Start with Standard controls if you want familiar, direct steering: push the left stick left or right to turn. Choose Expert if you want to roll with the left stick and then pitch to turn. For difficulty, Bandai Namco recommends Pilot as a balanced starting point; Rookie adds help with collision damage. The available official guidance does not establish numeric sensitivity or deadzone values, or confirm support and mappings for particular HOTAS devices.
Which flight-control mode should you use?
The right starting mode depends on how you want to steer, not on a proven performance advantage. Bandai Namco describes two control schemes:

These descriptions come from Bandai Namco Europe’s difficulty guide. Its description of Expert explains what the mode offers; it does not establish that Expert is objectively better for every player. Begin with Standard if its direct steering feels more intuitive, or try Expert if you prefer controlling turns through roll and pitch.

Bandai Namco lists Rookie, Pilot, Veteran, and Elite. Its guide recommends Pilot for new or returning flyers and describes it as the default balanced challenge. The publisher says difficulty can be changed at any time.

- Veteran and Elite: These are the other listed difficulty choices; the cited guide does not provide specific numerical adjustments or further descriptions for them.
Does a controller work on PC?
A TechRadar reviewer reports using a standard Xbox Wireless Controller successfully throughout a PC review. That makes a conventional controller a reasonable option to consider, but it is one reviewer’s experience—not a guarantee of compatibility for every controller, setup, or platform. See TechRadar’s review for that report. You do not need to buy a new controller if the one you already use works with your setup.
Does Ace Combat 8 support HOTAS?
The official flight-control guide explains Standard and Expert modes but does not list HOTAS devices, device-specific compatibility, button mappings, or numerical sensitivity settings. A PC Gamer launch-period report describes complaints about a lack of HOTAS support; that is evidence of a reported concern, not a definitive current compatibility list. Before buying or configuring a stick, check current support information for your exact HOTAS model and platform. Do not assume that every axis can be remapped or that a particular device has an ideal mapping. The available sources do not support a universal HOTAS recommendation or a set of numeric settings.

Bandai Namco lists Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The publisher’s product guide says the Standard Edition is digital and may also be sold on disc for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, depending on country and participating retailer.
