For a genuinely free setup, use OBS Studio on a computer you can leave running. OBS is free and open source, and YouTube Live accepts its feed through a server URL and stream key. The trade-off is that your computer and internet connection must stay available. If you do not want to run a computer at home, a cloud service is an alternative, but it is not necessarily free.

Best ways to keep a YouTube Live stream running 24/7

  1. OBS Studio on your own computer: The best starting point when avoiding a streaming-service subscription matters most. OBS sends video directly from your computer to YouTube; you control the source video and avoid encoder software fees, but must maintain the computer and connection.
  2. Cloud-hosted streaming: YouTube lists Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams. A provider-managed encoder avoids leaving your own computer on, but check the provider’s current price, plan limits, recovery behavior, and archive handling before choosing it; YouTube’s listing does not establish those details.

For a YouTube-only cloud option, StreamNeo is #1: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.

Check YouTube Live eligibility first

Before preparing a long broadcast, confirm the channel is eligible. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its general guidance gives 16 as the minimum age to livestream. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder guidance. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips and Get started with live streaming for current requirements.

Set up a free local stream with OBS

OBS Project describes OBS as free, open-source software and says it sends the stream directly from your computer to the destination. The exact OBS controls for looping one source or building a playlist can vary by version, so check the current OBS interface rather than relying on outdated menu instructions. The essential connection and broadcast sequence is:

  1. Prepare the video source. Choose video you have the right to broadcast. For one repeating recording, configure the current OBS media source to loop; for a sequence, arrange the sources or playlist in the order you want and verify how playback advances in your installed OBS version.
  2. Create or schedule a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event. YouTube’s guide is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private and reset it using YouTube’s settings if it is exposed. Details are in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm that the feed appears correctly in Live Control Room. For scheduled streams, YouTube says you must also go live in Live Control Room. Check that the intended video and audio are present before the audience arrives.
  5. Monitor the event. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video during a live event. Keep the computer awake, OBS running, and the internet connection stable for as long as the broadcast is meant to continue.

Test before leaving a stream unattended

Run a short test live stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview, audio, and playback on the intended watch page and devices. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event; these are operational recommendations, not universal requirements. Its guidance is at YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

For a long-running local broadcast, test what happens when the source video ends, the connection drops, or OBS closes. A loop setting or playlist is only useful if playback continues as intended after the transition. Your local setup depends on the machine and network remaining available; a power interruption, sleep setting, application crash, or internet outage can stop the feed.

  • 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution

Plan for playback controls and the archive

YouTube’s DVR setting allows viewers to pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering, and that very low latency matters less when a stream is not interactive. Choose settings according to whether viewers need near-real-time interaction or smoother playback; consult YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Do not assume an around-the-clock broadcast will become one permanent replay. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous stream that exceeds that threshold should not be treated as guaranteed to produce one automatically archived replay; decide how you will handle the live event and any archive, and verify the current behavior in YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.

Respect copyright and YouTube rules

Looping prerecorded material does not change its rights status. Broadcast only video and audio you have permission to use, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube may restrict or remove content, and stream settings include rights-management controls. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and stream settings before going live.

Cost and maintenance trade-offs

Approach Software or service cost Where the encoder runs Main trade-off
OBS Studio OBS is free; electricity, internet, and hardware may still cost money. Your computer sends the feed directly to YouTube. No encoder subscription, but you maintain the machine and connection.
Cloud-hosted service Check the provider’s current price and limits. Provider-managed servers. Avoids keeping a local computer on, but adds a third party and service terms to evaluate.

Compare not just price, but who maintains the running encoder, how you select and sequence videos, what happens after interruptions, and how long streams and archives are handled. YouTube’s Upstream listing does not establish provider pricing or reliability.
