For a free local setup, use OBS Studio: its VLC Video source rotates multiple video files in a fixed order or shuffle, while its Media Source can loop one file. You still schedule the live event separately in YouTube Studio. Here, “schedule” can mean either arranging the videos to play or setting when a YouTube livestream event is promoted; the tools and steps differ.

OBS is the strongest documented free option for local playlist playback in this workflow. OBS describes VLC Video as a way to create a playlist of items, unlike Media Source. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed separately; OBS specifies a matching 64-bit VLC installation when using 64-bit OBS. OBS documents these sources for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Media Sources documentation (page dated January 11, 2022).
Set up a rotating playlist in OBS
Install OBS and VLC
- Install OBS Studio for your operating system.
- Install VLC separately. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the matching 64-bit VLC version.
- Open OBS and select or create the scene that will carry the prerecorded video.
Add multiple videos with VLC Video
- In the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video. If that source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
- Give the source a name and add the video files in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart from the first item when the final item finishes. It is enabled by default.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled for a fixed sequence. Enable it for randomized rotation; keep Loop Playlist enabled if it should continue cycling.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene and that its video fits the canvas as intended. Test playback before scheduling the broadcast.
VLC Video’s documented visibility behavior is to stop playback when the source is hidden and restart when it becomes visible. If you switch scenes, do not assume that playback will continue seamlessly while the source is hidden. OBS’s settings and supported formats can change; the Media Sources page lists common video types such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, and audio types such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. If a file does not play, check the current OBS documentation and try a supported format.

- In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source.
- Select the local video file.
- Enable Loop; it is off by default.
- Check the preview and test that the file restarts when it reaches the end.
Schedule the YouTube live event separately
OBS plays and encodes the local media; YouTube Studio creates and schedules the live event. A YouTube playlist in Studio organizes videos on YouTube, while an OBS VLC Video playlist plays local files into the encoder feed. They are not interchangeable. - Make sure your channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time live enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements for current details.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, go to Manage, and choose the option to schedule a stream. Reuse prior settings or create a new event.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a password; do not share or publish it.
- At the scheduled time, start streaming from OBS and confirm the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Then start or go live with the scheduled event as prompted by YouTube.
Scheduling the event promotes an upcoming stream; it does not play local files or start the encoder by itself. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that an indefinite 24/7 stream will be archived in full. These workflow details are in YouTube’s encoder and scheduling instructions.
Check rights and content rules before going live
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to every video, music track, and other element in the broadcast. A playlist loop does not change those obligations. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance also describes eligibility and content-policy requirements; review YouTube’s live-streaming guidance before you schedule. Copyright and reused-content questions can depend on the material and context, so do not assume that crediting an owner or using a short excerpt automatically grants permission.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video does not appear in OBS: install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- A playlist stops after one pass: check that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The files play in a different order: disable Shuffle Playlist and review the item order in the source.
- Playback restarts after a scene change: VLC Video stops when hidden and restarts when visible by default. Keep the source visible in the active scene or plan for the restart.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: confirm that OBS has the correct stream URL and key for the scheduled event, and that streaming has been started in OBS.
- You cannot go live yet: check channel verification, recent restrictions, age eligibility, and whether first-time enablement has completed.
- A media file will not play: check the file type against OBS’s current documentation and try a supported format.
Cost and practical trade-offs
OBS and VLC provide a no-hosting-cost local workflow, but your computer, network connection, and encoder must remain available while the stream runs. Cloud hosting removes the need to keep that local setup running; compare each provider’s current storage, playlist controls, scheduling, recovery behavior, and price before choosing. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory names Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video, but listing is not a comparative endorsement or confirmation of current commercial terms.
