For a practical starting point, stream progressive 1080p at 30 fps using H.264, CBR video at 10 Mbps, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a two-second keyframe interval over RTMPS. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30; use that target if your church’s sustained upload capacity can support it with headroom. For a constrained or shared connection, 720p30 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps is a sensible alternative.

There is no India-specific encoder profile in YouTube’s guidance. The important local factor is the upload capacity available at the streaming location, measured under realistic conditions.

Recommended FFmpeg profile for church worship

The settings below suit a file-based 16:9 SDR loop with ordinary worship movement, such as people moving at the lectern or musicians playing. They are a starting configuration, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Match the settings to the source video and the upload connection you can sustain.

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Ingest RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live ingestion. Use the current ingest URL and stream key shown in the channel’s Live Control Room.
Video codec H.264 / AVC A broadly accessible option supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Resolution and frame rate 1920×1080 at 30 fps A practical balance for a fixed church camera. Use a lower resolution if the connection cannot sustain the matching bitrate.
Rate control CBR; 10 Mbps as a bandwidth-conscious starting point YouTube’s current H.264 guidance for 1080p30 is 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Ten Mbps is an editorial compromise within that range, not YouTube’s recommended H.264 value.
Keyframes Every 2 seconds YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, that is a 60-frame GOP.
Audio AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz Matches YouTube’s listed stereo audio guidance. Check that the sound-board feed remains present in quiet sections as well as during music.
Picture format Progressive, square pixels, 8-bit Rec. 709 SDR These are YouTube’s advanced SDR recommendations. Preserve the source aspect ratio rather than stretching a 16:9 feed.

YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1. Consider them only if your FFmpeg build and workflow support the codec and YouTube’s ingest accepts it. For the H.264 profile here, YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked in 2026, lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30; at 720p30 it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. The 10 Mbps 1080p30 starting point above is below the H.264 recommendation.

FFmpeg command for looping a worship video

This illustrative command loops a local video file and sends it to YouTube over RTMPS. It assumes the input has a video stream and an audio stream, and the installed FFmpeg build includes libx264 and RTMPS support. Replace the file path, ingest URL and key with your own values.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i worship.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'

The example fixes the output at 30 fps, sets a 60-frame GOP, and disables scene-cut keyframes to keep the keyframe cadence fixed. The FLV container is used for RTMP-family ingest. FFmpeg option behaviour can vary by release and build; check ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264 and the local FFmpeg documentation before relying on a particular option.

Use YouTube’s 1080p30 H.264 recommended bitrate

If upload capacity allows and you want to match YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 1080p30, change each of the three 10M values to 14M. That raises the video target, maximum rate and buffer size proportionally; it also increases the sustained upload demand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a lower profile when the connection is limited

For 720p30 H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Change the output resolution to 1280×720 and set -r 30. Choose a video bitrate and maximum rate your measured connection can sustain within YouTube’s range, then use a proportionate buffer. Do not keep a 1080p output setting if the source or available upload cannot support it reliably.

Check upload capacity before choosing a bitrate

YouTube advises allowing 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. The total bitrate of primary and backup streams, plus that margin, should fit within the upload capacity actually available to the encoder. Other church or office users, Wi-Fi conditions and competing uploads can reduce that capacity.

  1. Measure outbound bandwidth at the location and on the connection the stream will use.
  2. Allow for the stream’s total bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% margin; include any backup stream and other use that shares the connection.
  3. If the link cannot hold the target reliably, reduce resolution or bitrate and test again. A stable lower-resolution stream is preferable to a higher target the connection repeatedly loses.

These bitrate figures are YouTube’s encoder guidance, not an assessment of any particular Indian ISP or church connection. A local measurement is needed to choose a sustainable setting.

Prepare and test the YouTube stream

  1. Check eligibility. YouTube lists channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days among its live-stream prerequisites. Confirm the channel’s current status before scheduling the service.
  2. Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the current ingest URL and stream key from the channel’s Live Control Room. Use the current values presented there rather than relying on an old saved endpoint.
  3. Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository or expose it in logs. If it is disclosed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Test privately or unlisted. Send a test with movement and audio similar to the worship service. Check the YouTube preview, stream health, framing and audio continuity before going public.
  5. Confirm picture and sound. Verify the image is not stretched or unexpectedly cropped, and listen for clipping, unwanted noise or missing audio during quiet sections. If the board feed is mono or uses a different format, confirm the output mapping and stereo result rather than assuming the command fixes source problems.
  6. Plan operations. Arrange monitoring and a recovery procedure for encoder, power and internet failures. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream; a single FFmpeg process is not a guarantee of a continuous connection.
  7. Keep a local recording if the archive matters. These encoder settings do not guarantee that a complete archive will be retained for an indefinitely long event.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream disconnects or health warnings appear: the upload link may be congested or unable to sustain the chosen bitrate. Recheck capacity during normal church-network use, retain the 20% margin and lower the profile if needed.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the current ingest URL and stream key were copied correctly, RTMPS support is present in the FFmpeg build, and the key has not been replaced in YouTube Studio.
  • Video appears stretched or cropped: preserve the source aspect ratio and use an output resolution appropriate to the source. Avoid forcing a 16:9 frame onto footage with a different aspect ratio without deciding how it should be fitted.
  • Audio is silent or inconsistent: verify the input actually contains an audio stream and that the selected map -map 0:a:0 points to it. Check the mixer output and test quiet portions, not just loud music.
  • FFmpeg rejects an option or codec: build configurations differ. Confirm libx264 and RTMPS support, inspect ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264, and consult the documentation for the installed release.
  • The service needs to continue after power, network or encoder failure: encoder parameters alone cannot provide that resilience. Establish who monitors the stream and what action they take when it stops.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Before looping worship recordings, confirm that the church has the rights or permissions needed for the music, lyrics, recordings and other material in the video. A song being performed in a service does not by itself establish that a particular recording or livestream is cleared for YouTube. Review YouTube’s current channel eligibility and Live Control Room requirements before the event, and resolve any copyright claims or restrictions with the relevant rights holders. Do not assume that repeating a recording makes it exempt from YouTube’s rules.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live without leaving a church computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists. The setup is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, then go live.
