If you want another RPG after Octopath Traveler I and II, choose based on what you want to keep: HD-2D visuals, turn-based party battles, flexible jobs, or a cast of distinct travelers. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is the clearest visual-style follow-up; the Bravely Default series is a better fit for job flexibility; and Triangle Strategy is worth considering if you want to trade party battles for tactical-grid combat.
Start with what you want to keep from Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler II combines retro pixel art with 3D computer-generated visuals in Square Enix’s HD-2D style. Its eight travelers have distinct origins and skills, and its battles center on job and skill development alongside the Break and Boost systems. Path Actions give characters different ways to interact with townspeople, including obtaining items and recruiting help. Those features make a useful checklist for choosing a follow-up, but no single recommendation reproduces the whole package.

- Visual presentation: Look first at Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake or Live A Live.
- Jobs and turn-based combat: Try the Bravely Default series.
- Tactical battles: Consider Triangle Strategy, knowing that its combat format differs from Octopath’s party battles.
Best follow-ups by preference
For another HD-2D adventure: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
This is the most direct recommendation if Octopath’s blend of pixel-art characters and dimensional environments is what you want to see again. It shares a visual approach, not necessarily Octopath’s eight-character structure, Path Actions, or battle systems. Choose it for the presentation rather than expecting the same kind of story or combat.
For flexible jobs and turn-based battles: Bravely Default
Square Enix describes the series around a job system and Brave/Default actions, making it a strong fit when character builds and turn-based combat matter more than matching Octopath’s exact look. The recommendation is about the series’ mechanics; check the specific release and platform edition before buying. If you are considering Bravely Default II, confirm the product listing matches the system you own.
#1 Best Overall
- The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
- These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
- The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
- Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
- Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
For a different kind of HD-2D game: Live A Live
Live A Live is another community-suggested option for players drawn to HD-2D. Treat it as a stylistic neighbor, not a promise of Octopath’s party structure or combat. It is a good candidate when you want a related presentation but are open to a different RPG experience.
For tactical-grid combat: Triangle Strategy
Triangle Strategy is an adjacent choice if you like the HD-2D look and want battles built around tactical positioning. That is a meaningful change: Octopath uses party-based turn battles, while a tactical strategy game asks you to think about movement and the battlefield. The title appears in player recommendations, but the available official product details here do not establish its specific mechanics.

Quick comparison
| Game | Best fit if you want | What carries over | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake | A visual-style follow-up | HD-2D presentation | Do not assume Octopath’s story or battle systems carry over. |
| Bravely Default series | Flexible jobs and turn-based combat | Job system and turn-based play, as described by Square Enix | Its Brave/Default actions are a different battle mechanic from Octopath’s Break and Boost. |
| Live A Live | Another HD-2D option | Visual-style association | Not established as a match for Octopath’s party or combat structure. |
| Triangle Strategy | Tactical battles | An adjacent HD-2D-associated recommendation | Tactical-grid combat differs from Octopath’s party-based battles. |
How to choose without expecting a clone
- Pick your priority. If you want the look, start with Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake; if you want jobs and turn-based combat, start with Bravely Default; if you want tactical battles, look at Triangle Strategy.
- Decide how much change you want. A shared visual style does not guarantee similar characters, story structure, or combat. Choose based on the feature you value rather than the label “HD-2D” alone.
- Check the exact edition before purchase. Confirm platform and release in the store listing, since availability and editions can vary and change.
These are preference-based suggestions, not a ranked consensus. A community discussion asking what to play after Octopath Traveler surfaced Dragon Quest remakes, Triangle Strategy, Live A Live, and Bravely Default as candidate interests; it does not establish a universal best choice. Octopath Traveler I had sold over three million copies worldwide as of Square Enix’s August 2022 announcement, a dated figure for that game only—not a current sales count or a measure of which follow-up is best.
