There is no single encrypted cloud storage service that is best for everyone. Start by checking whether end-to-end encryption covers all your files and shared content, then weigh sharing controls, sync and offline access, recovery options, storage, and—if you’re buying for a team—administrator controls. Proton Drive is a useful personal-storage example, Tresorit documents business-oriented controls, and Sync.com is worth comparing for its account-wide zero-knowledge approach. Verify current plan terms and prices with providers before choosing; the available information does not establish a reliable, comparable price table.
What makes cloud storage genuinely end-to-end encrypted?
“Encrypted” can mean different things. Encryption in transit protects data as it moves between your device and a service; encryption at rest protects stored data. End-to-end encryption, often described by providers as zero-knowledge encryption, is designed so the provider cannot read the protected content. The practical question is what the design covers: every file, relevant metadata, and shared files, or only a selected area or feature.
Provider descriptions are useful for understanding a design, but they are not independent guarantees about every workflow. Read the security documentation and confirm that the features you plan to use—especially sharing, recovery, and team administration—retain the protections you expect.

How the leading options differ
The available evidence supports comparing these services by documented features, not declaring a universal winner. Proton Drive and Tresorit have official security descriptions in the available sources; Sync.com is included based on a secondary 2026 comparison. Confirm current product details directly before relying on them.

| Service | Encryption and sharing | Sync, recovery, or administration | Storage and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton Drive | Proton says all files and folders receive end-to-end and zero-access encryption. It describes encrypted sharing links with optional passwords and expiration dates. Proton security details | Proton documents cross-device sync, offline desktop access, and recovery of previous file versions on specified paid plans. Proton storage and features | Proton’s storage page lists 5 GB for Proton Free and 200 GB for Drive Plus. | Tresorit | Tresorit says files and relevant metadata are encrypted on users’ devices with unique keys. Its security page describes key sharing designed to prevent the service from accessing shared keys. Tresorit security details | Its business documentation describes administrator policies such as two-step verification, IP filtering, session timeouts, allowed-device rules, and sharing policies. | Sync.com | Cloudwards’ 2026 comparison describes zero-knowledge protection across free and paid account tiers. This is secondary editorial evidence, not an official product verification. Cloudwards’ 2026 comparison | The same comparison notes a recovery trade-off: if you lose login credentials, the provider may be unable to restore access under the whole-account zero-knowledge model. When Proton Drive is a fit
Proton Drive is a candidate for individuals who want end-to-end encryption across their files and folders, along with encrypted sharing. Proton says shared links can be password protected and given expiration dates. Its pages also describe cross-device sync and offline desktop access. See Proton’s security explanation and its storage and feature page.
Proton’s storage page lists 5 GB on Proton Free and 200 GB on Drive Plus, and says previous-file-version recovery is available on Plus and Unlimited plans. These plan details can change, so confirm current capacity and recovery terms before subscribing. The page also says Proton serves over 100,000 organizations; that is Proton’s own published figure, not an independently verified user count.
When Tresorit is a fit for a business
Tresorit’s security page describes device-side encryption for files and relevant metadata, with unique randomly generated keys, and a public-key-based approach to sharing keys. For business users, it documents controls that administrators can apply, including two-step verification, IP filtering, timeout, allowed-device, and sharing policies. Review Tresorit’s security documentation to assess the controls against your organization’s requirements.

Tresorit also describes HIPAA-related services and business associate agreements for customers seeking HIPAA compliance. That does not establish that every use of the service, configuration, or organizational workflow meets an entity’s legal and operational obligations. Evaluate the specific agreement, setup, and responsibilities with qualified compliance counsel where needed.
What to check before choosing a service
Sharing controls
Check whether recipients need an account, whether links can be password protected or set to expire, and whether you can revoke access. For business use, determine whether administrators can restrict external sharing or apply organization-wide policies. A strong storage design does not automatically make every sharing workflow appropriate for sensitive material.
Sync, offline use, and backup
Sync keeps changes available across devices; it is not necessarily a separate backup. Deletion or unwanted changes can sync too. Check supported platforms, offline behavior, and how the service handles conflicting edits. Proton documents offline desktop access, but do not assume other services behave the same way.

- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
- 3-year limited warranty
File and account recovery
Find out whether a service can restore deleted files or earlier versions, for how long, and on which plans. These are separate from recovering account access. With zero-knowledge designs, losing credentials or recovery material may make restoration by the provider impossible; Cloudwards identifies this as a potential trade-off for Sync.com. Keep recovery details secure and maintain another copy of important files rather than relying on a single account.

Storage, price, and business fit
Compare current capacity, billing term, user count, transfer limits, and recovery features on provider pages before purchasing. The available information does not establish comparable current prices or a complete cross-provider plan table. Organizations should also check access management, documentation, contract terms, and whether the service’s controls meet their specific needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep a separate backup of important files
Cloud sync alone is not a complete backup strategy. CISA advises: “Frequently back up your data to reduce the risk of permanent data loss.” Its device-protection guidance recommends a secure external hard drive or a properly vetted cloud service, encrypting removable media, and keeping a backup drive in a safe place and disconnected when it is not in use.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
An external drive is a separate backup option, not cloud storage. Check whether encryption is provided by the drive itself or by your operating system; not every drive includes built-in hardware encryption.
How to make the final choice
- Match encryption scope to your files. Confirm whether protection covers all files and shared content, and whether the provider describes metadata protection.
- Test the workflow you need. Check device support, offline access, sharing permissions, and how changes and deletions sync.
- Plan for recovery. Understand both file-version recovery and account recovery, including the consequences of losing credentials or recovery material.
- For teams, inspect administration and contracts. Compare available policies and assess the service against your actual legal and operational requirements.
- Verify current plan details. Confirm capacity, price, billing, transfer limits, and recovery terms with the provider immediately before buying.
- Keep an independent backup. Store a separate encrypted copy of important data and disconnect removable backup media when it is not in use.
