes balancing image quality and performance; its recommendations are broad because options differ between games.

A practical order for tuning an RPG

  1. Set your target. Choose the display resolution and a frame rate you want to sustain, then decide whether you prefer sharp native rendering or more visual effects. Avoid tuning toward an arbitrary preset name.
  2. Begin with a normal or high preset. Ultra or Max Quality is not required for a good-looking game. Use a built-in benchmark or a demanding, repeatable gameplay route to establish how it performs.
  3. Reduce ray tracing first if it is enabled. Test a lower ray-tracing quality or turn it off, then replay the same scene. Ray tracing can be demanding, but its visual importance varies by game. Epic recommends starting ray tracing at medium and adjusting to suit the system.
  4. Test a supported upscaler. Try its best-quality mode first, then move toward Balanced or Performance only if needed. Compare fine detail, motion, and image stability at your usual output resolution.
  5. Adjust resolution or shadows in small steps. Lowering render resolution reduces the amount of work needed to draw the image, but can make it softer. Shadow quality is another useful setting to reduce if performance remains short. Change one option at a time so you can tell what helped and what image compromise it introduced.
  6. Change textures only when video memory is a concern. Texture quality is often more about VRAM use and texture streaming than a direct first-line FPS control. If textures load slowly, appear late, or the game is under video-memory pressure, lower texture quality one notch and check again. If memory is not the issue, you may be able to keep higher-resolution textures while lowering more expensive lighting or resolution settings.
  7. Retest under comparable conditions. Use the same demanding route or built-in benchmark after each meaningful change. AMD’s Game Advisor documentation describes reports that can include average FPS and 95th-percentile frame-time information, recommendations, and a rerun after adjustments. Feature support and menus depend on configuration and software version; AMD’s separate graphics-settings guide uses Adrenalin 23.9.1 and a Radeon RX 7900 XTX as its example, so its exact interface may differ on other systems.
  8. If there is headroom, spend it deliberately. Raise image-quality settings gradually, or cap the frame rate at a level that suits your display and preference. A cap is an option, not a universal fix.

Which settings usually matter most?

Setting or feature What changing it can do When to adjust it
Display or render resolution Lower resolution reduces rendering workload but makes the image less detailed or sharp. When GPU performance is short and a softer image is acceptable, or as part of an upscaling setup.
Ray tracing Lower quality or disabling it can reduce rendering workload; the visual difference depends on the game. Early in tuning when ray tracing is enabled and performance is below target.
Upscaling mode A more performance-oriented mode can improve rendering performance while making greater image-quality trade-offs. When supported and native rendering does not meet the target; use the highest-quality mode that suffices.
Shadow quality Lowering shadows can be a useful performance adjustment, with a visual cost to shadow detail. After testing ray tracing and upscaling, if you still need more performance.
Texture quality Primarily affects video-memory use and texture streaming; it is not necessarily the best setting to lower for every FPS problem. When memory pressure, late-loading textures, or streaming problems point to VRAM limits.
Anti-aliasing Smooths jagged edges; performance cost depends on the method and level. DLAA operates at native resolution, unlike DLSS Super Resolution upscaling. When edge quality needs adjustment, or when testing whether an AA method is contributing to performance cost.

These are general tendencies, not a universal ranking for every RPG. GPU capability and VRAM limits matter, and a setting’s cost can change with the game, scene, resolution, and implementation. The official NVIDIA Control Graphics and Performance Guide illustrates why game-specific figures should not be generalized: its 2019 measurements describe Control under its own test conditions, not an expected result for other RPGs.

Where to get help measuring changes

Use a built-in benchmark when the game provides one; otherwise repeat a gameplay section that regularly stresses the system. Keep the route, resolution, and other settings consistent. A menu or quiet opening area may perform very differently from a busy combat encounter or a scene with complex lighting. Record average frame rate and, if your available tool reports it, frame-time information; then compare after each change. AMD’s Game Advisor instructions describe the reporting workflow for supported configurations.

For definitions of NVIDIA’s technologies and the distinction between DLSS, Smooth Motion, and Reflex, consult the NVIDIA Driver Installation Guide. Feature availability and labels vary with the game’s implementation and hardware.
