The simplest free way to keep a YouTube gaming stream running is OBS Studio on a gaming PC you already own. OBS is free and open source, and YouTube says encoder-based streaming is commonly used for gaming. The trade-off is that your PC, power, internet connection and game must keep working; free software does not make a local setup uninterrupted.
There is also a difference between staying live and keeping a complete replay: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. If you need a replay, plan shorter sessions and make a local recording.
Which free 24/7 gaming-stream setup should you choose?
If you already have a gaming PC, use OBS Studio to encode the gameplay and send it to YouTube. It avoids a streaming-software subscription and cloud-hosting bill, but your own hardware and connection have to remain available. It is the strongest free fit when you can accept occasional downtime and monitor the stream.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Route | Upfront software cost | What must stay running | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS on an existing gaming PC | Free software | Gaming PC, encoder and internet connection | Creators who already play on a PC | Depends on local power, connectivity and hardware |
| YouTube or another encoder path | YouTube’s service is used; encoder costs vary | The selected device and connection | Simpler or alternate workflows | Not every path is designed for continuous gameplay; paid encoders may add cost |
| Cloud-hosted encoder or gaming setup | Whether a suitable option is free is not established | Provider infrastructure and a way to supply game video | Creators who need their home PC off | Check current price, gaming capability, uptime terms and stream limits before relying on it |
For this gaming use case, a cloud service must also be able to receive or run the gameplay source. A service that loops uploaded videos is not automatically a cloud gaming PC or a replacement for a live gameplay capture setup.

Set up OBS to stream gameplay to YouTube
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current help guidance says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the official OBS Project Help Portal. OBS describes its software as free and open source; a third-party download mirror is not necessary.
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the stream, then copy the server URL and stream key into OBS. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to connect to your channel. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Choose a reliable video and audio configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion. Choose resolution and encoding settings your PC can sustain while the game is running; there is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every computer and connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance to match the output to your connection and stream quality.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Complete YouTube’s Go Live action if prompted. Do not assume the stream is public and live until the control room confirms it.
- Prepare the game and scene for unattended periods. Check that the game can keep running and that the scene will not expose private information, unwanted content or an unattended dialog. Decide who will monitor the broadcast and how you will respond to a game crash, PC restart, power cut or internet failure. The local OBS workflow does not guarantee automatic recovery.
- Record locally if the footage matters. Start a local recording and periodically verify that the archive file is growing. YouTube also recommends monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast; see its live-streaming tips.
Plan for the difference between a live stream and its replay
A 24/7 broadcast does not mean YouTube will preserve a complete 24-hour video afterward. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. As YouTube Help puts it, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Read YouTube’s archive guidance.
YouTube also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. That affects viewers trying to rewind during the broadcast; it is separate from whether a complete archive is saved. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

- NEXT-GEN BLACKWELL ARCHITECTURE — The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 is powered by NVIDIA's cutting-edge Blackwell GPU architecture, delivering a massive generational leap in rasterization and ray tracing performance so you can experience your games the way they were meant to be played.
- Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. *MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
- Cool While Gaming: In conjunction with an ARGB fan Air Cooler, the Codex R2 features four system cooling fans; three in the front and one in the rear to pull in cool air and push heat out of the PC.
- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
- If the live channel matters more than one continuous replay: you can run a longer broadcast, while accepting the archive and rewind limitations.
- If you need a replay: divide the operation into sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup. Shorter sessions improve the chance of an archive, but do not replace checking YouTube’s status or your local file.
Keep the free local setup reliable
“Free” here means no charge for OBS software when using a PC you already own. It does not remove the ongoing needs for electricity, internet service, a working gaming PC or operator attention. A crash, outage or game failure can end the stream, and the researched YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish automated recovery for this local setup.
- Test the full game-and-stream workload before leaving it unattended; encoding while gaming can strain the same PC.
- Check stream health and audio/video output during operation, not just the initial preview.
- Keep the stream key private and revoke or replace it if it is exposed.
- Use a local recording when the footage must survive a failed archive or interrupted broadcast.
- Do not treat a free cloud-hosting tier as available or suitable unless you have verified its current price, gaming capability, limits and recovery terms.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded gameplay recordings rather than live gameplay captured from a running game, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not a live camera or active game session.
