- AWS Elemental MediaLive — best treated as an infrastructure route. AWS documents cloud encoding, scheduled or dynamic input switching, and an example workflow that loops an MP4 file. It offers a configurable path for teams prepared to build and operate the surrounding media workflow.
There is no independent comparative uptime or recovery dataset for these services in the available official material. Do not treat a provider’s continuity statements or YouTube’s encoder directory as proof that a particular channel will never go offline. YouTube itself says products in its verified-encoder list are not made by YouTube and advises creators to evaluate their fit (YouTube encoder guidance).

Castr’s published page describes tier-dependent limits: Starter lists 5 files up to 500 MB and 30 minutes each; Standard lists 10 files up to 1 GB and 60 minutes; Premium lists 30 files up to 2 GB and 60 minutes; Ultra lists 30 files and Events 50 files, with files up to 10 GB and 240 minutes. Castr says Loop mode is available on Premium and higher, loops can be scheduled ahead for plan-dependent periods, and Premium and higher remove its watermark while trial, Starter, and Standard outputs carry one. The same page says Ultra and Events support output up to 1080p at 60 fps (Castr Cloud TV Playout). These are vendor-published, changeable plan details, not independent measurements.

Choose by workflow, not just by the word “cloud”
- Continuous playlist: If the channel mainly repeats a catalog of finished programs, prioritize clear support for uploaded-video looping and a simple YouTube connection.
- Scheduled channel rundown: If programs need fixed times, varied durations, or live inserts, verify the scheduling model and how edits to the rundown take effect.
- Build-your-own media workflow: If the team has cloud-media experience and needs configurable encoding or input switching, examine MediaLive’s architecture and operational requirements before treating it as a turnkey playlist service.
- Operations and recovery: Ask who monitors the output, who changes the schedule, how disconnects are detected, what restart/recovery behavior is included, and what you must do in YouTube Studio. The reviewed sources do not provide a comparable independent recovery test.
- Content and archive needs: Confirm that every program is cleared for streaming, set the correct audience designation, plan moderation where relevant, and decide whether YouTube’s replay archive is sufficient.
Kids’ channel rules still apply to cloud playout
Set the audience accurately
YouTube requires creators to identify whether their content is made for kids. When a video or live stream is designated made for kids, YouTube restricts features; its examples include comments, live chat, personalized ads, cards and end screens, and some channel features. A playout service cannot change YouTube’s policy treatment. Use YouTube’s guidance to make the audience decision based on the actual content: Made-for-kids settings.

Do not confuse audience designation with streams featuring minors
YouTube separately says live streams featuring minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. This restriction concerns streams featuring minors; it is distinct from designating content as made for kids. Review YouTube’s live-stream restrictions if children appear in the broadcast.
Clear the rights to every item in the rotation
Cloud hosting does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, performances, cartoons, or other material. Check that the channel has the necessary rights for the full program and its intended use on YouTube. A continuously running playlist also needs ongoing review when new material is added; a single unlicensed item can create a problem even if the rest of the schedule is cleared.

Plan for archives separately from continuous streaming
A 24/7 broadcast and a complete replay archive are different requirements. YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams under 12 hours, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. Its DVR guidance also warns that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If complete replays matter, design a separate recording and publishing workflow rather than relying on one uninterrupted YouTube archive: Archive live streams and Turn on DVR.
What to confirm before going live
- Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and settings. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is ready to stream and that the intended audience setting is accurate.
- Prepare the playlist and rights records. Organize approved recordings, verify each file meets the provider’s current limits, and decide what happens when the playlist ends or a scheduled item is unavailable.
- Connect the YouTube output securely. Follow the service’s current instructions for adding the channel or stream key. Treat the stream key as a credential; do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Run a controlled test. Check that video and audio play as expected, the correct YouTube destination is selected, and the audience settings and moderation approach are appropriate. For a migration, Castr says parallel testing is an option; confirm its current process with the provider.
- Define incident ownership. Decide who checks YouTube Studio and the playout dashboard, who can restart or replace an output, and how viewers will be informed if the channel needs to stop.
- Make an archive decision. If you need complete program replays, arrange an independent recording and segmentation workflow before treating the 24/7 stream as an archive.
