Recommended Free Tools
For a useful scan of nearby Wi-Fi networks, start with WiFi Analyzer by VREM on Android, a Microsoft Store analyzer on Windows, or Wireless Diagnostics on macOS. iPhone and iPad are more restricted: Apple’s AirPort Utility may provide a basic scan after you enable its Wi-Fi Scanner setting. These tools reveal likely Wi-Fi channel congestion—not every kind of radio interference, and not necessarily the cause of a slow connection.
Which free Wi-Fi analyzer should you use?
| Platform | Good place to start | What it can show | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | WiFi Analyzer (open-source) by VREM | Nearby access points, channel and signal graphs, and channel ratings | Band visibility depends on device and software support; Android may throttle scans. Google Play listing |
| Windows | A Wi-Fi network analyzer from Microsoft Store | A network graph for comparing access points, signal strength, and channel overlap | Microsoft recommends this approach but does not name one particular analyzer. Microsoft’s guidance |
| macOS | Wireless Diagnostics’ Scan window | Reportedly, nearby networks, channels, signals, noise, and channel suggestions | This workflow is described by a secondary guide; confirm it on your macOS version. Macworld guide |
| iPhone or iPad | Apple AirPort Utility’s Wi-Fi Scanner | A basic list of nearby networks, channels, and received signal levels | Access is limited compared with Android, and the setting and workflow may vary by iOS release. ChannelPro guide and TheLeaker guide |
For Windows, NetSpot is another option with a free version and Windows support, but its vendor also advertises paid capabilities. Check the current edition’s feature limits before relying on a specific workflow. NetSpot’s product page

Android: VREM WiFi Analyzer
VREM’s open-source WiFi Analyzer is a practical first choice if you want to see how nearby access points are distributed across channels. Its Google Play listing describes the app as free and ad-free, with nearby access point detection, channel and signal-strength graphs, and channel ratings. It lists 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz support subject to the phone’s hardware and software capability. The listing also says it collects no personal information.
Android can throttle Wi-Fi scans, so the display may not update continuously. Give it time to refresh rather than assuming a slow-changing graph means the app is broken. Another Android option is olgor.com’s WiFi Analyzer, whose Play listing describes channel recommendations, nearby access point overlap, signal history, and 2.4/5/6 GHz analysis. Those are developer-provided claims; review the current listing for ads and in-app purchases before treating it as fully free. Google Play listing

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Windows: use a network graph
Microsoft’s guidance is to install a Wi-Fi network analyzer from Microsoft Store and inspect its network graph. The useful feature is not a particular app name but a view that lets you compare nearby access points, their channels, and relative signal strength before changing router settings. NetSpot is a separate free-version option, but confirm what its current free edition includes before choosing it for a particular task.
macOS: try Wireless Diagnostics
A September 2026 Macworld guide describes a Scan window in macOS Wireless Diagnostics that lists nearby networks, channels, signal levels, and noise, and offers channel suggestions. Because the detailed workflow is not established here by Apple documentation, treat it as a practical option to verify on your macOS release rather than assuming every version has identical menus or output.

iPhone and iPad: expect a basic scan, not an Android-style analyzer
iOS gives third-party apps less access to nearby Wi-Fi scanning than Android. Secondary guides describe using Apple’s AirPort Utility: enable Wi-Fi Scanner in iOS Settings, then use the app’s scanner to view nearby networks, channels, and received signal levels. The exact Settings path and available behavior can change with iOS, so check the current app and Settings interface on your device.
How to read a Wi-Fi channel graph
A typical analyzer shows access points nearby, the channels they use, and their relative signal strength. Networks that overlap on the same or adjacent channel can indicate likely congestion. A stronger nearby network is generally more relevant to your local conditions than a faint one, but the graph is evidence of possible Wi-Fi crowding—not proof that a neighbor’s network is responsible for every disconnection or slow speed.

- Look at overlap, not just the number of networks. Channel width and the channels occupied by nearby access points matter; simply selecting the channel with the fewest network names can be misleading.
- Consider signal strength. A graph that includes relative signal levels helps distinguish strong nearby networks from weak ones.
- Compare the band you actually use. Your device, router, and app support determine whether 2.4, 5, or 6 GHz networks are visible.
Choose a less crowded router channel carefully
Microsoft’s home-network guidance recommends looking at access-point counts, signal strength, and overlap. For 2.4 GHz, it suggests considering channels 1, 6, or 11. For 5 GHz, it recommends a channel with fewer access points for the observed signal strength, noting that overlap is less of an issue there. These are practical recommendations, not universal channel rules: available channels and regulatory requirements vary by country, so use the options your router offers for your region. Microsoft: Wi-Fi and your home layout
- Scan from the place where you experience the problem, and check the band your device is using.
- Compare channel overlap and signal strength among nearby access points; do not choose by network count alone.
- In your router’s settings, select a channel that is available in your region and appears less affected by strong overlapping networks. Some routers offer an Auto setting, but Microsoft notes that how well it works varies.
- Reconnect and check whether the problem improves. If not, return to the previous setting or try another suitable channel; the scan is a guide, not a guarantee.
When a channel change will not solve the problem
Changing channels addresses possible Wi-Fi congestion; it does not improve weak coverage. Microsoft also recommends checking signal strength, reducing obstacles, placing the access point centrally and higher where practical, and considering an extender when moving the router or client is not possible. An extender is a coverage remedy, not a way to diagnose channel interference. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance

What Wi-Fi analyzer apps cannot detect
Most apps called Wi-Fi or “spectrum” analyzers scan Wi-Fi networks and visualize channel use; they are not full radio-frequency spectrum survey tools. They generally cannot identify non-Wi-Fi sources such as microwaves, wireless cameras, or Bluetooth equipment. If problems persist despite reasonable channel and coverage checks, a dedicated spectrum-analysis device or professional survey may be needed to investigate other radio sources. ChannelPro’s overview
