For U.S. local pickup, OfferUp is the clearest app-centered option; Craigslist offers straightforward classifieds, while eBay adds checkout and pickup verification. Check for recent, comparable listings near your pickup area before choosing: no reviewed source establishes which service has the most local buyers everywhere.

Craigslist: straightforward classifieds, with category-specific fees
Craigslist can be a simple way to post a local classified ad, but “free” does not apply to every category. Its official fee schedule lists, for example, a $5 charge for U.S. cars, trucks, RVs, and motorcycles posted by owners; $5 for services in the U.S. and Canada; and $5 for U.S. dealer for-sale categories. The official fee schedule does not establish comparative buyer volume, response speed, or safety outcomes. Decide whether Craigslist is worth using by checking recent, relevant listings in your area rather than assuming it will reach more buyers than another service.
eBay: local pickup with checkout and handover confirmation
eBay supports local pickup, including pickup-only listings. Buyers can search for nearby items and select local pickup at checkout; buyer and seller can coordinate through eBay Messages. On eBay’s U.S. fees page, most categories receive up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings monthly. For most categories, the listed final value fee is 13.6% on the amount up to $7,500 and 2.35% on the portion above $7,500, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less or $0.40 for higher orders. Nextdoor: check neighborhood availability and rules
Nextdoor is a neighborhood-oriented option named by people looking for alternatives, but its current official For Sale & Free eligibility rules and transaction features are not established here. Confirm that the feature is active in your neighborhood and review Nextdoor’s current guidance before relying on it for a sale. Do not assume particular fees, protections, or eligibility requirements without checking the service’s current rules.

How to choose for your item and pickup area
- Check local activity. Search each candidate service for recent listings of comparable items near the actual pickup area. Listings elsewhere do not show that buyers are active where you plan to meet.
- Choose the transaction model. For local-only app listings, consider OfferUp; for classifieds, consider Craigslist; for checkout and a pickup-confirmation code, consider eBay.
- Work out the fee before posting. OfferUp says in-person transactions carry no platform fee, though optional features may cost extra. Craigslist fees vary by category and location. eBay fees vary by category and order details.
- Use the service’s safety workflow. OfferUp recommends public, well-lit meetup spots. On eBay, keep the exact address private until purchase and use the pickup code to confirm handover. Platform recommendations reduce neither all risk nor the need for your own judgment.
