The best Canon zoom camera depends on whether you want a conventional bridge camera, a smaller travel compact, or a pocket device for viewing distant subjects. The PowerShot SX70 HS offers the longest stated optical zoom of the two traditional cameras here; the SX740 HS trades some reach for a compact body; and the PowerShot ZOOM is a monocular-style specialty option, not a standard camera replacement.
Canon zoom cameras at a glance
| Model | Form | Stated zoom | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| PowerShot SX70 HS | Fixed-lens bridge-style camera | 65x optical; 130x digital ZoomPlus | Long-range photography with a conventional camera body |
| PowerShot SX740 HS | Compact digital camera | 40x optical; 24–960mm equivalent focal range | Travel and everyday use when compactness matters |
| PowerShot ZOOM | Pocket telephoto monocular camera | Optical 100mm and 400mm settings; digital extension to 800mm | Viewing distant wildlife, sports or family activities, with casual capture |
These are manufacturer specifications, not results from comparative testing. A higher zoom ratio alone does not establish better image quality, autofocus, low-light performance or handling.
Which Canon zoom camera suits your use?
PowerShot SX70 HS: the long-reach bridge camera
The SX70 HS is the most traditional all-round camera in this shortlist. Canon describes it as a fixed-lens camera intended to offer DSLR-like versatility without interchangeable lenses. Canon lists 65x optical zoom and 130x digital ZoomPlus; treat the latter as digital extension, not additional optical reach. The product page also lists RAW still capture, 4K video up to 60fps, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Canon PowerShot SX70 HS specifications
Choose it if you want a single camera body for distant subjects and close-ups and value its listed still and video features. Canon’s UAE product page reported the model unavailable when checked in 2026; that is a regional, time-sensitive status, not a statement about worldwide stock.

PowerShot SX740 HS: a compact with a broad optical range
The SX740 HS is the compact choice. Canon’s 2018 specification sheet lists 40x optical zoom, a 24–960mm 35mm-equivalent focal range and approximately 20.3 effective megapixels. The equivalent focal range describes the field of view; it is not a zoom ratio to compare directly with the SX70 HS’s 65x figure. Canon PowerShot SX740 HS specification sheet (2018)
The same sheet lists image stabilization and 4K recording up to 29.97/25fps. Its battery estimates are approximately 265 shots per charge, or approximately 370 with Eco Mode, under Canon’s stated test conditions; actual results vary with use. Because the specification sheet dates to 2018, check current product status and stock in your market before choosing it.

PowerShot ZOOM: a pocket viewer that also captures images
The PowerShot ZOOM is designed around looking at distant subjects through a monocular-style device. Canon lists optical 100mm and 400mm settings, plus a digitally extended 800mm setting. The 800mm figure combines optical reach with digital extension, so it should not be treated as an optical setting. Canon names birdwatching, sports viewing, travel and casual family use as intended scenarios. Canon PowerShot ZOOM product page

How to compare zoom figures without mixing them up
- Optical zoom describes the lens’s optical range. Canon specifies 65x for the SX70 HS and 40x for the SX740 HS.
- Digital zoom or extension enlarges or crops the image electronically. Canon lists 130x digital ZoomPlus for the SX70 HS and a digital 800mm setting for the PowerShot ZOOM, distinct from its 100mm and 400mm optical settings.
- 35mm-equivalent focal length expresses field of view in a familiar full-frame format. The SX740 HS sheet lists 24–960mm equivalent; it is not an optical zoom ratio.
For a practical choice, weigh body size and handling, optical reach, video and still features, and the kinds of subjects you photograph. The specifications available here do not support a comparative ranking for image quality, sensor performance, autofocus or low-light output.
Accessories and compatibility for the SX740 HS
Canon’s 2018 SX740 HS sheet lists SD, SDHC and SDXC card support, an NB-13L rechargeable battery, a CB-2LHE charger and the DCC-2400 soft case among supported media or accessories. Confirm exact compatibility and current regional supply before buying; the specification sheet does not establish present availability.

Availability and what the specifications cannot tell you
Product pages and stock status vary by country and can change. The unavailable notices cited above refer only to Canon’s UAE store when checked in 2026. The SX740 HS figures come from a 2018 Canon specification sheet. These sources establish listed features, not current retail stock, current prices or a tested winner across the three devices.
