There is no single best Google Compute Engine machine type for every 24/7 YouTube stream. If the VM only relays an already encoded feed, a small E2 general-purpose instance is a sensible starting point to test—not a proven minimum. If it continuously encodes or transcodes video, compare C-series performance types with N2D, then choose based on measured CPU needs, memory, network capacity, region, and total cost.
The key question is what “streaming” means in your setup: forwarding an encoded stream uses a different workload profile from processing video on the VM.
Choose by what the VM does to the video
| Workload | Starting comparison | Why it is a reasonable starting point | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relaying or publishing an already encoded feed without video processing | A small E2 general-purpose VM | Google positions E2 for lower-cost, modest workloads; applying that guidance to a relay is an inference, not a YouTube relay benchmark. Google Compute Engine machine families and machine type comparison. | No exact relay benchmark or minimum machine type is established. |
| Continuous software encoding or transcoding | Compare C-series performance types and N2D | Google’s family guidance includes media streaming and transcoding among demanding C-series workloads. Google also identifies N2D as suitable for video streaming. Google Compute Engine machine families and Google Cloud’s N2D overview. | The guidance does not determine a winner for an unspecified resolution, codec, frame rate, bitrate, or number of outputs. |
| You are not yet sure which workload profile applies | Begin with a general-purpose family, then measure | Google’s comparison guidance recommends starting with general-purpose when the right family is unclear. Google Compute Engine machine type comparison. | Resize based on observed utilization and reliability; no exact YouTube setup benchmark is provided. |
These are starting comparisons, not guarantees that a specific VM will sustain your stream. Google’s guidance describes broad workload families; it does not establish performance for your particular YouTube configuration.
How to size and validate the VM
1. Identify the actual processing load
Confirm whether the VM forwards an already encoded feed or runs software that encodes or transcodes video. Write down the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, number of simultaneous outputs, and whether processing is continuous. Without these details, a more precise machine recommendation would be guesswork.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Choose a family to evaluate
For relay-only operation, test a modest E2 general-purpose configuration first. For sustained video processing, evaluate C-series options and N2D rather than assuming a general-purpose VM is sufficient. If the workload remains unclear, Google’s guidance supports starting with general-purpose and revisiting the choice after measurement.
3. Observe real usage under representative conditions
Run the intended stream and inspect CPU and memory utilization, network throughput, and whether the VM maintains the workload without interruptions. Measure during the full range of expected processing and traffic, not just startup. Keep enough CPU headroom for sustained operation instead of sizing to a brief peak or a short idle sample.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. Adjust based on bottlenecks
- If video processing keeps CPU near capacity, compare a larger configuration or a performance-oriented family; check whether the work is actually performed in software on the VM.
- If memory is the constraint, compare configurations with more memory rather than choosing by CPU count alone.
- If throughput is the constraint, check the machine series’ network limits and the expected traffic separately. Bandwidth limits and networking rates vary; no required outbound bitrate is established for this particular stream.
- If usage is comfortably below capacity, test whether a smaller configuration still meets the stream’s operating needs before committing to it.
Collect reliability and utilization data over representative operation and resize when the evidence supports a change. Neither a machine-family description nor an isolated utilization reading proves that a VM will meet an unspecified uptime target.

Disk and network usage are billed separately from machine pricing. Include the disk you need and expected network use—especially outbound traffic—in the cost estimate. A 24/7 operating schedule makes recurring compute charges important, but it does not by itself establish that a particular configuration qualifies for a discount.
