For a practical SDR starting point, send a real-time H.264/AAC stream to YouTube over RTMPS, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a two-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution and frame rate to match the animation and the upload connection’s stable capacity. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 ingest and 6 Mbps for 720p30; these are live-ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
Recommended FFmpeg settings for an all-day YouTube stream
Use YouTube’s live ingest guidance as your baseline. It is separate from YouTube’s settings for uploading prerecorded videos. H.264 is a straightforward compatibility choice; YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported live video codecs. For a typical SDR animation stream, the following settings are a sensible starting point. YouTube’s live encoder settings may change, so check the current guidance when configuring a new stream.
| Setting | Starting point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A straightforward compatibility baseline. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for the live output. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Audio codec | AAC | MP3 is also listed by YouTube. For stereo, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. |
| Scan and pixels | Progressive; square pixels | Use the source’s intended aspect ratio and avoid unintended stretching. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are YouTube’s listed SDR guidance values. |
| Other H.264 guidance | Two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC | Apply where supported by the selected encoder. |
YouTube lists live frame rates up to 60 fps. For animation, match the source’s intended motion cadence when practical: a static loop may not benefit from 60 fps, while fast movement may look smoother at a higher frame rate if the source and encoder can sustain it. This is a content and capacity decision, not a special YouTube rule for animation. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends choosing settings appropriate to available upload bitrate.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
Resolution and frame rate affect the bitrate required and the load on the encoder. YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest table gives these examples:

| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended live H.264 ingest settings, not a promise that a particular connection will hold the stream, and not settings for prerecorded uploads. Aim below the upload capacity you can sustain consistently, leaving room for normal network variation. If the connection cannot reliably carry the chosen bitrate, reduce resolution or frame rate before increasing bitrate. A stable 720p stream is generally preferable to a 1080p stream that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects.
Use the animation itself to guide the choice: check the finest details at the chosen resolution and watch fast movement at the chosen frame rate. A mostly still illustration loop may not need 60 fps; high-motion animation may justify it when both the source and encoder support the load. Prepare the animation and stream key
- Confirm the source media. Check its resolution, frame rate, audio tracks, and whether it already has H.264 video and AAC audio. Decide whether the stream should include audio; a silent animation does not need an invented soundtrack.
- Enable live streaming and create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, set up the stream and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure FFmpeg for the selected ingest format. Set the YouTube RTMPS server address and stream key as the output destination, and select output codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, audio handling, and keyframe interval based on the source and the live-ingest table above.
- Make the input repeat and run at real-time speed. A file-based loop must repeat the input, advance timestamps sensibly, and be paced at real time rather than sent as fast as FFmpeg can process it. Map the intended video and audio streams deliberately.
- Preview before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview, watch representative movement and audio, and confirm the transition from the end of the animation back to its beginning. YouTube recommends testing before a live event with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Why there is no universal FFmpeg command
The correct command depends on the media and FFmpeg build. A source with compliant H.264/AAC may be stream-copied in some workflows; a source that needs resizing, a different frame rate, or a codec change must be encoded. A file with no audio needs different audio handling from one with an audio track. Hardware encoders also expose different options from software encoders.
FFmpeg’s official documentation provides RTMP streaming examples and describes an output FIFO muxer that can retry after temporary failures. Its options and behavior depend on the installed FFmpeg version, enabled libraries, input, encoder, and network. Treat any command found online as a template to verify against your build, not a universal recipe. FIFO recovery can help with transient failures, but it is not an uptime guarantee. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options supported by your installation.

Keep the stream healthy through the day
An all-day stream needs more than a bitrate that works once. YouTube recommends checking upload capacity, testing before going live, reviewing the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. For a repeated animation, also verify the loop boundary and audio behavior, review FFmpeg output or logs, and decide who or what will respond if the encoder or connection fails. YouTube’s operational tips emphasize advance setup and monitoring quality during a live stream.
- Test at the intended resolution and frame rate, with movement and audio representative of the planned stream.
- Watch for dropped frames, unstable upload capacity, encoder errors, and YouTube stream-health warnings.
- Listen across the loop point for abrupt cuts or unintended silence, and check that timestamps continue sensibly.
- Plan for local power, computer, and internet failures. A UPS may help keep a dedicated streaming computer powered during some outages, but it does not prevent internet failures or guarantee continuity.
Troubleshooting common all-day streaming problems
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream disconnects or bitrate fluctuates | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or a temporary network failure occurs. | Check YouTube stream health and connection stability; lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. |
| Motion looks uneven | Output frame rate does not suit the source, or the encoder cannot keep up. | Compare the source cadence with the chosen output and inspect encoder load; reduce frame rate or encoding demands if needed. |
| Video or audio stops at the end of the file | The input is not configured to repeat, or stream mapping and timestamps do not suit the loop. | Test the end-to-start boundary, confirm repeat behavior and mappings, and verify timestamps advance sensibly. |
| Audio is missing or incorrect | The file may have no audio stream, the wrong stream may be mapped, or the selected audio settings may not match the intended output. | Inspect source tracks, decide whether audio is required, and verify AAC or MP3 handling and stereo settings where applicable. |
| FFmpeg rejects an option or recovery setting | The installed build may not support that option, muxer, encoder, or library. | Check the local FFmpeg help and official documentation for the installed build; adapt the command to its available features. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Ingest settings, connection capacity, or encoder output may be unsuitable. | Review YouTube’s stream-health messages, confirm the selected live-ingest settings, and run another representative test before relying on the stream. |
