If you want another fantasy RPG with memorable characters and choices that matter, start with Baldur’s Gate 3 or Dragon Age: Inquisition. The key difference is combat: Baldur’s Gate 3 is turn-based, while Dragon Age: Inquisition is an action-oriented, squad-led adventure. For a closer match to The Witcher 3’s real-time swordplay, consider the other picks below according to whether you value exploration, difficulty, or a grounded setting most.

Which games are most like The Witcher?

There is no single replacement for The Witcher. Its appeal can mean consequential quests, a fantasy world to roam, real-time combat, or a defined protagonist with a strong personal story. These games overlap with different parts of that experience, so the best choice depends on what you want to keep.

Game Best for What carries over Main difference
Baldur’s Gate 3 Story choices, party relationships, flexible quests Fantasy setting, consequential decisions, character-focused storytelling Tactical, turn-based combat using D&D 5e rules
Dragon Age: Inquisition Companions and a large fantasy adventure Difficult decisions, complex characters, action-RPG combat Squad-led structure and a different quest and combat flow
Dragon Age: Origins Older-school party fantasy A high-stakes story about a threat to the world Older game; check compatibility for your platform
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Freeform exploration and character creation Open fantasy world, monsters and discovery You create your own character rather than play an authored protagonist like Geralt
Kingdom Come: Deliverance Grounded, historical role-playing Story-driven open-world setting Historical realism instead of magic and monsters
Elden Ring Dark-fantasy exploration and challenging action A large, threatening world and build variety More emphasis on demanding combat and less on dialogue-led NPC engagement
Cyberpunk 2077 Another open-world RPG from CD PROJEKT RED Open-world role-playing by the same studio Science fiction, not fantasy

Baldur’s Gate 3: best for choices and party relationships

Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if the part of The Witcher you most want is a branching story shaped by your decisions. Larian describes a fantasy RPG in which choices affect the player’s story and legacy, and companions react to decisions. Its official feature page says, “Every choice you make drives your story forward, each decision leaving its mark on the world.” Larian’s official game page

The major adjustment is combat. Rather than real-time sword-and-sign fighting, battles are tactical and turn-based, using D&D 5e rules. If you enjoy planning party actions and weighing options during combat, that shift can suit the story emphasis. If you specifically want to control a lone swordsman in real time, this is a meaningful difference, not a minor detail.

Dragon Age: Inquisition: best for a broad fantasy action RPG

Dragon Age: Inquisition is the closest fit here for readers who want a broad fantasy adventure, companions, difficult decisions and action-oriented combat. BioWare describes it as “an expansive, story-driven, open-world game” with complex characters, challenging combat and difficult decisions. BioWare’s official game catalog

It is not a copy of The Witcher: the experience is squad-led, and its quests and combat have their own structure. But if you want a substantial fantasy journey where party members and choices matter alongside fighting, it belongs near the top of the list.

Its appeal is the party-focused fantasy conflict rather than a close match for Geralt’s combat or protagonist style. Because it is an older game, check current compatibility and availability for your platform before buying; those details vary by store and system.

Skyrim: best for roaming and making your own character

Pick The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim if you want to wander a fantasy world, discover places at your own pace and shape your own character. GamesRadar’s comparison highlights its freedom and exploration as a contrast to The Witcher. GamesRadar’s comparison of games like The Witcher 3

The trade-off is the role you inhabit. The Witcher centers on Geralt, an authored protagonist; Skyrim gives you a player-created character. That makes it a strong exploration alternative, but not the closest choice if you mainly want a tightly defined central character and personal narrative.

It may appeal if you want a grounded world and role-playing in a story-led open setting, but expect historical subject matter rather than supernatural monsters, magic or a fantasy bestiary.

Elden Ring: best for difficult dark-fantasy action

Choose Elden Ring if dark-fantasy exploration and demanding real-time action matter more to you than dialogue-heavy storytelling. GamesRadar’s comparison distinguishes its combat and exploration focus from The Witcher’s more involved NPC engagement. Bandai Namco presents it as a dark-fantasy action RPG. GamesRadar’s comparison of games like The Witcher 3 and Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring page

This is the pick for players who want to explore a dangerous world and test a build against tough fights. It is a weaker match if your priority is the sort of dialogue-led questing and NPC interaction associated with The Witcher.

Cyberpunk 2077: same studio, different genre

If you mainly want another open-world RPG from the studio behind The Witcher, consider Cyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as an open-world action-adventure role-playing game set in Night City. CD PROJEKT RED’s official Cyberpunk 2077 page

It is science fiction rather than fantasy, so it only fits if you are willing to trade swords, monsters and magic for a different setting.

  • Want an open-world story without fantasy magic? Try Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
