You do not need a nine-item ranking to choose an external optical drive: the right pick depends on whether you need CD/DVD only or Blu-ray, what port your computer has, and whether you plan to burn discs. The evidence available supports several concrete options, but not nine verified “best” drives for 2026. Here are the defensible choices and the checks that matter before buying.
Choose by disc format and task
Start with the discs you need to use. A CD/DVD writer will not read or burn Blu-ray discs; a Blu-ray-capable drive is the more versatile choice when you also need that format. Reading, writing, and movie playback are separate capabilities: a drive may read and burn a format while lacking the software needed to play a movie stored on it.
- CDs and DVDs: A slimline CD/DVD writer is sufficient for installing software from discs, reading files, or burning supported CD/DVD media.
- Blu-ray: Choose a drive that explicitly lists Blu-ray support. For larger-capacity discs, check for BDXL support and the stated capacity.
- Archiving: If you want to use M-DISC media, confirm the drive is identified as M-DISC ready and buy compatible blank media. That label alone does not establish a specific archival lifespan.
External drives supported by the available evidence
The following options are supported by manufacturer specifications or by a Laptop Mag recommendation published November 28, 2025. These are not the results of comparative hands-on testing, and the editorial recommendations date from 2025 rather than 2026.

Check the connection, power, and operating system
Match the drive’s cable to your computer
Check whether your computer has USB-C, USB-A, or both, and whether the drive includes a suitable cable or adapter. The Verbatim 43886 package is documented as including a USB-C cable and USB-A adapter. For other models, confirm the box contents and connector on the exact regional listing rather than assuming that a product name guarantees a particular cable.
Confirm power requirements
The Verbatim 98938 and 43886 are described as USB-powered. The 71094 lists USB 3.2 Gen 1 connectivity with USB 2.0 compatibility. Do not assume every external optical drive draws enough power from every hub or port; check the selected model’s requirements and connect it directly to the computer if it is not detected reliably.

Separate drive support from software support
A drive’s operating-system compatibility does not guarantee that every included application works on that system. Verbatim says the bundled Nero software for the 98938 and 43886 is Windows-only. The 98938 page also says DVD movie playback software is not included, and the 71094 page excludes movie playback software. Blu-ray movie playback may likewise require separate compatible software. Check the operating system and playback application requirements independently from the drive’s hardware specifications.

If you plan to burn discs, verify the media formats
“DVD writer” does not tell you every writable format a drive accepts. Before buying, compare the drive’s listed supported media with the blank discs you intend to use—such as CD-R, DVD-R, or other formats specified by the manufacturer. For archival use, verify M-DISC readiness and use compatible M-DISC media; neither the label nor the manufacturer’s general durability language establishes a guaranteed lifetime for your data.
