Stats is the closest free alternative if you want an always-visible Mac menu-bar dashboard: it offers modules for CPU, GPU, memory, disks, network, sensors, battery, Bluetooth, and clock data, and requires macOS 12 or later. For occasional checks of a slow app or busy process, start with the built-in Activity Monitor. Neither option is a complete iStat Menus clone, and Stats’ fan-control feature is no longer maintained.

iStat Menus sets a broad feature baseline: Bjango lists CPU/GPU, memory, disks, network, battery, sensors, weather, rules, and clock features, plus extensive customization. Its product page lists macOS 11 or later, a 14-day free trial, and availability through Setapp. Stats covers many core system metrics, but the available feature information does not establish full parity.
Stats: the closest free menu-bar replacement
Stats is a free, open-source menu-bar monitor for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Its listed modules cover CPU, GPU, RAM, disks, sensors, network, battery, Bluetooth, and clock data. Documented examples include memory pressure and swap, disk activity and SMART health, network throughput, battery health and cycle count, and the battery level of connected Bluetooth devices. It also advertises customizable widgets. The project’s README specifies macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer and says beta macOS releases are unsupported. Check the project’s current requirements before installing.

Limits to consider
- Do not rely on it for fan control. The maintainer marks Stats’ fan-control feature as legacy and says it receives no updates or fixes. Its fan and sensor readouts may still be useful, but this is not a dependable fan-control recommendation.
- Some modules may use more energy. The README identifies Sensors and Bluetooth among Stats’ more resource-intensive modules and says they can materially affect the app’s energy impact in some cases. This is maintainer guidance, not an independent comparison or benchmark.
- Hardware behavior can vary. A module’s presence does not guarantee every reading is available on every Mac; sensor availability depends on the machine.
The project homepage reports 100M+ downloads, 41 languages, and seven years of active development. These are publisher-reported figures, not independently audited measurements.
Activity Monitor: built-in troubleshooting, not a menu-bar dashboard
Activity Monitor is the simplest no-install choice when you want to identify a process consuming resources or investigate an unresponsive app. Apple documents views for CPU activity, memory use, energy consumption, and process details, along with the ability to force quit a troublesome process. Macs Fan Control: for a thermal or fan-control need
Macs Fan Control focuses on fan speeds and temperatures rather than broad performance monitoring. CrystalIDEA says it supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, offers real-time monitoring, and lets users set a fixed fan speed or base fan control on a sensor. Its product page says fans return to Auto when the app quits. Use it when thermals or manual fan settings are the specific requirement; it is not a substitute for iStat Menus’ wider mix of CPU, memory, network, alerts, weather, and clock features. Why MenuMeters is a legacy choice
The cited MenuMeters fork describes its target as older macOS versions through Big Sur and recommends newer, actively maintained menu-bar monitors for users on sufficiently new macOS. That makes it a poor default for a current Mac unless you have a specific older-system reason to use it. Check the fork’s stated scope at the MenuMeters repository.
