The best Google Photos alternative depends on what you want to improve: iCloud Photos is the most natural fit for an Apple household, Proton Drive is worth considering for privacy-focused cloud storage, and Synology Photos gives self-hosters more control if they are willing to buy and maintain a NAS. OneDrive is a practical general-purpose option for Microsoft users. None is a feature-for-feature replacement for everyone: weigh device compatibility, storage, sharing, privacy, and how you will recover a copy if something goes wrong.

Also distinguish syncing from backup. A synced library keeps files available across devices; that alone does not establish that a separate, recoverable copy is protected from deletion or hardware failure. The service information below describes storage, sync, and upload features, not a universal disaster-recovery guarantee.

Which Google Photos alternative should you choose?

Option Best fit What to weigh
iCloud Photos Households that primarily use Apple devices Apple integration and shared photo features; the full experience is not established as identical on Windows, Android, and Apple devices.
Proton Drive People prioritizing a privacy-oriented cloud storage model Proton states that files and names are encrypted on-device before upload; the evidence here does not establish Google Photos-equivalent search or editing.
Synology Photos People who want a self-hosted library and can operate a NAS Requires Synology hardware, disks, setup, and ongoing maintenance; it is not an off-site copy by itself.
OneDrive People already using Microsoft services who want general-purpose cloud storage Check current photo-upload behavior, storage capacity, and plan terms before deciding.
Amazon Photos Some existing Amazon Prime customers Verify country eligibility and current photo and video terms directly with Amazon before relying on a particular allowance.

What you give up when leaving Google Photos

Google Photos combines automatic backup, search, organization, editing, and sharing. Google says a Google Account includes 15 GB shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive, so the usable space for pictures may be substantially less than 15 GB if email or Drive already uses some of it. Google lists Storage saver, Original quality, and Express quality options; Original-quality uploads count toward account storage. It says full-resolution RAW photos and large 4K videos can be stored, subject to account limits and selected quality. Google Photos product details and Google storage and account limits.

Google’s help page says new photos and videos cannot be saved when the account is out of storage. It also describes possible deletion after two years of inactivity or being over quota, with notice under the stated policy. Account and retention policies can change, so check Google’s current help page before relying on a particular retention period.

iCloud Photos: simplest for Apple-centered households

Apple says iCloud Photos stores high-resolution originals in iCloud and can keep space-saving versions on devices. Shared Albums support adding photos, videos, and comments over time, including contributions from people using Android or Windows. Shared Photo Library can include up to five other people. These sharing options can help a mixed-device household, but do not assume the complete Apple Photos experience is the same on every platform. See Apple iCloud+.

Apple’s US page displayed these monthly iCloud+ prices when accessed on October 4, 2026. They are regional, subject to change, and should be checked for the reader’s market before purchase.

Proton Drive: privacy-oriented cloud storage

Proton advertises automatic photo backup from mobile devices, collaborative albums, and apps for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and the web. Proton says files and their names are encrypted on the device before upload, so only the user and chosen recipients can access their contents. That is Proton’s description of its encryption model, not an independent security audit. Proton’s product page listed 5 GB on Proton Free when accessed in 2026; paid tiers offer more storage, but the price display did not establish reliable amounts. See Proton Drive.

Choose Proton for its stated privacy approach and cross-platform availability, not on the assumption that its search, editing, organization, or family-library tools match Google Photos; those capabilities are not established here.

Synology Photos: control at the cost of hardware and upkeep

Synology Photos requires a Synology NAS and stores the library on that device. Synology says its mobile app can automatically back up new photos and videos. It also describes timeline and folder views, RAW support, face and object recognition, conditional albums, and sharing controls such as passwords and expiration dates. Some HEIC or HEVC formats may require Synology Image Assistant, depending on the DiskStation Manager version. See Synology Photos features and requirements.

Amazon Photos: verify the terms for your country

Amazon Photos may be relevant to some existing Prime customers, but the available comparison information does not establish Amazon’s current country-specific eligibility, photo allowance, video allowance, or account terms. Confirm those details on Amazon’s official service page for your market before moving a library or counting on a particular amount of storage. Do not assume Prime benefits or media limits are identical everywhere.

Choose using the details that affect your library

  • Devices and access: List the phones, computers, and browsers everyone in the household actually uses. A service that works on one person’s iPhone but is awkward for the rest of the family can undermine sharing and regular backup.
  • Capacity and file types: Estimate the library’s size and growth, including videos, RAW images, and high-resolution clips. Check whether storage is shared with documents or email and whether uploads preserve originals or offer compression choices.
  • Cost over time: Compare recurring cloud fees with the upfront cost of NAS hardware and disks, plus electricity and maintenance. A self-hosted system shifts work and responsibility to you rather than eliminating them.
  • Privacy model: Identify whether files are held by a cloud provider or on hardware you operate, who is said to hold encryption keys, and whether a privacy statement is the provider’s claim or an independent assessment.
  • Upload and deletion behavior: Confirm when mobile uploads run, what happens when storage fills, and whether deleting a file on one device also removes it elsewhere. Check whether version history or a recoverable deleted copy is documented; the feature pages reviewed here do not establish a universal deletion-protection comparison.
  • Library tools and sharing: Consider search, people or object grouping, editing, albums, collaborative contributions, and family sharing. Do not assume a cloud drive offers the same photo-specific tools as Google Photos.
  • Leaving later: Check how you can download or export originals and whether metadata and album structure will carry over. The available service details do not establish identical export fidelity across providers.

How to switch without losing photos

  1. Inventory the source: Check the size and contents of your Google Photos library, note any shared or collaborative albums, and confirm which quality setting you used.
  2. Export or download before changing anything: Obtain a copy of the source library and keep it intact. Do not delete source files to make room until the destination is checked.
  3. Upload to the destination: Enable the target service’s appropriate upload or backup option and allow the transfer to finish. Large libraries and videos may take time; do not treat an upload queue as proof that the files are safely stored.
  4. Verify the result: Compare counts where possible, then open representative originals, videos, and older items. Check dates and other metadata, and confirm that shared albums or collaboration needs are met.
  5. Keep a separate recoverable copy: A cloud sync or a single NAS does not, by itself, prove that a second copy can be recovered after deletion, device failure, or a disaster. Maintain another copy in a separate location if the photos are important.

Bottom line by reader type

Start with iCloud Photos if your household is Apple-centered, Proton Drive if Proton’s stated encryption model is your priority, and Synology Photos if you want to operate your own NAS. OneDrive is worth checking when Microsoft integration matters; Amazon Photos warrants a closer look only after you verify the terms that apply to your location. In every case, transfer and verify the library before removing the original, and do not treat a single synced copy as a complete recovery plan.
