Happo is the clearest first alternative to investigate if your project needs a hosted visual-testing service and open-source eligibility matters: its pricing page says free plans are available for open-source projects. Argos is another hosted option to assess, particularly if you use Storybook or Playwright. Neither statement should be taken as proof that every open-source project qualifies or that a tool fits your workflow; check the provider’s current terms and integrations before choosing.

The best fit depends on what you need to test—Storybook components, application pages, or Playwright-driven UI states—and whether you want hosted review and approvals or are prepared to maintain a self-managed workflow. Lost Pixel’s repository currently says the product is being sunset, so it is not a dependable default for a new production dependency.

How to choose a Chromatic alternative

Start with the work your team needs the tool to do, not a brand-level feature list. Visual testing can mean comparing isolated component stories, capturing whole application pages, or taking screenshots within end-to-end tests. Those workflows overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

  • Coverage: Decide whether you need Storybook stories, application pages, or screenshots embedded in Playwright or another test framework.
  • Review: Determine whether pull-request checks and a shared approval interface are important, or whether your team can work with local or self-managed baselines.
  • Capture environment: Find out where screenshots are rendered—your CI browser or vendor-managed infrastructure. Different environments can produce rendering differences that affect reproducibility.
  • Open-source eligibility: Verify whether the provider offers a free plan or special terms for open-source projects, what qualifies, and whether an application or maintainer contact is required. Do not infer eligibility from a general free tier.
  • Browser and volume limits: Compare the actual plan’s included browsers, screenshot or snapshot quota, overages, and any browser or viewport multipliers against your expected usage.
  • Maintenance: For a self-managed tool, account for the setup, infrastructure, and ongoing upkeep your project would own.

Chromatic’s alternatives page presents its service as built around Storybook and lists Applitools, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, LambdaTest SmartUI Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and TestingBot Visual Testing among paid alternatives. Those names can broaden a shortlist, but their open-source eligibility, current prices, and workflow fit should be verified individually.

Hosted alternatives to evaluate

Happo

Happo’s pricing page explicitly says free plans are available for open-source projects. The page describes a free plan with 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome and visual and accessibility testing, plus integrations with Storybook, Playwright, and Cypress. Treat those as details displayed on the pricing page accessed in 2026, not as permanent terms. Check the current quota, browser coverage, eligibility requirements, and activation process before relying on the plan.

Argos

Argos documents integrations with Playwright, Cypress, Storybook, WebdriverIO, and a CLI. Its Playwright quickstart describes installing the SDK, configuring a reporter, taking screenshots, and running tests in CI, so it is a relevant hosted candidate when your tests are already Playwright-based. Argos also publishes comparisons with Chromatic; comparative assessments on those pages are the vendor’s own, not independent evaluations. Confirm current features and plan terms directly with the provider.

Lost Pixel

Lost Pixel’s repository describes an open-source visual-regression tool for Storybook, Ladle, Histoire, and application pages. However, its current README says, “We are sunsetting the product and building what’s next.” That makes it a risky choice for a new production dependency unless you confirm the status of the repository and hosted service directly. The available information does not establish a shutdown date or continuing maintenance commitment.

Happo Pricing page says free plans are available for open-source projects. Storybook, Playwright, and Cypress; pricing page describes visual and accessibility testing. Its described free plan includes 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome; confirm current terms and eligibility.
Argos Not established here; check the provider’s current terms. Playwright, Cypress, Storybook, WebdriverIO, and CLI integrations are described in its product materials. Vendor-authored comparisons should be treated as Argos’s perspective.
Lost Pixel Repository describes an open-source tool. Storybook, Ladle, Histoire, and application pages. Repository README says the product is being sunset; verify maintenance and availability.
Chromatic Check current terms directly; the cited materials do not establish open-source eligibility. Chromatic presents its service as built around Storybook and automatic visual testing of Storybook work. Use it as the baseline only if its Storybook-centered workflow and current terms suit the project.

How hosted and self-managed approaches differ

A hosted review service can reduce the infrastructure and collaboration workflow your team has to operate itself. A self-managed open-source workflow offers more control, but shifts setup and maintenance onto the project. The tradeoff depends on the specific tool: do not assume that every open-source option requires the same infrastructure or level of effort.
