For a free, local setup, use OBS Studio to encode and send your audiovisual stream to YouTube Live. If you also need automated music rotation, AzuraCast AutoDJ can manage playlists—but do not assume it alone sends a complete audiovisual stream to YouTube. Playlist automation and YouTube encoding can be separate jobs. Before choosing a setup, confirm how the audio, visuals, and encoder fit together, and clear the rights to every track you plan to broadcast.
Best options at a glance
| Option | Best fit | What it does | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Keeping uploaded videos streaming continuously without running a computer at home | Runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud to YouTube, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | It is a paid service after its one free day; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. |
| OBS Studio | A no-charge local encoder | Sends an audiovisual stream to YouTube Live. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software at no charge. | A YouTube listing does not establish unattended playlist scheduling or automatic recovery. The computer and connection used for encoding must remain available. |
| AzuraCast AutoDJ | Self-hosted, automated radio playlist rotation | Composes a 24/7 radio broadcast from media assigned to playlists; its documented features include standard rotation and scheduled playlists. | It requires self-hosting and basic Linux shell knowledge. The cited documentation does not establish that AzuraCast alone creates and sends an audiovisual YouTube Live stream. |
| Mixxx or BUTT | Live DJ or broadcast-client workflows | Mixxx can broadcast to Icecast and Shoutcast; BUTT is a cross-platform broadcast client. | The available documentation describes radio-server broadcasting, not automated 24/7 YouTube audiovisual output. Neither should be treated as a playlist AutoDJ plus YouTube encoder without verifying the full path. |
| Other cloud continuous-stream tools | A managed cloud operating model | YouTube’s encoder directory includes cloud tools such as Gyre for continuous streams of prerecorded video. | Current pricing, free quotas, playlist and audio behavior, and restart policies are not established here; check the provider’s current documentation. |
If “free” means no ongoing service bill, OBS is the clearest starting point for encoding. If “playlist automation” means hands-off radio rotation, AzuraCast is the relevant tool to evaluate, but you must verify how it connects to a YouTube encoder. These tools solve different parts of the workflow.
What a 24/7 YouTube music radio setup needs
A continuous music channel usually has at least two jobs: selecting and rotating media, and encoding an audiovisual feed for YouTube Live. A radio AutoDJ can handle rotation, while a YouTube encoder sends the live feed. A tool that performs one job is not automatically a complete solution for both.

- Audiovisual output: Combines audio with a visual element and encodes a stream YouTube can receive.
- YouTube ingest: Sends the encoded feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
- Unattended operation: Keeps the relevant host, service, and network connection available, and handles interruptions according to the tool’s capabilities.
Ask vendors or check documentation whether a product automates playlist rotation or only encodes; whether it can run unattended and recover from a dropped connection; whether it is local, self-hosted on a VPS, or managed in the cloud; which input formats and YouTube ingest steps it supports; and what continuous operation costs after any free quota. The available documentation does not establish every candidate’s recovery behavior or current service pricing.

How to build a free local setup with OBS
OBS is a practical no-charge starting point when you are prepared to keep a local computer and connection running. YouTube’s encoder setup uses the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The available information does not specify current OBS menu labels or a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe setting, so use YouTube’s current guidance for the stream format you intend to send rather than relying on guessed values.
- Enable YouTube Live early. First-time live-stream access may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before a planned launch.
- Prepare the playlist and visual. Decide how tracks will rotate and what viewers will see. OBS handles encoding; if you need automated radio rotation, evaluate AzuraCast as a separate layer and confirm how its output will reach the encoder.
- Set up the YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Configure OBS for the stream. Enter YouTube’s ingest details in OBS and set the video and audio output to match YouTube’s current recommendations. Check the resulting picture and sound before going live; no single bitrate or resolution is appropriate for every source and connection.
- Start the encoder and verify YouTube receives it. Confirm that the preview has both audio and the intended visual, then start the broadcast in YouTube Studio as required by the stream setup. Keep the computer, OBS, and internet connection running for the duration.
- Test the unattended plan. Confirm who or what will notice a stopped encoder or connection. The cited YouTube page does not document OBS automatic playlist scheduling or recovery, so do not assume either is built in.
AzuraCast AutoDJ: useful for rotation, not a confirmed YouTube pipeline
AzuraCast documents an AutoDJ that composes a live radio broadcast continuously when media is assigned to playlists. Its feature list describes standard rotation and scheduled playlists, making it relevant when the core requirement is automated radio programming rather than simply looping a video file.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
What to check before relying on it
- Every media item intended for automatic playback must belong to at least one playlist.
- AzuraCast is self-hosted; its documentation assumes basic Linux shell knowledge.
- The documentation does not confirm an audiovisual YouTube Live output. Establish how AzuraCast’s audio will be combined with visuals and sent through a YouTube-capable encoder before treating it as a full solution.
- AzuraCast describes the project as being in beta, recommends keeping the server up to date, and advises retaining a second copy of station media because updates may cause unexpected issues or data loss.
Other free broadcast tools: where they fit
Mixxx
Mixxx is free, open-source DJ software that can broadcast to Icecast and Shoutcast, according to AzuraCast’s documentation. That supports a live-DJ or radio-server use case; it does not establish automated 24/7 YouTube audiovisual output.
BUTT
BUTT is described as a free, cross-platform broadcast client, with Icecast mode recommended for DJ connections in the cited AzuraCast guidance. It is not documented there as a playlist AutoDJ or YouTube video encoder.

- Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer
Cloud continuous streaming
YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud tools, including Gyre, for continuous streaming of prerecorded video. A cloud service can change the operating model by moving the stream host off a local computer, but check each provider’s current support for audio, playlists, recovery, pricing, and any free allowance before choosing one.
Music rights, Content ID, and monetization
Rights are a prerequisite, not a setting you can fix after a stream is interrupted. YouTube’s Livestream Terms and Conditions require creators to have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Buying or downloading a track does not by itself establish permission to use it in a YouTube live stream.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If matched content remains after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. For music licensed from a third party, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted.
YouTube says live-stream revenue can include ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. These options do not establish that a particular channel is eligible or that a specific track’s license permits monetization. Confirm both channel eligibility and the rights terms for the music before relying on revenue.

Plan for archives and interruptions
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a promise that a 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If viewers need a full-length archive, decide on a separate recording and archive strategy rather than assuming the automatic archive will cover the entire continuous broadcast.
For continuity, check what happens if the local encoder, server, network, or YouTube ingest connection drops. The cited material does not establish automatic recovery for OBS, AzuraCast, Mixxx, or BUTT, so verify recovery behavior for the specific setup. For cloud services, confirm the provider’s restart policy and operating limits in its current documentation.
Cost and operating trade-offs
OBS is listed by YouTube as open-source and available at no charge, but a local workflow still depends on a computer and internet connection being available. AzuraCast is self-hosted, so its operating effort includes setting up and maintaining a Linux server; its documentation does not provide a service price. For other cloud tools, current pricing and free quotas were not established here. Compare the ongoing cost and maintenance against the importance of unattended operation, playlist scheduling, and recovery rather than equating “free software” with “free 24/7 service.”
