For a practical starting point, use the current Breath of the Wild Graphics pack at its default 1280×720 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio, select Vulkan, and enable Async shader compile if your system supports it. Keep anti-aliasing at its default and start with moderate or default shadows. Turn on FPS++ for a higher frame-rate target, but return to 30 FPS if a quest or gameplay event misbehaves. There is no single best preset for every PC: resolution, sustained performance, renderer compatibility, and gameplay correctness all depend on your system.
Before changing graphics settings
Make sure the game and graphics packs are current. Cemu’s game installation guide says Breath of the Wild requires its latest update to function. The Cemu Wiki entry for Breath of the Wild says V208 (1.5.0) is needed for FPS++ and many other graphics packs. In Cemu, open the game’s Edit graphics packs window and update the community packs as directed by the Cemu optimization guide.
Recommended starting settings
| Setting | Starting point | When to adjust |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics pack resolution and aspect ratio | 1280×720, 16:9; these are the current pack defaults in the Breath of the Wild Graphics pack rules. | Raise resolution only if your GPU can sustain your target frame rate. |
| Renderer | Vulkan, Cemu’s recommended first try. | Compare with OpenGL if Vulkan causes compatibility or rendering problems on your system. |
| Async shader compile | Enable it where supported; Cemu recommends it as a general performance setting. | Use Cemu’s general settings guidance if you encounter a system-specific problem. |
| Anti-aliasing | Leave the default initially. | Change it only after evaluating the default; the pack also supports an NVIDIA option or disabling anti-aliasing. |
| Shadow resolution | Default or moderate. | Raise it for sharper shadows if performance remains smooth; keep it at or below 300%. |
| Shadow draw distance | Very High, the balance recommended by Cemu’s optimization guide. | A higher distance draws shadows farther away but can make them blurrier. |
| FPS++ | Enable for a higher frame-rate target; its guide default is 60 FPS. | Use 30 FPS if a quest, event, or physics behavior goes wrong above 30. |
The settings above are recommendations and pack defaults, not benchmark results. Cemu advises testing resolution on your own system because Breath of the Wild can be demanding on graphics hardware, particularly at higher resolutions and frame rates. See the Cemu guide to optimizing Breath of the Wild and the Cemu FAQ for the project’s general performance guidance. Community Graphic Packs version 4 supports both Vulkan and OpenGL, according to the Community Graphic Packs project.

What resolution should you use?
Start at the pack’s default 1280×720 and move upward only while the game holds your chosen frame-rate limit in demanding areas. You can try 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, but no source establishes a resolution that will work best on every GPU. Supersampling beyond your monitor’s native resolution can improve anti-aliasing, but it is computationally expensive.

To compare settings fairly, use a repeatable area of the game and change one setting at a time. Check performance after the game has settled, not only at startup. If the higher resolution makes performance uneven, return to the previous setting before changing several other options.
Vulkan or OpenGL?
Try Vulkan first: Cemu recommends it as a general starting renderer, and its Breath of the Wild optimization guide specifically suggests Vulkan for higher resolutions. OpenGL is a useful comparison if Vulkan produces rendering or compatibility problems on your PC. The available guidance does not establish that either renderer is faster on every GPU.

How to tune shadows and anti-aliasing
Anti-aliasing
Keep anti-aliasing at its default while establishing a stable baseline. The graphics pack provides alternatives, including an NVIDIA option or disabling anti-aliasing, but changing it is best treated as a later image-quality adjustment rather than a required first step.
Shadow resolution and draw distance
Higher shadow resolution can sharpen shadows, while lowering it can help performance. Cemu warns that 400% may cause instability and recommends no more than 300%. Shadow draw distance is separate: increasing it makes shadows appear farther away but can make them blurrier. Cemu recommends Very High as a balance. See the optimization guide for these game-specific recommendations.

How to get a higher frame rate without overlooking game issues
Enable FPS++ when you want a higher frame-rate target; Cemu’s guide lists 60 FPS as its default. However, Breath of the Wild’s physics expect a constant timestep, and the Cemu Wiki documents unresolved issues above 30 FPS. A higher target is therefore not a guarantee of bug-free gameplay.
- Enable FPS++ and play normally at your chosen target.
- If a particular event, quest, or physics behavior misfires, set the FPS++ limit to 30 FPS and retry it.
- If the issue remains, try Static mode at 30 FPS or disable FPS++.
The 30 FPS setting is a troubleshooting fallback, not a claim that every issue above 30 FPS has the same cause. The caveat is documented in the Cemu Wiki’s Breath of the Wild entry.
What to change if performance is poor
- Lower resolution. This is a direct way to reduce graphics workload, especially if you selected a resolution above the pack’s 1280×720 default.
- Lower shadow resolution. Reduce it before raising other quality settings again.
- Check system conditions. The Cemu Wiki advises checking for thermal throttling and laptop power or ventilation issues.
- Consider VRAM constraints. The Cemu Wiki notes that Vulkan users with less than 4 GB of VRAM may encounter VRAM-related performance problems and suggests lowering resolution and shadow settings as possible mitigations. This is a troubleshooting note, not a promise that 4 GB or more guarantees smooth performance.
For a useful comparison, assess sustained performance, image clarity, shadow quality, renderer compatibility, and whether gameplay behaves correctly at your chosen frame-rate limit. Cemu’s guidance does not supply a precise FPS expectation for unspecified hardware.
