The best free VTuber software depends on your avatar format: use VTube Studio to animate a Live2D Cubism model, or create a 3D avatar in VRoid Studio and pair it with a VRM-compatible tracker such as VSeeFace. Use OBS Studio to assemble your avatar, game, camera, and audio into a live broadcast. These tools do different jobs, so there is no single app that replaces the whole workflow.

VTube Studio: tracking a Live2D model
VTube Studio uses a webcam or compatible smartphone to track your expressions and animate a Live2D Cubism model. It can be used with OBS as the avatar-tracking layer. It does not load VRM or VRoid models, so choose a VRM-compatible tracker for a 3D avatar instead. See the VTube Studio requirements documentation for compatibility and tracking guidance.
VTube Studio is available as a free demo, but free and PRO features differ. Its FAQ describes PRO features including longer-than-five-minute phone-to-PC streaming and removing the app logo. Because platform availability and feature limits can change, check the current official FAQ and Steam listing before deciding whether the free tier covers your setup.

VRoid Studio: making a 3D avatar
VRoid Studio is a free tool for creating and customizing 3D characters, including editing textures. Its output is a VRM model; use a tracking application that accepts VRM, such as VSeeFace, to animate it for a stream. The software being free does not automatically grant rights to every downloaded asset, clothing item, prop, or export. Check the terms attached to each third-party asset you use. OBS Studio: building and broadcasting the stream
OBS Studio is the scene, capture, audio-mixing, recording, and streaming application in this workflow. Add the tracker output as a source, then combine it with sources such as a game window, images, text, webcam, or capture device. OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is free and open source under GPLv2, with no watermark or feature limitations according to its official help portal and homepage.

Set up a free VTuber streaming workflow
- Identify the model format. Use VTube Studio for a Live2D Cubism model. For a 3D VRM model, use a VRM-compatible tracker. Do not try to load a VRoid/VRM model into VTube Studio.
- Create or prepare the avatar. Make a 3D character in VRoid Studio if needed, or prepare your existing Live2D model for its compatible tracker. Confirm that you have permission to use any model and third-party assets in your stream.
- Choose tracking hardware. VTube Studio supports webcam and smartphone tracking. Its documentation says webcam eye and blink tracking generally works best at 1280×720 or above; it also describes 15–30 FPS as sufficient for good tracking. A webcam purchase is optional if you can use compatible phone tracking.
- Install and configure the tracker. Load the model in the app that supports its format, select your tracking device, and check that facial movement appears as expected before opening OBS. For VRM, verify that the tracker supports both your operating system and model.
- Install OBS Studio and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. The wizard helps select starting settings for your system and broadcast needs. Add your avatar output and other sources to a scene, then arrange and size them for your layout.
- Set up audio and broadcast output. In OBS, check the microphone or other audio input, then configure the streaming destination and stream key using the platform’s current instructions. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Test before going live. Check that the avatar tracks, sources are visible, audio levels are usable, and the intended scene is selected. Make a short recording or private test stream to catch layout, sync, or device issues before a public broadcast.
For OBS’s current setup sequence and source guidance, follow its Quick Start Guide. Exact encoder and output settings depend on your computer, connection, and destination platform; use that platform’s current streaming requirements rather than assuming one bitrate or resolution fits every setup.
Hardware and cost: what “free” does and does not mean
- OBS Studio: the application is free to use, with no watermark or feature restrictions stated by its official help portal.
- VRoid Studio: the application is free; separate asset licenses and usage terms still apply.
- VTube Studio: free access has feature limits, and some features require PRO. Check its current platform listing and FAQ for the applicable limits and pricing.
- Tracking device: VTube Studio can use a phone or webcam. Its webcam guidance is a recommendation for tracking quality, not a requirement to buy a particular model.
- Other possible costs: a model, computer, phone, capture device, paid app feature, or licensed third-party asset may add costs depending on the setup.
