OBS Studio is the best free starting point for looping sermons on a 24/7 YouTube stream. Use its Media Source with Loop enabled for one recording, or its VLC Video source for an ordered playlist of several recordings. Both run on your computer, so the computer, power, and internet connection must stay available while streaming.

OBS is free for any use under GPLv2, with no watermark or usage limitation, according to the OBS Project Help Portal. YouTube also lists OBS as free software for recording and live streaming. If your priority is the simplest documented way to repeat sermon files at no software cost, start with OBS.
Set up OBS to loop a sermon
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and have the sermon recording ready. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- For a multi-file playlist, install VLC as well. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Make sure your channel is enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the scheduled start time.
- Confirm that your church has the necessary rights to the sermon recording and all included music, images, and other third-party material.
Loop one recording
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Select the sermon file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop so the file starts again after it reaches the end.
- Check the OBS preview and listen through the beginning and end of the file to confirm it plays as intended.
Rotate multiple recordings
- Install VLC before opening OBS. If OBS is already open, restart it after installing VLC so the source is available.
- Add a VLC Video source to your scene.
- Add the sermon recordings in the order you want them played, and check the source’s playlist-loop setting. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default.
- Test every item and transition in the playlist before sending the stream live. Keep backup media available in case a file fails to play.
OBS documents these source controls in its Media Sources guide. For a basic starting configuration, OBS suggests using the Auto Configuration Wizard. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the resolution and network conditions you plan to use rather than relying on fixed bitrate figures.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for the broadcast into the corresponding encoder fields in OBS.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before treating the broadcast as live and ready for viewers.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection flow. If the channel has not streamed before, allow time for YouTube’s activation process, which may take up to 24 hours.

Keep a local 24/7 stream available
With OBS, your computer is the encoder. It must remain powered on, connected to the internet, and running OBS for the stream to continue. The cited Looping Stream workflow guide, updated June 12, 2026, recommends preventing sleep and automatic restarts during the broadcast, monitoring the first full playlist cycle, checking stream health, and keeping backup media. These are practical workflow precautions, not a guarantee that the stream will never fail.
- Test that every file plays, including the last-to-first transition in a looping playlist.
- Make sure the computer will not sleep or restart for updates during the broadcast.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS output, especially during initial setup.
- Have a recovery plan for a power outage, internet interruption, OBS crash, or YouTube disconnect.
Copyright and YouTube archives
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. YouTube also says that a license alone may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review rights for the sermon, music, images, and other embedded works; church use does not automatically clear third-party rights. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will become one complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish that a longer stream will be fully archived. If you need a copy of the full service or playlist, keep your own source recordings.

- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC and restart OBS. Match the VLC architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- A sermon does not restart: Check that the Media Source’s Loop property is enabled. For multiple files, check the VLC Video playlist and its loop setting.
- YouTube receives no feed: Confirm the stream URL and key in OBS, then check that streaming has been started in OBS and review the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- The stream stops overnight: Check for computer sleep, a restart, lost power or internet, or an OBS failure. A local setup depends on all of those remaining available.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Review the Live Control Room notice and the channel’s rights to any matched third-party material. Licensed content may still require the rights holder to allowlist the channel through Content ID.
