For a preservation-oriented master, use FFV1 version 3 in a Matroska (.mkv) container when your tools and workflow support it. The Library of Congress’s 2025–2026 Recommended Formats Statement lists FFV1 v3/MKV among its preferred file-based moving-image formats, after IMF. Keep that master separate from the MP4/H.264 upload copy you make for YouTube.
A file format alone is not an archive. Preserve the original production characteristics, document what is in each file, and keep independent backup copies.
Why an archival master should be separate from the YouTube upload
YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio for general uploads. It also re-encodes uploaded videos to optimize playback. Those recommendations describe a delivery file, not a reason to discard a higher-quality production source or preservation master. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

FFV1/MKV versus MP4/H.264 for archiving
FFV1/MKV: favor it for a preservation master
FFV1 is a lossless codec: encoding it does not discard picture information in the way a lossy codec does. That makes FFV1 v3 in MKV a strong choice when the goal is to retain a file-based master without additional codec generation loss. The Library of Congress describes FFV1 as intended for long-term audiovisual preservation and lists the FFV1/MKV combination as a preferred format.
Lossless does not mean risk-free. It cannot prevent deletion, storage failure, corruption, missing documentation, or a future workflow that cannot readily handle the files. The container and codec also need to fit the actual tools used to create, inspect, edit, and play the channel’s videos.

MP4/H.264: use it as a practical delivery copy
MP4/H.264 is appropriate when preparing a general YouTube upload, because it follows YouTube’s published recommendations. H.264 is lossy, and YouTube re-encodes uploads for playback, so an upload copy should not be treated as a substitute for a better source that you want to preserve.

ProRes/MOV: a reasonable workflow-dependent alternative
If the channel’s editing and delivery process already depends on ProRes in QuickTime, it is a credible option: the Library of Congress includes it in its preferred file-based formats. The choice between it and FFV1/MKV depends on compatibility, required features, metadata handling, editability, storage demands, and playback needs—not on a universal rule that one format suits every production.
A practical archive workflow for a 24/7 channel
- Keep the best available original or production master. Do not delete the camera original or existing master just because you have made a YouTube-ready export.
- Make an FFV1 v3/MKV preservation copy when appropriate. Confirm that the software in your production and playback workflow can create and verify the intended codec and container before converting a large archive.
- Preserve the production characteristics. Keep the original resolution and frame rate rather than changing them solely to match an upload preset. YouTube also recommends uploading at the recorded frame rate.
- Create a separate YouTube delivery file. Use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC or Opus audio for the general recommended upload path. Treat its bitrate targets as delivery guidance, not as archival specifications.
- Document and verify. Record codec, container, resolution, frame rate, color characteristics, audio, subtitles, and any conversion. After conversion, check playback and confirm that the file contains the expected picture and sound.
- Keep independent, recoverable copies. Make backup and disaster-recovery arrangements separately from choosing a codec. A single drive or other storage carrier is not a complete preservation strategy.
This workflow is a practical synthesis of the format and platform guidance; it is not a claim that the Library of Congress prescribes a specific pipeline for YouTube channels.

Storage, metadata, and format limitations
There is no useful single storage-capacity recommendation without knowing the archive’s footage volume, resolution and bitrate mix, retention period, and budget. Lossless preservation copies can require substantial storage, but the exact amount depends on the source material and encoding settings. Estimate from the channel’s actual files and planned retention rather than assuming a universal drive size.

The Library of Congress describes Matroska with FFV1 as an archival or storage format and reports institutional ingestion. Its format description notes that improved support for timecode rather than timestamps, and support for multi-planar and 3D video, are still in development. These limitations may not affect ordinary finished channel videos, but they are reasons not to call FFV1/MKV universally suitable for every production or preservation need. The same description reports several hundred FFV1/MKV files ingested as of November 2021; that is an institutional holdings figure, not a measure of creator adoption. See the Library of Congress Matroska/FFV1 format description.

The Library of Congress also cautions that a format tied to a particular physical carrier is not, by itself, suitable for long-term preservation. Its sustainability guidance emphasizes the feasibility of backup and disaster recovery. In practice, format choice, file documentation, verification, and independently recoverable copies are complementary parts of an archive.

If you are archiving videos because you use them in a continuous YouTube channel, the archive and the streaming setup solve different problems. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded material, so a computer, OBS, and a home internet connection do not have to stay on. See StreamNeo.
For an FFV1/MKV archive, keep the preservation master as your source of record and prepare a compatible upload or playback file for the streaming workflow as needed; the archive format is not a reason to assume every playback tool accepts it directly.
