If you want another classic-style RPG, start with Sea of Stars; if the part you want most is a story that spans different eras, try LIVE A LIVE. Octopath Traveler II is a strong choice for a party of distinct protagonists and turn-based systems, but it is a broader classic-JRPG match rather than a time-travel substitute. Each game echoes a different part of Chrono Trigger.

Which game is the closest match for what you liked about Chrono Trigger?

If you want… Try… Why it fits
An era-spanning story with different protagonists LIVE A LIVE Its seven stories take place in seven time periods, with an eighth story unlocked after completing the first seven. It is an anthology of separate scenarios, not one continuous time-travel adventure like Chrono Trigger.
Modern classic-style combat and exploration Sea of Stars It pairs turn-based combat with timed inputs, exploration, and a presentation built around classic RPG conventions.
A larger ensemble cast and turn-based mechanics Octopath Traveler II Its eight travelers, linked stories, and Boost and Break combat systems make it a good genre neighbor, though not a time-travel pick.

These games are not interchangeable. Pick by the feature you want to revisit rather than expecting any one of them to recreate Chrono Trigger’s exact story or structure.

Sea of Stars: for classic-style turn-based play and exploration

PlayStation’s official description of Sea of Stars says it modernizes the classic RPG formula across combat, storytelling, exploration, and environmental interaction. The story follows two Children of the Solstice whose powers combine into Eclipse Magic.

Combat is turn-based, but timing gives you something active to do during attacks and defense: synchronized action-button presses can increase damage and reduce incoming damage. The game also features combo attacks, boosting, and a “locks” system. Outside battle, its world supports swimming, climbing, vaulting, jumping, sailing, cooking, and fishing. PlayStation also highlights movement without random encounters or battle transitions.

That structure makes it the strongest recommendation if what you want is an RPG that moves between eras. The distinction matters: the game presents separate stories with different leads and play styles, rather than a single party traveling together through time. Its creative connection to Chrono Trigger is also direct: Nintendo’s publisher-provided Switch listing credits Takashi Tokita as producer and identifies Chrono Trigger among his credits.

Octopath Traveler II: for a wider ensemble and tactical turn-based systems

Octopath Traveler II is worth considering if the appeal of classic JRPGs for you is a group of distinct heroes and turn-based battles, not time travel. TechRadar Gaming’s guide, dated 24 October 2025, describes its eight travelers, linked stories, Boost and Break mechanics, and day-and-night changes in towns.

Those features make it an adjacent recommendation, not the closest match to Chrono Trigger’s premise. Choose it for the ensemble and combat systems; choose LIVE A LIVE if separate stories across time periods are the priority.
