There is no single best data API for every developer. Start with the data you need, the places and records it must cover, and the rights your application requires. A documented API can replace scraping only when it actually exposes those records and permits your intended use; an API response is not, by itself, proof that data is complete or accurate.

What makes data “clean” enough to use?

For this guide, clean data means data that is structured, documented, and licensed for the way you plan to use it. That is a practical integration standard, not a promise of accuracy. A well-formed JSON response can still be stale, incomplete for your region, or unsuitable for redistribution. Conversely, public records can be useful even when you need to account for gaps or processing delays.

Before committing to an API, check that it provides the required entities and time range, identify who supplies the underlying data, inspect the schema and update cadence, and read the terms for commercial use, attribution, storage, and redistribution. Also verify limits, error behavior, caching guidance, and the provider’s support or service commitments. These factors matter at least as much as whether the first test request succeeds.

Choose by data job, not by a universal ranking

Weather, filings, geospatial records, exchange rates, news, and reference data are different products. A useful shortlist begins with the dataset and geographic coverage, not a comparison table that declares unrelated APIs one overall winner. The examples below have different audiences and access conditions.

U.S. weather National Weather Service API Provides forecasts, alerts, observations, and other weather data for U.S.-focused applications. Confirm the coverage, data type, rate behavior, and cache instructions match your application.
Weather prototyping; potentially commercial weather Open-Meteo The free service offers HTTP GET access returning JSON without a key or signup, for non-commercial use. Free-tier commercial use is not allowed. Commercial access uses a customer subscription and dedicated endpoint; confirm current terms and quotas.
Public company filings and facts SEC EDGAR data APIs Provides public filing submissions and extracted XBRL company data. Follow SEC automated-access policy and distinguish public data access from filer-account and submission operations.
Geospatial, currency, news, or reference data Build a use-case-specific shortlist Coverage and rights vary by dataset; named candidates include MapTiler, Geoapify, ExchangeRate-API, Fixer, Wikimedia REST API, GDELT, and The Guardian Open Platform. These names are discovery candidates, not verified endorsements here. Check current provider documentation, plans, licenses, and geographic or editorial coverage.

Weather APIs: match the service to geography and use

U.S. weather: National Weather Service

The National Weather Service API is a plausible starting point when an application needs relevant U.S. forecasts, alerts, observations, or other weather data. NWS describes the information presented through its API as open data, free to use for any purpose, and notes reasonable rate limits. The service uses cache-friendly expiration based on the information lifecycle. Read its live documentation before production, especially for endpoint-specific usage and cache behavior; “reasonable” is not a quota guarantee for a particular workload.

The geographic qualifier matters: this is a U.S.-focused choice, not a general answer for global weather coverage. Evaluate whether the locations and weather products you need are present, how often your application must refresh them, and whether its display or storage requirements fit the applicable terms.

Open-Meteo: prototype access is not commercial access

Open-Meteo documents plain HTTP GET requests that return JSON. Its free API requires no API key or signup, but is for non-commercial use, allows up to 10,000 daily calls, and requires attribution under CC BY 4.0. These are provider-stated terms reviewed in September 2026, not independent measurements. Do not treat the free endpoint as suitable for a commercial production workload simply because it is technically accessible.

For commercial use, Open-Meteo offers customer subscriptions through a dedicated endpoint. Its pricing page, as reviewed in September 2026, listed a Standard plan with 1 million calls per month and a Professional plan with 5 million calls per month; those plan figures and terms can change, so verify them directly before estimating cost. The page also describes call budgets and says the monthly plan budget has no hard cutoff. Confirm what happens in your account and contract at expected volume rather than inferring unlimited service from that wording.

Keep the data license distinct from the server-software license: Open-Meteo describes API data under CC BY 4.0 and its open-source server under AGPLv3. A license for server code does not grant commercial API access, and commercial subscription does not by itself erase any data-attribution obligation that applies. Review the provider’s current license and customer terms for your actual use.

Public filings and company facts: SEC EDGAR

The SEC’s data.sec.gov APIs serve public EDGAR data, including company submissions and extracted XBRL company facts. They are the relevant starting point for developers who want to consume public filing information or company facts, rather than scrape filing pages for data the SEC already exposes through API access.

Do not confuse those public-data APIs with the EDGAR filing toolkit. The toolkit is for filers who need to check system status, manage users, submit filings, or check submissions; those operations use bearer tokens. A developer looking up public company records should not assume filer credentials or toolkit access are required for the public data service. In either case, automated access must comply with SEC policy, including its fair-access guidance.

How to compare two viable APIs

Once the job narrows the field, compare candidates against the same operational checklist. Provider demos often show a successful response; they do not establish that an API will fit your data model, downstream rights, or production load.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Coverage: List required regions, entities, fields, and historical periods. Verify each against documentation or a representative response rather than inferring coverage from a provider’s category label.
  • Freshness and history: Determine update cadence and available historical depth. A live-data use case and a backtesting use case may need different products.
  • Provenance and gaps: Identify the upstream data owner, transformation steps, and known omissions. Do not infer quality from the existence of an API.
  • Schema and integration: Check formats, stable identifiers, pagination, versioning, error responses, SDKs, and documentation. Plan how schema changes will be detected and handled.
  • Access and security: Determine whether a key or token is needed, which scopes it grants, and where credentials belong. Keep secrets server-side and avoid sending unnecessary private data to providers.
  • Rights: Read commercial-use, attribution, retention, display, and redistribution terms separately. Being allowed to fetch data does not automatically mean you can resell or republish it.
  • Limits and resilience: Find quota units and reset periods, handling for 429 responses, cache guidance, support options, and any service commitment. Test retries and backoff without creating more load than the provider permits.
  • Total cost: Estimate expected request volume and include overages, paid access, support requirements, engineering work, and the cost of migrating if coverage or terms change.

For weather in particular, useful comparison axes include data-source breadth, history, resolution, formats, and access model. A 2026 weather comparison published by provider Meteomatics discusses these dimensions, but it is a provider comparison, not an independent benchmark. There is no established independent, broadly comparable result here that ranks these APIs for accuracy, uptime, or “cleanliness.”

Free access: useful for evaluation, not a shortcut around terms

A free tier can make prototyping easier, but assess its permitted use and operating limits before designing around it. The examples illustrate materially different terms: NWS describes its information as open and free to use for any purpose with reasonable rate limits; Open-Meteo’s free API is non-commercial and requires attribution; SEC EDGAR provides public data subject to its automated-access policy. “Free” does not mean the same thing in each case.

A third-party free-tier guide can help identify candidates, but its figures are snapshots, not durable contract terms. APIScout’s 2026 guide says its provider checks ran through May 15, 2026. It discusses differences among weather and news products, including development-only access in some cases. Verify every quota and use restriction on the provider’s current documentation or pricing page before launch; do not rely on an old roundup for a production budget.

When an API does not eliminate scraping

An API replaces scraping only for data it actually exposes, in the coverage and format you need, under terms that allow your use. If a provider omits a field, region, historical period, or page content, that remains an unmet requirement. Scraping a website instead may introduce additional reliability and rights questions; it is not a universal fallback that converts unavailable data into licensed, accurate data.

Sometimes the task is not to obtain a dataset at all, but to capture the visual state of a webpage for monitoring, documentation, or an AI workflow. A screenshot API is adjacent to data APIs, not a substitute for a structured weather, filing, or reference-data service. For that narrower job, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it returns screenshots or PDFs from a URL, and reports whether a result was billed.

For visual page capture, one GET request can return an image without you provisioning a browser:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Operational checks before launch

Test the failure path, not just the happy path

Exercise a representative set of requests and record response shape, latency, status codes, and provider-specific quota behavior. Include missing records, malformed input, timeouts, and rate limiting in your client’s handling. Cache only as the provider permits; for NWS, follow the expiration guidance tied to the lifecycle of the information.

Make changes observable

Log request identifiers and outcome categories where available, while avoiding secrets and unnecessary personal data. Track response failures, quota consumption, staleness, and schema changes. Add alerts for sustained failures that affect the application rather than treating one successful manual request as a reliability check.

Keep a migration path

Isolate provider-specific response parsing behind an internal data model, and document the fields your product actually depends on. This reduces the cost of changing providers if terms, coverage, schema, or economics shift. It does not make providers interchangeable: identifiers, history, update timing, and licensing can differ enough to require product changes.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing by headline quota: A large call count is not useful if the endpoint lacks needed coverage or its rights do not match your use. Confirm both before load planning.
  • Using non-commercial access for a commercial product: Open-Meteo’s free weather service is explicitly non-commercial. Move to an appropriate customer subscription and endpoint, or choose a provider whose terms permit the workload.
  • Assuming data access includes redistribution: Fetching, displaying, storing, and reselling can be distinct permissions. Read the license and terms for each operation, including attribution.
  • Mixing public EDGAR reads with filer actions: Use the SEC public-data service for public submissions and extracted company facts; reserve the filing toolkit and its bearer-token operations for filer workflows.
  • Treating an API failure as empty data: A timeout, rate limit, or failed load is not a valid empty result. Preserve the distinction in your application so a transient outage does not silently overwrite useful data.
  • Assuming an API removes all scraping: Compare the API’s actual exposed fields and historical coverage with the requirement. If they do not match, document the gap and assess lawful alternatives instead of treating the API label as a guarantee.

Bottom line

Choose a data API by the dataset, geography, freshness, provenance, rights, and production behavior your application needs. NWS, Open-Meteo, and SEC EDGAR are useful examples for distinct weather and public-record jobs, not a universal top-three list. Verify live documentation and terms before launch, especially for quotas, commercial access, attribution, automated traffic, and redistribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do APIs guarantee that the underlying data is accurate?

No. An API standardizes access and may document provenance or known limitations, but accuracy must be assessed against the source and the needs of the application.

Can I use an API response in a product and redistribute it?

That depends on the applicable data license and provider terms. Check display, retention, attribution, and redistribution rights independently; access permission alone does not settle them.

Is a data API the same thing as a web scraping API?

No. A data API exposes structured records or other documented resources. A screenshot API captures a page’s appearance and does not inherently provide the structured records or rights a data API would.
