If you like NYT Connections but want a different daily puzzle, start with LinkedIn Pinpoint for category guessing, NYT Strands for themed word searching, or NYT Spelling Bee for building words from letters. Each keeps the short, word-focused routine but changes the task. The best choice depends on which part of Connections you enjoy: spotting a shared idea, finding words, or working with letters.

Which daily puzzle is most like Connections?

Connections asks players to “Group words that share a common thread,” according to The New York Times games catalog. Of the alternatives here, LinkedIn Pinpoint is the closest match by mechanic: its official listing says “Guess the category.” The listing does not provide full rules, so check the game itself for how each puzzle works.

For a different kind of themed word challenge, try Strands. If you would rather build words from letters, choose Spelling Bee or Washington Post Keyword. Wordle is a better fit when you want to narrow down one answer instead of finding a group.

Game Publisher Core task in the official listing Best fit if you like Connections because…
Pinpoint LinkedIn “Guess the category.” You enjoy inferring the idea that links clues.
Strands The New York Times “Uncover hidden words and reveal the theme.” You like finding a theme, but want a word-search format.
Spelling Bee The New York Times “How many words can you make with 7 letters?” You want to spot word patterns and test your vocabulary.
Keyword The Washington Post “One word to spell ’em all.” You want a spelling-focused target-word puzzle.
Wridges The Washington Post “A next-level word search.” You want a word search rather than category grouping.
Daily Word Search The Washington Post Listed in the publisher’s daily-game catalog. You prefer a straightforward daily word hunt.
Wordle The New York Times “Guess the 5-letter word with 6 chances.” You like deduction, but would rather solve for one word.
Patches LinkedIn “Piece it together.” You want another word game; the official listing does not explain its mechanics further.

Choose by the kind of puzzle you want

For category inference: LinkedIn Pinpoint

Pinpoint is the most direct alternative for players who enjoy connecting clues to a shared category. LinkedIn’s game page labels it “Guess the category,” but does not explain the full rules; use the live page to see the current puzzle and its instructions.

For themed word finding: NYT Strands

Strands keeps a theme at the center of the challenge, but asks you to uncover hidden words rather than group a set of visible words. The Times describes it as “Uncover hidden words and reveal the theme.” Choose it if theme discovery is the part of Connections you want to keep, with a word-search task instead.

For making words: NYT Spelling Bee and Washington Post Keyword

Spelling Bee asks how many words you can make with seven letters, according to the Times’ listing. Keyword is described by The Washington Post as “One word to spell ’em all.” Both shift the focus from finding a category to working with letters, though their official catalog descriptions do not provide full rules.

For a word-search format: Wridges or Daily Word Search

The Washington Post calls Wridges “A next-level word search” and also lists Daily Word Search in its games catalog. The descriptions identify the format but do not establish more detailed rules. Pick one if locating words is more appealing than connecting them by meaning.
