Best overall pick: the Rivian R1T, based on Car and Driver’s 2026 editorial ranking. For maximum advertised towing or range, compare the exact Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV trims that carry those ratings—not just the model names. If you tow often, plan around the loaded trailer and charging stops: a truck’s unloaded range is not a useful estimate of its towing range.
Which electric pickup is best for your needs?
- Best overall: Rivian R1T. Car and Driver names it its 2026 favorite for packaging, utility, and performance. That is the publication’s editorial judgment, not a universal test result.
- For a high published tow rating: compare the 2026 Silverado EV LT, rated by Chevrolet for up to 12,500 pounds, with the specified 2026 Sierra EV Denali extended-range configuration, also rated by GMC for up to 12,500 pounds. Confirm the rating and required equipment for the truck you intend to buy.
- For a long manufacturer-estimated range: Chevrolet gives a GM-estimated maximum of 478 miles for the 2026 Silverado EV Max Range LT or Max Range Trail Boss. The trim and battery matter; this is not the range for every Silverado EV.
- For familiar F-150 packaging: the 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning is a relevant alternative, but the cited figures are for model year 2025. Check local inventory and current pricing.
No single truck is best for every owner. The right choice depends on the trailer’s loaded weight and shape, how far you tow between charging stops, what you carry in the bed, and whether the truck fits your daily routes and parking.
How the published specifications compare
The figures below come from two kinds of sources: Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking page, which lists model-level range spans and starting prices, and manufacturer comparison pages, which give selected trim-specific figures. They are not one controlled, independent comparison. Range estimates, trims, and model years differ, so read each entry with its source and configuration.

For a direct trim-to-trim illustration, GMC compares a 2025 Rivian R1T Dual Standard with a 2026 Sierra EV Elevation standard range. GMC lists starting MSRPs of $70,990 and $62,400, EPA-estimated ranges of 270 and 283 miles, maximum towing of 7,700 and 8,500 pounds, and maximum payloads of 2,317 and 2,250 pounds, respectively. This is a manufacturer comparison of those two configurations, not a neutral assessment of either full model line.
Car and Driver’s Silverado EV range span of 283–493 miles and Chevrolet’s 478-mile GM-estimated maximum for specified Max Range trims do not describe identical configurations or necessarily the same page update. Treat each number as the estimate attributed to its source, and verify the current trim specification before comparing vehicles.
How much range do electric pickups lose while towing?
There is no dependable single percentage. Trailer weight and aerodynamics, speed, terrain, weather, and elevation all affect energy use. A Virginia transportation report summarizes an Edmunds example in which towing required about 27% more electricity and reduced maximum range by 27%; that is an example, not a universal towing penalty.

The same report summarizes older, specific tests that show how sharply results can change with conditions. In one Car and Driver test, a Rivian R1T towing a 5,650-pound trailer had an estimated range of about 103 miles, compared with about 220 miles unloaded at 75 mph. In another test towing a 6,100-pound camper at approximately 70 mph, reported ranges were about 140 miles for the GMC Hummer EV, 100 miles for the Ford Lightning, and 110 miles for the Rivian R1T. These tests used different vehicles and conditions; they are not a directly comparable 2026 ranking or a prediction for every owner.
For a purchase decision, assume the advertised unloaded range will not carry over unchanged when towing. Ask for the precise trim’s towing and payload limits, then plan a route using a conservative estimate based on your own trailer and travel conditions. The cited sources do not establish a current, controlled independent towing-efficiency winner across all these models.

Can you tow a camper with an electric pickup?
Yes, if the truck’s specific configuration is rated for the camper’s loaded weight and the whole towing setup is within its limits. The practical question is whether you can make the trip with charging stops that suit both the vehicle and trailer. A high maximum tow rating does not mean the truck can pull that load over its unloaded advertised range.
- Check the loaded trailer weight. Compare its actual travel-ready weight—not just an empty or dry figure—with the selected trim’s maximum tow rating. Also account for people, gear, and other cargo within the truck’s payload limit.
- Plan for towing range, not brochure range. Use the intended route, likely speed, terrain, and weather to estimate energy needs. Leave room for detours or a charger that is unavailable.
- Check the charging stop’s layout. The Virginia transportation report notes that many charging stations have parking-style spaces rather than trailer-friendly pull-through spaces. Confirm that the station can accommodate the complete truck-and-trailer combination, or determine whether you would need to unhitch.
- Verify the exact truck’s towing equipment and limits. Confirm configuration-specific ratings and required equipment with the manufacturer or dealer before purchase; a model name alone does not establish that every trim has the same capability.
Which electric pickups work best for hauling?
Bed length and the ability to carry long cargo can matter as much as payload. Chevrolet says the available Silverado EV Multi-Flex Midgate can extend the load floor through the cab for items up to 10 feet 10 inches long. GMC describes an available Sierra EV MultiPro Midgate that creates a similar longer load floor when the rear seats are folded and the back glass is removed. Those setups can help with bulky or long items, but they depend on the feature being fitted and configured as specified.

GMC also describes a lockable, weatherproof front eTrunk on the Sierra EV. Front storage can be useful for gear that should stay separate from the bed, but compare the actual truck’s storage layout, bed access, and cargo capacity rather than assuming all versions share the same features.
What to prioritize for daily driving
A truck that tows well on paper still has to work on ordinary trips. Before choosing, compare the exact trim’s usable range for your routine, cab comfort, visibility, turning and parking footprint, storage, bed access, and local service support. If you can charge at home, check whether your electrical setup and the truck’s included equipment suit regular charging; otherwise, map the public charging you would actually rely on.
- Frequent long-distance towing: prioritize realistic loaded range, dependable route options, and trailer-compatible charging locations alongside tow rating.
- Long or awkward cargo: check bed dimensions and whether an available midgate or other pass-through feature is included on the trim you are considering.
- Mostly commuting and occasional hauling: give daily range, parking ease, cab comfort, and practical storage more weight than a maximum tow figure you may rarely use.
- Shopping from advertised prices: treat listed starting prices as reference figures, not quotes. The cited comparisons do not establish current transaction prices or local inventory; verify trim availability, dealer pricing, delivery timing, and applicable incentives in your area.
How to make the final choice
Start with your heaviest travel-ready trailer and the longest route you expect to tow. Eliminate any configuration that cannot meet your towing and payload needs; then compare charging stops for the actual truck-and-trailer combination. Among the remaining choices, select the bed, storage, cab, and daily-driving footprint that best fit your routine. On the available evidence, the R1T is the strongest editorial all-around pick, while the Silverado EV and Sierra EV merit close attention for their specified high-range or high-tow configurations.
