OBS Studio is the clearest free starting point if you need desktop software to send a live stream to YouTube. YouTube also lists Streamlabs and PRISM Live Studio as no-charge options. None makes a local stream self-sustaining: for 24/7 operation, your computer, power, internet connection, media and stream session must keep working.
If you want prerecorded videos to run continuously without leaving a computer on at home, a cloud service is a different kind of alternative. What to use instead of VLC for a 24/7 YouTube stream
VLC can play media files, but YouTube needs a live broadcast from an encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. These are software choices, not guarantees of uninterrupted broadcasting. There is no controlled endurance comparison here that proves one desktop encoder is the most reliable for continuous use.

Choose based on what you are streaming
Prerecorded video or a playlist
A desktop encoder can send prerecorded media as a live stream, but the computer running it must stay powered and connected. Check that your chosen workflow can repeat the media as intended and that it resumes after an interruption. If the goal is unattended playback without a home computer, compare cloud playout services instead; YouTube lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. These are services, not established free desktop replacements. Check their current availability and plans before choosing one.
Camera, gameplay or guests
For a live camera, gameplay capture or a production with guests, use desktop streaming software such as OBS, Streamlabs or PRISM, or another encoder suited to the production. Set up a YouTube encoder
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming setup and complete any account verification YouTube requests. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become enabled, so do not leave setup until the moment you plan to go live.
- Create or open a stream in YouTube Studio. Select the encoder workflow, then locate the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. The exact screen can vary with the stream setup; follow the labels shown in Studio.
- Configure your encoder. In OBS, Streamlabs or PRISM, choose the YouTube service or custom server flow as offered, then enter or connect the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Add the source. For prerecorded playback, add the media or playlist source and verify that it plays and repeats as intended. For a live production, add the camera, capture or other sources you need.
- Check the preview and stream status. Confirm YouTube receives a signal and that audio and video are correct before publishing. Start the stream in the encoder and complete any required go-live step in Studio.
- Monitor the session. For local streaming, keep the computer awake, powered and connected; check both the encoder and YouTube Studio periodically. Plan how you will restart the application or system if it fails.
Keep a local stream running in India
A free encoder removes the software fee, not the operating cost or failure points. A 24/7 local setup occupies a computer and relies on continuous electricity, internet service and a working source file or production. Consider these checks before committing to a continuous stream:
- Power: Prevent sleep and automatic shutdown while streaming. A UPS can help with brief outages, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream during a longer power failure.
- Internet: Confirm that your connection sustains the required upload and that your plan’s fair-use limit allows continuous streaming. A momentary reconnection may be handled by an encoder, but a connection problem that persists will interrupt the broadcast.
- Data use: StreamNeo’s 2026 India guide search-result excerpt estimates about 2 GB per hour and roughly 1.4 TB in 30 days at 4.5 Mbps. Those are attributed estimates from the excerpt, not independently verified measurements; actual use depends on bitrate and operating conditions.
- Recovery: Reconnection cannot fix a frozen operating system, restore power, or reopen an application that someone closed. Arrange monitoring and a way to restart the stream if unattended operation matters.
- Content rights and channel policies: Make sure you have rights to every video, song and other material in the stream. A live format does not make copyrighted content permissible. Review YouTube’s current rules for copyright, live streaming and monetization; permission to broadcast does not by itself guarantee monetization eligibility.
How YouTube archiving affects long broadcasts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer broadcast will receive the same automatic archive treatment. If you need a complete recording of a stream that may run 12 hours or longer, plan a separate recording and verify that it is being saved.

Common problems and practical fixes
- YouTube does not show an incoming signal: Check that live streaming is enabled, the selected server URL is correct and the current stream key is entered in the encoder. If you reset a key, replace the old one everywhere it is used.
- The stream stops when you leave the computer: Check power and sleep settings. Local encoding requires the computer and network to remain available; closing the encoder ends that path to YouTube.
- A network drop interrupts the broadcast: Check whether the encoder reconnects and whether Studio shows a new incoming signal. If the connection remains unavailable, fix the network and restart the broadcast as needed; encoder software cannot repair a home internet outage.
- The video or playlist does not repeat: Check the source and repeat or playlist settings in the encoder, then verify the loop in preview before going live. Exact controls differ by software.
- The computer or app freezes: An encoder cannot restart a frozen operating system or recover from a power failure on its own. Restart the computer and encoder, then reconnect through Studio; use a cloud service if avoiding home-PC dependency is the priority.
- A long stream is missing from archives: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Keep a separate recording workflow for longer sessions.
Cost and choice
OBS, Streamlabs Desktop and PRISM Live Studio have no-charge entry points according to their cited sources, but local streaming still uses your own power, internet and equipment. Streamlabs’ premium features are not all included in its free download. Cloud services shift the work away from your local computer but introduce a service fee and provider dependency; verify current plans and availability for India rather than assuming a service is free or locally priced.
Choose OBS for a straightforward free desktop starting point, Streamlabs or PRISM if their workflow fits your production better, and a cloud service if your central requirement is unattended prerecorded playback without keeping a PC running. No cited evidence establishes a 24/7 reliability winner among the desktop applications.
