For a routine SHA-256 checksum, use sha256sum from GNU Coreutils where it is available. To check many files or audit a directory tree, consider hashdeep; for a wider selection of digest algorithms, consider RHash or OpenSSL’s dgst. Use b3sum when BLAKE3 is the required algorithm, and xxhsum only for fast, non-security checksums. These are free, open-source command-line options, but the evidence here supports six tool families—not a verified list of 22 distinct tools.
How to choose a file-hashing command-line tool
Start with the checksum format or workflow you need, not a speed ranking. A hash utility can calculate a digest for a file; some can also compare files against saved checksums, while recursive audit tools are designed to inventory many files.
- Match the algorithm. A checksum published by a software project must be checked with that same algorithm. GNU recommends considering SHA-2, SHA-3, or BLAKE2b when a more secure hash is needed. See the GNU Coreutils manual.
- Check the reference. Matching a file to a digest establishes that its bytes match that reference value. It does not establish that the reference itself is trustworthy; obtain it through a trusted channel.
- Check verification and output formats. If you need to verify a downloaded checksum manifest, make sure the command supports its format and checking workflow.
- Choose a multi-file workflow when needed. A single-file command is not automatically a convenient recursive inventory or audit tool.
- Do not use a non-cryptographic checksum for security. xxHash is designed for non-cryptographic checksums and is not suitable for security-related verification.
The available commands and package versions depend on your operating system and installation. Check the local manual or help output before relying on a particular option.
Tools for everyday checksums and verification
GNU Coreutils: a practical default for common checksum files
GNU Coreutils includes familiar commands such as sha256sum, md5sum, b2sum, and cksum; SHA-1 and SHA-2 sum commands are also documented. Sum commands can calculate digests and check saved checksum lists, making Coreutils a useful starting point when it is installed and its output format matches the file you need to verify. Consult the GNU Coreutils manual for command behavior and the Coreutils manual PDF.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a SHA-256 manifest in the format accepted by GNU’s command, the general workflow is to run sha256sum on the file to calculate its digest, or use its check mode with a saved checksum list. Read the command’s local manual for exact syntax and supported options on your system.
OpenSSL dgst: digest functions in an OpenSSL installation
OpenSSL’s dgst command computes message digests for supplied files and also supports signature operations. It is a sensible choice when OpenSSL is already part of your workflow or when you need a digest exposed by the installed build. Available algorithms can depend on the OpenSSL version and provider configuration, so consult the OpenSSL 3.4 dgst manual and your local configuration rather than assuming every build offers the same set.

Tools for particular algorithms and formats
b3sum: when you need BLAKE3
b3sum is a dedicated command-line utility for BLAKE3. Its project documentation describes checksum checking, raw output, configurable output length, and thread options. Choose it when BLAKE3 is specifically appropriate or required—not as a drop-in verifier for SHA-256 or another published digest. See the BLAKE3 project README for documented behavior.
RHash: a broad selection of digest algorithms
RHash supports a wide range of algorithms, including CRC variants, MD5, SHA families, Tiger, BitTorrent-related hashes, and others, according to the FreeBSD ports RHash manual. That breadth can help when you need to produce or check less common digest formats. Options and behavior can vary by packaged version; inspect rhash --help or the manual installed with your package before scripting against it.

Tools for directory inventories and fast comparisons
hashdeep: recursive hashing and audit workflows
hashdeep is designed for hashing multiple files recursively, computing multiple digests, matching known hashes, and auditing file collections. Its documented algorithms include MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, Tiger, and Whirlpool. Those features make it more suitable than a one-file command when the task is to create or compare a directory-scale inventory. The available reference is the hashdeep manual; check your platform’s packages and the project’s current status before adopting it for ongoing use.
xxhsum: non-cryptographic checksums
xxhsum calculates and checks xxHash checksums and includes benchmark options. The project identifies the CLI as GPLv2; see the xxHash project. Debian’s xxhsum manual describes xxHash as non-cryptographic and warns against security-related use. It can fit speed-oriented comparisons where resistance to an adversary is not required, but do not use it to establish authenticity or security.

This is a workflow-based shortlist, not a speed ranking. No comparable throughput results under shared hardware, file sizes, versions, and methods are established here, so benchmark claims would not be a sound basis for ranking these tools.
Why this is not a verified list of 22 tools
The available documentation establishes useful options across six tool families, but it does not verify 22 distinct utilities against a consistent inclusion standard. Some names refer to separate executables within a larger package, while others are dedicated algorithm-specific commands; counting commands, algorithms, or package variants as separate tools without checking them would make the title’s number misleading. The choices above are limited to tools with documented capabilities relevant to the stated workflows.

Where Hashcat fits—and where it does not
Hashcat is free and open source under the MIT license, but it is a password-recovery platform with many hash modes, not a routine file-checksum generator. It belongs in a discussion of password-hash recovery rather than this shortlist of utilities for calculating or checking file digests. See the Hashcat README.
