There is no universal external USB disc drive for gaming PCs and consoles. For PC, choose an optical drive that matches the discs and software you need. For PlayStation, Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 is the documented add-on for specific PS5 Digital Edition models and PS5 Pro. For Xbox, Series X disc-drive models include an optical drive, while Xbox says Series S does not support external USB disc drives.

Which PS5 models can use Sony’s disc-drive add-on?
Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive is a detachable accessory for compatible PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles; it is not a generic USB drive. PlayStation support identifies the CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 model groups as compatible, and Sony’s product page also names PS5 Pro. The original CFI-1000 PS5 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media, according to PlayStation’s model and disc support information.
Check the model group printed on the console or its packaging before buying. Sony’s product page lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback for the accessory, and says internet access is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. PS5 disc formats are not a blanket guarantee for every disc
PlayStation’s support page lists Ultra HD Blu-ray; Blu-ray formats including BD-ROM and BD-R/RE with specified recording formats; and DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW as supported media formats on PS5 and PS4. It lists CDs, BD-RE version 1.0, BD-R/RE XL, and unfinalized DVDs as unsupported. What works with Xbox Series X and Series S?
Xbox Series X
The Xbox Series X disc-drive model has a built-in UHD Blu-ray optical drive, so an external drive is not the documented way to add disc support. Xbox’s FAQ says the console can play supported Xbox original, Xbox 360, and Xbox One game discs, as well as DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray movies. The FAQ says to download the Blu-ray Player app for movie discs. Confirm the console is the disc-drive model, since the product lineup distinguishes it from all-digital options. Xbox Series S
Xbox’s FAQ states that Series S is all-digital and does not support external USB disc drives. The cited FAQ was published in 2020, so treat this as the limitation documented there rather than a claim about any later policy update. If disc playback is essential, verify current Xbox support information for your region before choosing a console; a generic PC optical drive is not a documented workaround. How to choose an external optical drive for a gaming PC
PC optical drives are a separate purchase from console game support. Windows support documentation covers troubleshooting CD/DVD drives in Windows 10 and Windows 11, but does not recommend or certify individual retail drives. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications for the exact drive and the software publisher’s requirements for playback. Microsoft Windows CD/DVD drive support
Choose by disc format and task
- CD or DVD reading: A USB DVD drive is enough only if you need the formats it supports. Check whether it reads, writes, or both; those capabilities are not interchangeable.
- Blu-ray discs: Choose a Blu-ray-capable drive if your discs require it, then verify that your playback software supports the format and operating system. Drive hardware alone does not establish that Blu-ray video playback software is included.
- UHD Blu-ray: Verify UHD Blu-ray support specifically with both the drive manufacturer and software publisher. Do not assume a drive described simply as “Blu-ray” supports UHD playback.
- Writing discs: Confirm the exact writable formats, such as the DVD or Blu-ray variants you plan to use, rather than relying on a generic “optical drive” label.
Check the connection and host requirements
- Confirm the drive connects to an available port on your PC; check whether it uses USB-A or USB-C and whether an adapter is needed.
- Check the manufacturer’s requirements for power. A portable drive may draw power over USB, while a particular model may require a separate supply or a specific port.
- Verify compatibility with your Windows version and any playback or writing software you intend to use. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance can help if a CD/DVD drive is not recognized, but it does not certify a specific model.
Do not select by advertised speed alone: the cited official sources do not establish comparative retail-drive performance or game-loading tests. They also do not show that a PC optical drive can authenticate or play console game discs as a console would.

Do not confuse an optical drive with external game storage
An optical drive reads or writes discs; a USB SSD or hard drive stores installed games and other files. PlayStation documents USB extended storage separately and says PS5 games stored there must be copied back to console storage before they can be played. PS4 has a built-in disc slot. Sony says its media playback feature must be enabled over the internet once before Blu-ray or DVD playback. That first-use activation is distinct from the internet pairing step required when setting up the PS5 CFI-ZDD1 accessory. PlayStation disc support
