OBS Studio is the best starting point if you want a free graphical setup; Liquidsoap with FFmpeg is a stronger fit for a scripted, playlist-driven stream. Neither guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation: the Linux host, network, encoder settings, process supervision and recovery plan all matter. For a cloud-hosted option that does not require a Linux computer to stay on, StreamNeo is an alternative described below.

Which software should you choose?

OBS is free for commercial use without watermarks or use restrictions, according to the OBS Project’s official help portal. Choose it if you prefer configuring scenes visually. Choose Liquidsoap if you want playlist logic and scripted operation rather than a graphical workspace. Both are free-software approaches, but neither source establishes indefinite uptime on a particular Linux machine.

Run a playlist with OBS Studio

OBS is a practical first choice when you want to assemble a music stream and its visual in a desktop interface. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard can set most basic settings, but the right output configuration depends on the machine, connection and current YouTube Studio requirements.

  1. Prepare the channel and content. Confirm that YouTube Studio lets your channel create a live stream, and prepare music and visuals you have the rights to use. YouTube may interrupt streams containing third-party material; see the copyright section below.
  2. Install OBS Studio for your Linux distribution. Use the OBS Project’s current installation and help guidance at obsproject.com/help. The available package and installation steps depend on your distribution.
  3. Configure the stream destination. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube or the available YouTube RTMP service, then connect the account or enter the server and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password; anyone with it may be able to send video to your channel.
  4. Build the scene. Add a media source or playlist for the recordings, and add an image or other visual source if the stream needs a static picture. Check that the playlist advances as intended and that the audio is audible before going live.
  5. Set and verify output settings. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then verify resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate and keyframe interval against current YouTube guidance and the capacity of your Linux host and upload connection. No single bitrate or resolution is correct for every machine, network and stream; the OBS help portal links to streaming and x264 guidance.
  6. Start the stream and monitor it. Keep OBS and the desktop session running. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and OBS’s status; a successful initial connection does not prove the setup will recover from a later network or process failure.

Build a playlist stream with Liquidsoap and FFmpeg

Liquidsoap’s official book documents a useful pattern: a playlist from a music directory, a still image as the video source, FFmpeg encoding, and output to YouTube over RTMP. The book’s example reads the YouTube key from a separate file rather than embedding it in the script. It uses H.264 video and MP3 audio, but explicitly presents its encoding values as a starting point that needs tuning.

  1. Create and check the music playlist source. Point Liquidsoap at the directory or playlist containing the recordings you intend to play, and confirm its playlist logic behaves as expected.
  2. Prepare a still image for the video source. The documented pattern uses an image as the visual while the playlist supplies the audio. Confirm that your image is suitable for the channel and that you have permission to use it.
  3. Store the stream key separately. Retrieve the key in YouTube Studio and place it in a protected file that the streaming process can read. Do not put the key in a publicly shared script or repository.
  4. Combine the sources and configure FFmpeg encoding. Follow the current Liquidsoap book’s YouTube example to mux the still image with the radio audio and encode the combined source. Its sample uses H.264 video and MP3 audio; tune the settings for your quality target, machine and connection rather than assuming the example values fit your setup.
  5. Send the output to YouTube over RTMP. Configure the documented YouTube RTMP destination and use the protected key file. Start the process and confirm that YouTube Studio receives the stream and reports healthy playback.
  6. Supervise and recover the process. For unattended operation, arrange a Linux service or other process supervisor to restart a failed process, and decide how you will detect a failed connection or invalid stream. Liquidsoap’s example establishes the encoding and output pattern, not a complete 24/7 monitoring or recovery system.

See the Liquidsoap book’s YouTube Live Streaming example for its documented workflow and code. Adapt it to your installed versions and system rather than treating it as a copy-and-paste uptime guarantee.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the playlist to continue without a Linux PC or home connection running, StreamNeo is the #1 cloud option here: it keeps an uploaded YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.

Choose settings and uptime safeguards deliberately

A 24/7 stream is a system, not just an encoder setting. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Liquidsoap’s sample encoding settings also need tuning. Before leaving either setup unattended, check:

  • Upload capacity: Make sure the sustained upload connection can support the configured stream, with room for normal variation. If OBS reports dropped frames, investigate network stability and bitrate before changing unrelated scene settings.
  • Resolution, frame rate and encoding: Match the output to the source material, host capacity and current YouTube requirements. A larger output is not automatically better if the computer cannot encode it reliably or the connection cannot sustain it.
  • Playlist behavior: Verify what happens at the end of a track, at the end of the playlist, when a file is missing and after the streaming process restarts.
  • Linux session and process supervision: A graphical OBS setup needs its session and encoder running. A scripted Liquidsoap setup still needs a host, network and a mechanism to notice and recover from failures.
  • Monitoring and key security: Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and keep the stream key out of shared scripts. Plan how you will replace it if exposed.

There is no substantiated universal bitrate, resolution or uptime percentage for an unspecified Linux host and network. Verify current YouTube guidance in Studio and the encoder documentation for your installed versions.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules for Indian music

Free streaming software does not grant permission to broadcast songs. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects such content, YouTube may display a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the content remains, the live stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream.

  • Clear the actual recordings and compositions. For Bollywood, devotional, regional or other Indian music, establish the rights for the specific compositions, recordings and intended public use. The applicable permissions depend on the catalog and rights holders; the legal definitions alone do not determine the clearance for a particular channel.
  • Coordinate Content ID allowlisting where relevant. YouTube says a stream may still be interrupted even when the streamer has a license if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. This can apply even when the channel limits the stream to territories where it holds the necessary rights.
  • Expect post-stream checks too. Archived live streams may receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends.
  • Do not rely on live Content ID matching as clearance. YouTube describes that feature as available only to certain partners using Content Manager, with requirements including worldwide rights and exclusive ownership. It is not a general tool for ordinary channels.

YouTube’s guidance is at its live-stream copyright help page; its limited live Content ID matching requirements are described at YouTube’s Content ID matching guidance. For India, the reviewed Copyright Act text includes definitions relevant to musical works and communication to the public, but those definitions do not settle the licensing requirements for a particular song catalog. Confirm permissions with the relevant rights holders.

Troubleshoot a stream that will not stay live

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
OBS reports dropped frames Connection instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain Check upload stability and reduce or reconfigure bitrate in line with current YouTube guidance. OBS identifies both network stability and bitrate as possible causes.
YouTube does not receive the encoder output Stream key, destination or channel setup Check that the key and RTMP destination match the current YouTube Studio stream details, and that the channel is permitted to go live.
Liquidsoap starts but the stream is silent or has no picture Playlist, image/video source, mux or FFmpeg configuration Check each source separately, then confirm the combined output and encoding settings against the Liquidsoap example and your installed configuration.
Playback stops after a process or connection failure No recovery or process supervision plan Check host and network availability, configure supervision for process failure, and verify whether the encoder reconnects and whether YouTube accepts the resumed output.
A live stream is interrupted despite a music license Content ID detection and channel allowlisting Contact the relevant rights owner about adding the channel to its allowlist; also check YouTube Studio for notices and any applicable copyright restrictions.

Costs and trade-offs

OBS and Liquidsoap are free software, but a self-hosted 24/7 stream still relies on a Linux computer or server, power, a stable network and time spent maintaining and monitoring the setup. The available sources do not establish a typical hosting cost or the reliability of any particular VPS, PC or connection. StreamNeo instead charges per slot for cloud operation; its first day is free with no card, and its plans vary by duration rather than stream quality. Compare current details at StreamNeo pricing.
