For a big group or a couch session, start with Brawlhalla: it supports up to eight local or online players and cross-play across its listed platforms. For two friends who want to cooperate in a traditional tag-team fighter, try 2XKO. If you want to get into a match quickly in a browser, Tough Love Arena has a free browser version. The right choice comes down to group size, where everyone will play, and whether you want a party-style brawler or a more conventional fighting game.
Which free fighting game should you play with friends?
| Game | Best fit | What the published details confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Brawlhalla | Groups, local multiplayer, and cross-platform play | Up to eight local or online players; cross-play across PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. Blue Mammoth Games’ official site describes it as free to play. |
| 2XKO | Two friends who want a cooperative, 2v2 tag-team fighter | Free-to-play format where one player can control both champions or two friends can team up; listed for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Riot’s official page describes its team and ranked play. |
| Tough Love Arena | Quick browser matches and a beginner-oriented fighter | Free browser game with six characters, simple inputs, rollback netcode, browser crossplay, and controller and mobile support, according to its Steam listing. |
These are different kinds of fighting games, not interchangeable versions of the same experience. Brawlhalla is a platform fighter built for chaotic free-for-alls as well as other modes; 2XKO focuses on paired champions and team assists; Tough Love Arena is a smaller, more conventional fighter you can launch in a browser.
Brawlhalla: best for a group or couch play
Brawlhalla is the clearest pick when several friends want to play together. Blue Mammoth Games says it supports up to eight players locally or online, and confirms cross-play across PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. Its Epic Games Store listing also describes local and online competition, private rooms, casual free-for-alls, and ranked matches.

Players battle on platforms and try to knock opponents out of the arena, making it a natural fit for a mixed-skill group or a local gathering. The official site advertises more than 50 playable Legends; that is the developer’s current marketing count, not an independent measure.

The base game is free, but the Epic listing notes in-app purchases. For a local session, a controller may be convenient, but the cited pages do not establish a particular gamepad model or universal compatibility. Check support for your device before buying an accessory.
2XKO: best for two friends who want to team up
2XKO is a free-to-play 2v2 tag-team fighter. One person can control both champions, or two friends can form a duo, with team tag and assist mechanics at the center of play. Riot’s official page also lists ranked matches and availability on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

Pick it when you want to coordinate with a friend instead of simply fighting against them. The cited Riot page confirms the platforms and duo format, but does not explicitly confirm cross-play. If you and your friend use different platforms, check the current lobby and platform details before planning a match rather than assuming cross-platform play will work.

The browser version and Steam edition are not the same offer: the Steam edition is paid in at least some regions and includes extras such as offline play and event skins. The listing’s mention of rollback netcode applies to Tough Love Arena; it is not a basis for ranking its online play above or below the other games.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by group size, platform, and fighting style
- Playing locally or with a larger group? Brawlhalla is the strongest fit because its official site specifies up to eight local or online players.
- Want to play as a team with one friend? Choose 2XKO for its 2v2 tag format and duo option.
- Want to start in a browser? Try Tough Love Arena’s free browser version; its listing also calls out simple inputs and mobile support.
- Using different platforms? Brawlhalla’s official site expressly confirms cross-play for its listed platforms. The cited 2XKO page does not verify cross-play, while Tough Love Arena’s listing specifies browser crossplay.
- Want a traditional fighter rather than a party brawler? 2XKO and Tough Love Arena are closer format matches; Brawlhalla is a platform fighter.
Before organizing a session, confirm the game’s current multiplayer setup on your platform. The cited sources do not establish whether online console subscriptions, accounts, or separate devices are required in every region and setup. A controller is optional rather than a universal requirement; Tough Love Arena specifically lists controller support, while compatibility for any particular gamepad should be checked against the platform you use.
