OBS Studio is the best free choice for looping a church sermon on YouTube Live. Use its Media Source to repeat one recording, or its VLC Video source to rotate a playlist. OBS runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux; the computer and internet connection must remain available throughout the broadcast.
Choose the right free looping setup
Both options use OBS Studio and are free. The difference is whether you want one sermon to repeat or several recordings to play in a set order. OBS describes itself as free and open-source software and supports Windows, macOS, and Linux (OBS Project).

OBS’s Media Source can loop an individual file. Its VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC; the source’s loop option is on by default (OBS Media Sources).
Prepare the church’s YouTube channel
- Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the channel in YouTube Studio before the service day (YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder).
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection.
- Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Enter it only in OBS’s stream settings, and do not include it in screenshots, public documents, or shared messages.
The encoder sends the video; the Live Control Room is where you can preview and manage the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health before and during a broadcast (YouTube encoder settings and streaming tips).

Set up OBS to loop a sermon
Option 1: repeat one recording
- Open OBS and create or select the scene you will use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source, give it a recognizable name, and select the sermon video file on the computer.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Confirm the preview shows the video and that its audio is audible through OBS.
Option 2: rotate a playlist
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS.
- In OBS, select + in the Sources panel and choose VLC Video Source.
- Create the source and add the sermon recordings in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist if it is not already enabled. Check the source preview and listen for audio before streaming.
Menu wording can vary slightly by OBS version and operating system. If VLC Video is unavailable, confirm VLC is installed and restart OBS.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test the stream
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then connect the account or choose the option to use a stream key, depending on the choices shown in your OBS version.
- If entering details manually, copy the stream URL and stream key from the YouTube Live Control Room into OBS. Keep the key confidential.
- In Settings > Output and Settings > Video, set an output resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can sustain.
- Start a short private or unlisted test broadcast. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, confirm the picture fills the frame, and listen for clean audio and a working loop.
- Stop the test, correct any issues, and repeat it if needed before relying on the setup for a service.
For encoder video, YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents support for H.264, H.265, and AV1. Its guidance lists a video bitrate range of 2–6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular church internet connection can sustain them. Choose settings based on measured upload capacity and test the actual setup (YouTube encoder settings and streaming tips).

Check picture and sound before going live
- Confirm the correct sermon or playlist is visible in the OBS preview.
- Verify that sound is reaching YouTube, not just playing through the local computer. Listen for clear speech and any unintended silence or clipping.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during the test for connection warnings or interruptions.
- Ensure the computer will not sleep or restart during the broadcast, and that the network connection will remain available.
Plan for a long broadcast, rights, and archiving
Keep a local recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited on very long broadcasts. If you need a complete record, make a local recording and check that there is enough storage before starting (YouTube: Archive live streams; YouTube: Turn on DVR on live streams).
Confirm permission for everything in the stream
Before broadcasting or archiving, confirm the church has the necessary rights for the sermon recording, music, and any third-party images or video. YouTube’s livestream terms require rights to the streamed material, including applicable music licensing rights, and require compliance with Community Guidelines and applicable laws (YouTube livestream terms and conditions).

What is specific to India?
The OBS and YouTube guidance above does not establish a different India-specific software workflow or bitrate. Test the church’s own upload connection and channel eligibility; conditions can vary by location and connection.
