For YouTube gameplay with scenes, a webcam, or overlays, use an encoder such as Streamlabs or another tool that fits your computer and production needs. YouTube’s official guidance describes encoders as a common way to stream gameplay and overlays, but it does not establish one application as objectively best. Choose based on capture and scene workflow, YouTube connection, supported hardware and output settings, and the extras you actually need.
Do you need game streaming software?
Not always. YouTube also supports mobile, webcam, and direct console streaming. An encoder is the useful route when you want to combine gameplay with scenes, overlays, a microphone, or a camera. YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay, overlays, and equipment such as microphones and cameras. YouTube’s live-streaming overview explains the available paths.
Before choosing software, check that your channel is eligible: YouTube lists channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and a minimum age of 16 among its requirements. Requirements can change, so confirm them in YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
Which software should you choose?
There is no evidence here for a universal performance winner, easiest application, or comparative ranking. The official YouTube pages identify relevant tools and technical requirements, but do not provide head-to-head benchmarks. Make a short test stream with the software you are considering before relying on it for an event.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Streamlabs: a starting point for integrated production features
YouTube’s encoder help page lists Streamlabs for Windows, iOS, and Android, describes it as built on OBS, and notes features including alerts, shortcuts, tipping, face masks, and themes or overlays. That establishes it as a relevant option, not an endorsement or a guarantee that every feature is available in every version, plan, or platform. Check the current vendor documentation for compatibility and terms. See YouTube’s encoder help page.
Wirecast: consider the device-specific workflows
YouTube’s encoder help page lists Wirecast Go for iOS and describes a mobile production workflow; its streaming tips also cite Wirecast as encoding software. These mentions establish relevance, not a feature comparison or blanket recommendation. Confirm current device support and capabilities with the vendor. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

OBS and other encoders: verify the details you need
YouTube’s cited page describes Streamlabs as built on OBS, but that alone does not establish OBS’s current feature set, supported platforms, or setup details. For OBS or any other encoder, check its current official documentation for operating-system support, game capture, scenes, overlays, hardware encoding, and YouTube connection. Do not assume that features listed for one application apply to another.
Use these decision criteria
- Capture and scene workflow: Can it capture the game you play and let you assemble the needed scenes, overlays, and transitions comfortably?
- YouTube connection: Does it offer a YouTube preset, or can you enter the server URL and stream key? Does it support RTMPS?
- Production extras: Do you need alerts, shortcuts, themes, chat, or other integrated tools? Check whether the specific feature is available in your current version and plan.
- Hardware and output: Does your computer and encoder support the codec, resolution, and frame rate you want? YouTube’s requirements are a compatibility reference, not proof every application or computer supports every option.
- Cost and system demands: Verify current vendor pricing, system requirements, and plan limitations directly. No comparative prices, minimum hardware requirements, or CPU/GPU benchmarks are established here.
- Reliability workflow: Can you preview the stream and monitor audio, video, and connection health during a test?
Set up the encoder for YouTube
- Choose or create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Get the stream URL and stream key there. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Connect the encoder. Select its YouTube preset if available. Otherwise, enter the server URL and key supplied by Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when supported; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL encryption. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Match output settings to your target and your connection. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. Its recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the live table in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Set audio deliberately. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended advanced stereo settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Check the encoder’s audio meters and listen to the preview for clipping, muted sources, or game audio overpowering speech.
- Check upload headroom. The total stream bitrate must fit your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room; choose settings your connection can sustain rather than selecting the highest resolution by default.
Test before you go live
Use a short private or unlisted test to catch setup problems before an audience arrives. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, testing the stream, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. Its live-streaming tips include further operational checks.

- Inspect the Live Control Room preview for picture, motion, framing, and audio sync.
- Listen for clean speech and balanced game audio; check that no unwanted desktop or notification sounds are being broadcast.
- Confirm the upload connection has headroom at the chosen bitrate and watch YouTube’s stream health during the test.
- Check the watch page on the devices your audience is likely to use, including a phone.
- If you record a local archive, verify that the recording is being created and grows as expected.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Choose gameplay, music, overlays, and other material you have permission to use. A game being streamable does not automatically grant rights to its soundtrack, licensed tracks, or third-party assets. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming rules before a broadcast, and do not treat a successful test as proof that all content is cleared. Reused or repetitive content can also raise separate monetization-policy questions; check YouTube’s current monetization rules if earning revenue is part of your plan.
