A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For screenshots without writing raw Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) calls, choose an automation library when your code needs to control a browser, or a screenshot API when you just need an image or PDF back from a request. Playwright and Puppeteer provide browser automation with screenshot capabilities; Selenium with ChromeDriver takes the WebDriver route. Hosted services such as ScreenshotNeo, Browserless REST, ScreenshotOne, and Urlbox offer service-based capture, but they are not interchangeable with automation libraries—and a hosted service may still use CDP internally.
For a direct URL-to-image request, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to consider: it removes supported consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. For interactive browser workflows, use an automation framework instead.
What does “alternative to CDP” mean for screenshots?
CDP is a browser-control protocol, not a screenshot product category. The right alternative depends on what you want to replace:
- Raw protocol calls in your application: use a browser automation framework such as Playwright or Puppeteer, or use Selenium with ChromeDriver if your workflow is built around WebDriver.
- Your locally operated browser: consider a hosted browser service. Browserless BaaS runs supported Puppeteer or Playwright clients against managed browsers over WebSocket; it is not a protocol-free replacement.
- The whole browser-control step for a capture: use an HTTP screenshot API. You send a request and receive image bytes instead of building a browser session yourself.
These layers solve different problems. A library gives your program browser control; WebDriver provides a separate standards-based driver path; an HTTP capture service hides much of the browser operation behind an endpoint. A service can still use CDP or a CDP-based browser internally, so “not calling CDP yourself” does not necessarily mean “no CDP involved.”

Which option fits your screenshot job?
| Option | What it provides | Best fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Hosted website screenshot API and MCP server | One-request URL capture, clean shots, or screenshots initiated by an AI agent | Whether a hosted service meets your data-handling and request requirements |
| Playwright | Browser automation framework with screenshot tooling | Code-driven captures needing viewport, element, or full-page screenshots and browser interaction | Browser engine, capture target, format, scale, and whether you need visual evidence or structured page information |
| Puppeteer | JavaScript browser automation library | JavaScript automation and screenshot work when its supported browser and protocol path fit | Browser and protocol requirements; it is a library, not a screenshot-only HTTP endpoint |
| Selenium with ChromeDriver | WebDriver-based automation bridged to Chrome by ChromeDriver | Existing WebDriver workflows or test setups | Driver/browser compatibility and fit with your current test architecture |
| Browserless REST screenshot API | Hosted HTTP endpoint that returns screenshot bytes | One-off URL or HTML captures without a local browser-control script | Required capture options, authentication, service dependency, and current plan terms |
| Browserless BaaS | Managed remote browser controlled over WebSocket | Running supported Puppeteer or Playwright code against hosted browsers | Protocol compatibility, session model, region and latency; its BaaS v2 documentation says Selenium/WebDriver is unsupported |
| ScreenshotOne | Hosted screenshot API with GET and POST requests | API-based captures when request parameters suit your workflow | Options, access-key handling, request security, and current service terms |
| Urlbox | Hosted URL/HTML capture API | Capture workflows that match its documented output scope | Confirm the exact current features and formats you need |
There is no evidence-based universal winner on speed, reliability, or price among these choices. Decide first whether you need a library or service, direct browser interaction or a single capture request, and which browser, capture target, image format, pixel scale, authentication, and operating model your job requires.

Use Playwright for code-driven screenshots
Playwright is a practical fit when a screenshot is one step in a larger browser workflow. Its screenshot tooling supports viewport, element, and full-scrollable-page captures; PNG, JPEG, and WebP; and CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. A full-page capture cannot be combined with targeting an element. The cited screenshot-tool documentation is not a guarantee that every Playwright package exposes the same interface, so verify the API for the package and version you install.
Install and capture a full page with Node.js
This example uses the Playwright Node package and its Chromium browser. Install the package and browser first:
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Save this as screenshot.mjs, then run node screenshot.mjs:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Change the viewport to control the visible browser dimensions. For a screenshot of the current viewport, omit fullPage. For a particular element, locate it and call its screenshot method instead:

Do not combine an element-targeted capture with full-page capture. Choose the capture boundary that answers the question: the viewport for what a visitor initially sees, the element for a component, or full-page for the entire scrollable document.
Wait for the right page state
A successful navigation does not always mean the page is ready for a useful image. Sites may render content after navigation, load images lazily, or display a transient overlay. Prefer a meaningful readiness condition—such as waiting for a known selector—when the page has a predictable target. A fixed delay can be useful for a known animation but is less robust than waiting for the actual content. If a page keeps network connections open, a network-idle wait can also stall; use a page-specific condition rather than waiting indefinitely.
Other automation routes: Puppeteer and Selenium
Puppeteer for JavaScript and browser automation
Google describes Puppeteer as a high-level JavaScript API for automating Chrome and Firefox over CDP and WebDriver BiDi, and lists screenshots among its use cases. It is a close alternative when you want a JavaScript automation API rather than raw protocol messages. It does not remove the need to operate a browser in your code, and should not be mistaken for a one-request screenshot service. Confirm the browser and protocol path against your project’s requirements.

Selenium with ChromeDriver for WebDriver workflows
ChromeDriver is an open-source standalone server implementing W3C WebDriver and WebDriver BiDi; it bridges WebDriver-based frameworks such as Selenium, WebdriverIO, and Nightwatch to Chrome. This is a different route from issuing CDP calls directly. It is worth comparing when your tests already use WebDriver, but the available evidence does not establish a neutral ranking of Selenium against other frameworks.

Chrome’s modern headless mode is also a useful baseline, not a non-CDP alternative: it uses the same browser implementation as headful Chrome and supports screenshots, PDFs, remote debugging, and virtual screen configuration. Chrome for Testing provides versioned binaries and matching ChromeDriver releases for reproducible test environments. If the actual goal is simply to avoid raw protocol calls, a framework or WebDriver client is the relevant change.
When a screenshot API is simpler than browser code
If the input is a URL and the output is an image, an HTTP API can avoid writing and maintaining a browser-control script. It does not give you the same control as a browser automation framework: interactions, application-specific waits, and session logic may need different handling or may not fit the endpoint. Check the endpoint’s supported inputs and options before moving a workflow.
ScreenshotNeo: clean shots and a one-request workflow
ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API and MCP server. Its distinguishing capture behavior is designed for cleaner page images: before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each of those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status.
It offers PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output and options including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, HTML/CSS input, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicking before capture, hiding selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request/resource blocking, headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent background, resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI spec. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work to ease switching. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request returns the capture bytes. Replace the example URL with the page you need and provide your API key:

Browserless documents two distinct integration styles. Its REST screenshot endpoint accepts a POST with JSON input and returns binary image output; documented controls include URL or raw HTML, full-page mode, clipping, viewport, device scale factor, selectors, waits, and resource rejection. Its BaaS offering instead runs supported browser automation clients over WebSocket. The BaaS v2 documentation says Selenium/WebDriver is not supported because that service version speaks CDP. Do not assume the REST endpoint and BaaS share the same interface or compatibility.
ScreenshotOne documents GET and POST screenshot requests with access-key authentication, recommends HTTPS, and supports a POST JSON body. Its options documentation says its default screenshot algorithm is the same as the one used by CDP, with tuning and some site-specific optimizations. This illustrates why a service API can replace your integration method without replacing CDP-like capture internals.
Urlbox describes an API that converts URLs and HTML into screenshots, PDFs, videos, and extracts text, HTML, and metadata. That is a vendor description, not independent evidence of quality or feature parity. For all hosted options, verify current parameters, limits, security terms, and output requirements in their documentation before depending on them.

How to choose without overengineering
- Write down the output. Specify viewport, element, or whole page; desired format and pixel scale; and whether you need an image, PDF, or structured page data.
- Decide whether the job interacts with the page. If it must click, authenticate, inspect state, or branch on page content, start with an automation framework. If it only needs a capture, evaluate an HTTP API.
- Match the control layer. Choose Playwright or Puppeteer for browser automation APIs, Selenium/ChromeDriver for a WebDriver workflow, or a hosted endpoint when you want request-response capture.
- Check browser and protocol needs. Confirm engine support and whether the service accepts your automation client. Managed hosting does not imply support for every protocol; Browserless BaaS v2, for example, documents no Selenium/WebDriver support.
- Test readiness and edge cases. Try representative pages with lazy images, overlays, long-running network activity, authentication, and responsive layouts. Decide how your code handles timeout, blank output, and failed navigation.
- Compare operations and cost on your workload. Include browser installation and upgrades, service dependency, data handling, cache behavior, request volume, and the current plan terms. The available documentation does not support a neutral price, speed, or reliability ranking across products.
Troubleshooting screenshot failures
The capture is blank or missing content
- Confirm the URL is reachable from the machine or service performing the capture.
- Wait for the actual content selector instead of assuming navigation completion means rendering is done.
- For below-the-fold images, use full-page capture with lazy-image loading where supported, or scroll the page as part of an automation flow.
- Check whether a consent overlay or other modal covers the page; handle it explicitly in browser code or use a service whose documented behavior matches the need.
The script hangs while waiting
- Network-idle waits may not complete on pages with persistent connections. Switch to a selector or other page-specific readiness condition.
- Set a finite timeout and report which stage failed—navigation, selector wait, or capture—so the error is actionable.
- For hosted calls, inspect the service response and its documented verdict or error information rather than treating every response as an image.
The image has the wrong size or crop
- Separate viewport dimensions from full-page behavior: viewport sets the browser’s visible area, while a full-page option extends capture to the scrollable document.
- Use an element-targeted capture when the desired result is a component; do not combine it with full-page capture in Playwright screenshot tooling.
- Check CSS-pixel versus device-pixel output and device scale factor when comparing pixel dimensions across environments.
The browser setup breaks after an update
- Pin and update the automation package and browser together deliberately.
- For ChromeDriver-based reproducible environments, use matching versioned Chrome for Testing binaries and ChromeDriver releases.
- With a hosted browser, check the service’s supported protocol, browser, session behavior, and current limits rather than assuming local compatibility.
The API key or request is rejected
- Send credentials through the documented authentication field and use HTTPS.
- Keep keys out of client-side code and public repositories; call the endpoint from a server you control.
- For GET-based APIs, remember that query parameters can appear in request logs. Use a documented POST method where appropriate and review the service’s security guidance.
Cost, performance, and reliability considerations
There is no substantiated cross-product benchmark here, so do not choose on an assumed speed ranking. For local automation, account for browser installation, startup, version management, and concurrency in your own deployment. For a hosted endpoint, consider network latency, service availability, plan limits, data handling, and the consequences of depending on a provider. Measure your own representative pages if throughput or latency matters.
Likewise, a screenshot that returns successfully is not automatically a useful screenshot. Your reliability criteria should distinguish navigation success, expected page content, correct capture bounds, and whether a result is billable. Use timeouts and explicit checks, and retain enough response information to diagnose failures. Plan prices and feature limits can change; compare current terms directly rather than relying on old figures.
Frequently asked questions
Does using a screenshot API mean the service does not use CDP?
No. An HTTP endpoint changes how your application requests and receives the capture; it does not establish which browser-control mechanism operates behind the service. ScreenshotOne documents that its default screenshot algorithm is the same as CDP’s, with tuning and some site-specific optimizations.
Can I capture a full-page screenshot with an API?
Yes, where the selected endpoint documents that option. Browserless REST documents a fullPage mode, and ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded. Confirm the exact parameter name and behavior in the chosen service’s current documentation.
Is Chrome headless a replacement for CDP?
Not in the sense of choosing a different browser-control layer. Chrome headless is Chrome running without a visible UI; modern headless uses the same browser implementation as headful Chrome. It is useful as a capture baseline, but it is not a non-Chromium alternative.
